Soccer
I've decided to start calling football 'soccer'. I reckon it will annoy people who like getting annoyed.
I can't wait for our first home game. Hopefully we'll all be allowed back on to watch the soccer. Even though I've watched tons of soccer on TV, it's no substitute for actually being there watching the soccer from the stands. Being part of the soccer crowd is what it's all about.

Merely an abbreviation of association, sort of.

Re: Soccer
Football here ( America) is a game played with the hands and not the feet. However I guess that is no different to Rugby Football. When I ask Americans why they call their spirt football they have no idea.

Re: Soccer
With all the subs allowed in this tournament we are getting nearer to American football. Quarter time next?

Re: Soccer
I might be wrong (as usual) but I seem to recall that it was often called 'football' or 'soccer' when I was growing up in the fifties and sixties: TV and journalists also sometimes used 'association football' which is where the word 'soccer' came from. Then the US folks starting calling it 'soccer', presumably to avoid confusion with the name of their other form of football, and we started disliking the word 'soccer'.
When we got together for a game in the 60's playground it was 'footie' (a great word in my opinion).
I don't suppose it matters too much really!

Re: Soccer
Just wait for the day when we have special teams for free kicks and corners.
One set of eleven players to kick off.
Another set of eleven when there is a thrown in and so on.

We called it toga at school - no idea why. You could have a 'rush goalie' if both sides agreed!Im_not_Robbie_Blake wrote: โTue Jun 29, 2021 10:06 amI might be wrong (as usual) but I seem to recall that it was often called 'football' or 'soccer' when I was growing up in the fifties and sixties: TV and journalists also sometimes used 'association football' which is where the word 'soccer' came from.
