Oh good, we can look forward to constant "don't forget, away goals don't count double this year" on commentary.

What's the point of playing if you're not allowed to score?

That's the end of Chelsea ever winning it again then.

When they won it this season and in 2012 and also the Europa League in 2013, none of their ties were won via away goals, so they still have as much chance as anyone.

Won't this change just lead to teams shutting up shop in the 1st leg, and then taking their chances at home in the 2nd game, I thought we were trying to encourage attacking play these days, not rewarding parking the bus Jose like tactics.

That was why it was there in the first place. I'd prefer it to stay. Extra time away in Moldova or somewhere isn't a great idea and it's better than a penalty shoot out.
I'd rather they introduced it for the play-offs too after extra time if it can't be settled that way.

That's what it was brought in to do but I don't think it worked.
Too many defensive home teams scared to concede an away goal that counts double.

There was also the criticism that the away goals rule was carried into extra time if everything was level after 90 mins in the second leg. This meant that if the away team scored in extra time the home team needed to score twice to win

Never agreed with away goals counting in extra time as that gives an advantage to the team who plays away in the second leg. But I’ve always enjoyed the away goals rule in the Champions League as it often leaves games on a knife edge where one goal is the difference between either team winning the game.

Oh, and away goals have never counted ‘as double’.

Don't understand that.

They've won it twice without going through on away goals either time at any point in the competition? So why would they never win it again?

The way we've been playing recently we would have benefited from a "home goals count double rule".
There's been no real advantage to home teams playing behind closed doors.

Also unfair if a tie is level after 180 minutes that the team at home in the second leg get an extra 30 minutes in front of their own fans.

I suppose they’ve been looking at all the arguments and decided the best thing would be to scrap it altogether. Apparently these arguments have been going on for years

Yes that's a fair point, and if they really wanted to make it equal then it'd simply be 90 minutes in each tie, no away goals, and if the teams can't be separated then straight to penalties is the fairest method, that gives both sides a fir crack of the whip.

Burnley actually greatly benefitted from the ET in the 2nd leg against both Aberdeen & Istanbul Başakşehir, but we suffered in the Spurs semi-final 2nd leg, so swings and roundabouts I guess.

For some reason I thought they did since they've long been 1-0 specialists. I was wrong.
