Andy Murray doing what he’s done all his career turning a straight sets victory into a marathon. 2sets and 5-0up and loses the set 5-7.
He spends so much more time on court than the other big 3 and when they get to latter stages of a tournament he is cooked. Get off court and onto the massage table FGS.

Murray will probably got though this match, and possibly a couple of others, but he's got absolutely no hope of getting near the latter stages.

His best hope of winning a big event this year will come in The Olympics, where the shorter format should favour him, and some of the bigger stars might not compete.

The OP is spot on is his assessment Andy takes far too long to get these early rounds done and dusted, whereas some like Novak or even Roger usually breezes into the 2nd week, and then ensures they're fresh for the serious action to commence.

The ‘big three’ are considerably better than Murray who of course has had a brilliant career and is doing amazingly well to still be playing after the seriousness of his injury.

Magnificent win by Sir Andrew Murray

Let's get some realism onto the thread.

The opponent was the 24 seed, who gas won 2 tournaments this year and in process of restoring his ranking (was 16 in world).

Andy Murray took him apart.

He has barely played at all this year. Hardly at all in 4 years. Has two metal hips.

It is nothing short of a miracle that he is still able to run.

Will he win? Not a cat in hell's chance. Not 'match fit' for 5 sets and 2 intensive mental weeks. However, he can get better in time, should his body stay healthy.

A great night on Centre Court.

Andy's won the US Open so that bodes well for his hopes.

If Andy was to hang up his racket it would be fitting if he did it at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham next year with the gold medal around his neck and in front of a home crowd.

He's won Wimbledon twice, the Olympics twice, and the US Open, and in any "normal" era without the 3 greats playing he'd have probably won many more Grand Slams.

Also the 1st British man to triumph at Wimbledon in nearly 80 years, so although he's not achieved what the 3 amigos have, he's not exactly had a bad career when you assess it really.

far too many 5 and 6 hour marathons in the slams for his own good

It’s all very well saying finish guys off but the players are all good and Murray is not what he was, clearly given his horrendous injuries…absolute miracle he can still win any games never mind at Wimbledon let alone worrying about not finishing them off quickly enough.

Also, Djokovic who will likely become the best of all time has struggled recently to get games finished with a number of 5 setters and comebacks so it ain’t that easy.

Getting plenty tonight. The body may be failing but the spirit isn't. That said, if he chuntered like this in the street I'd be offering him a brew and asking if he had somewhere dry to sleep for the night.

That was a long one and he will take its toll, maybe. However, on the other hand, these 'matches of 2 halves' could be just the practise and gaining of match fitness ge actually needs!

Better to play a very low ranking player, who misses lots of shots, while you are getting in the playing intensity groove yourself!

Crowd was fantastic for him. That must overawed the lesser players. Bit Davis Cup rather than staid Wimbledon.

Come on Andy....slide through the next one ok!

Not a huge tennis fan but watched a bit last night, he looked old and knackered to me which is perfectly understandable with what his body's been through. Did really well to get through in the end through sheer will power, a nice moment, but can't see him going any further.

I'm pretty sure he's not making a conscious decision to stay on the court longer than he needs to.

I think Andy will struggle to get through his next match, but he's a fighter if nothing else so who knows.

Cameron Norrie set for a potential meeting with Federer in round 3, he's hit red hot form in the past few weeks, so whoever he plays on grass he'll be confident of competing at the very least.

Wow! she won again did she, I have to say she's not a name I'd heard of until this week, but seemingly she's highly regarded in British tennis circles, and as Konta and Murray are now nearing the end of their careers, it's vital that youngsters come through the system to continue their sterling work in finally putting British tennis back on the map again after a long spell in the wilderness.

Just seen that there's no French players remaining in either the men's or women's draws, and the same thing happened at Ronald Garros also, clearly French tennis has major issues ATM, and it's not proving to be a great week for French sport generally after they crashed out of the Euro's as well.

Took 3 match points, but she finally clinched a stunning victory, I think GB has a new star in the making.

Well done to Emma Raducanu, and she may yet go even further.

It's always great too get a story at Wimbledon, and this is certainly a story.

Because tennis fanatics consider things from a GBR perspective- think Davis Cup and the Olympics for example. Murray has had an outstanding career particularly when you consider he's been up against three of the best players of all time. But if you think otherwise fair enough.

I think that just demonstrates the cyclical nature of sport.

You don't have to go back that far to an era when most of the British women were knocked out in the first round.

Which, of course, goes some way to explaining why a rising star in the women's game leads to national hysteria and a media frenzy.

A French player has not won the Men's Singles title since 1983 (Yannick Noah) and prior to him you have to go back as far as 1946.

Raducanu still on Court One tomorrow, I thought they might have moved her match to Centre Court. But there is the small matter of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer to consider.

I totally understand why Murray would be given a peak time audience, now whether he's the greatest ever British player is subjective, and a certain Fred Perry could certainly argue his case to be considered greater then Andy Murray, but as with many sports it's difficult to compare era's, especially ones with such a long time between them.

Well he doesn't represent Scotland in the Davis Cup he represents Great Britain, and if you think 3 GS titles, 2 Olympic gold medals, world number one ranking, and a Davis Cup victory is underrated then you set demanding standards

Those three have won more grand slams than anyone else. If you are judging Murray against those three I don't think that's reasonable.

I think that's entirely fair given the 4 of them played at the same time, he was the 4th best.

Just checked and surprisingly he's fared better against Federer than the other 2 greats.

11-14 against Roger
7-17 Against Rafa
11-25 against Novak

Admittedly not brilliant, but I'll wager that'll compare favourably with most other players on tour, and arguably those 3 are 3 of the all time greats of the game, now nobody is saying Andy Murray is at that level, but it's a bit rich to state he's overrated when he's been playing in an era with this trio of legends, there's been plenty of good male tennis players who because of the dominance of those 3 have struggled to compete for the Grand Slams they might have hoped to amass in an ordinary era of the sport, usually you'll get 2 greats going toe-to-toe in any one era, but to have 3 all competing at the top of their game at the same time is pretty rare, so in that respect I'd say AM has done well to win as much as he has, you are of course free to disagree should you wish.

1st set to Tomljanovic if Raducanu is to make the last 8 she'll have to do it the hard way.

Disappointing end to ER tournament as she was forced to retire injured, she was probably heading for defeat anyway, a set and 3-0 down.

But overall she can be delighted with her debut GS performance, and on this evidence she'll quickly be climbing up the rankings.
