Hackers- how much damage can they do?
I have just received this email. I wouldn't normally pay too much attention to them but it has a Password I use for social media accounts in it (not banking) as well as email. Is it a chancer or full on blackmailer and the police should be involved?
Greetings,
I'm sorry but You're going to have a bad day:
Approximately few months ago I have gained access to your devices, which you use for internet browsing.
After that, I have started tracking your internet activities.
Here is the sequence of events:
Some time ago I have purchased access to email accounts from hackers (nowadays, it is quite simple to purchase such thing online).
Obviously, I have easily managed to log in to your email account ( ******************** and ur password is ********** ).
One week later, I have already installed Trojan virus to Operating Systems of all the devices that you use to access your email.
In fact, it was not really hard at all (since you were following the links from your inbox emails).
This software provides me with access to all the controllers of your devices (e.g., your microphone, video camera and keyboard).
I have downloaded all your information, data, photos, web browsing history to my servers.
I have access to all your messengers, social networks, emails, chat history and contacts list.
My virus continuously refreshes the signatures (it is driver-based), and hence remains invisible for antivirus software.
Likewise, I guess by now you understand why I have stayed undetected until this email...
While gathering information about you, I have discovered that you are a big fan of adult websites.
You really love visiting porn websites and watching exciting videos, while enduring an enormous amount of pleasure.
Well, I have managed to record a number of your dirty scenes and montaged a few videos, which show the way you masturbate and reach orgasms.
If you have doubts, I can make a few clicks of my mouse and all your videos will be shared to your friends, colleagues and relatives.
I have also no issue at all to make them available for public access.
I guess, you really don't want that to happen, considering the specificity of the videos you like to watch, (you perfectly know what I mean) it will cause a true catastrophe for you.
Now the good news!
You transfer $ 2100 USD to me (in bitcoin equivalent according to the exchange rate at the moment of funds transfer), and once the transfer is received, I will delete all this dirty stuff right away.
After that we will forget about each other. I also promise to deactivate and delete all the harmful software from your devices. Trust me, I keep my word.
This is a fair deal and the price is quite low, considering that I have been checking out your profile and traffic for some time by now.
Don't worry in case you don't know how use bitcoin: Google is your friend, not only for adult sites! Quick tip! You can buy bitcoins from Paxful. Use Google to find it.

You have less than 48 hours from the moment you opened this email (precisely 2 days).
Things you need to avoid from doing:
- Do not reply me (I have created this email inside your inbox and generated the return address).
- Do not try to contact police and other security services. In addition, forget about telling this to you friends. If I discover that (as you can see, it is really not so hard, considering that I control all your systems) - your video will be shared to public right away.
- Don't try to find me - it is absolutely pointless. All the cryptocurrency transactions are anonymous.
- Don't try to reinstall the OS on your devices or throw them away. It is pointless as well, since all the videos have already been saved at remote servers.
Things you don't need to worry about:
- That I won't be able to receive your funds transfer.
- Don't worry, I will see it right away, once you complete the transfer, since I continuously track all your activities (my trojan virus has got a remote-control feature, something like TeamViewer).
- That I will share your videos anyway after you complete the funds transfer.
- Trust me, I have no point to continue creating troubles in your life. If I really wanted that, I would do it long time ago!
Everything will be done in a fair manner!
One more thing... Don't get caught in similar kind of situations anymore in future!
My advice - keep changing all your passwords on a frequent basis

What porn you been watching?
Also, once you pay, they'll just keep coming back for more, I just ignore them and bin the emails, if they really had access to everything they'd be able to see what I've got financially.

I can't remember, but it looks like I'm going to be able to watch it all again.
They might even share it on here.

I thought it would be as most of the email reads as such, but having a password I use did put doubts in my mind. I suppose they're very easy to pick up though.tarkys_ears wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 11:50 amGeneric email

I was never going to pay obviously as showing pornos isn't much of a threat. But slightly worried about computer virus etc.

If it's a password you use on a compromised account with the same email address I'd guess they just use bots to try get a hit on the email account to send out emails like this.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 11:56 amI thought it would be as most of the email reads as such, but having a password I use did put doubts in my mind. You could download an Antivirus free trial like nod32 and run a scan
If you're running an up-to-date version of win 10 etc I doubt you'd have anything on therr

Re: Hackers- how much damage can they do?
I got a similar one a few months ago.
The password they quoted was one I used on an old Turkey travel website about 10 years ago and had never logged in to since.
That website may well have been 'hacked' but that doesn't mean the scammers have hacked any of your devices-just delete the e-mail and ignore.

Looking for easy pickings, a percentage will panic and pay which is what they are after. Don't be one of those people and change passwords and you'll be fine. Use multifactor authentication where it's available though - especially email. It's an option for most - just google it.

I've had very similar emails multiple times. I don't even have a webcam.

Did they tell you what tempo you were at during these videos you were watching?Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 11:56 amI thought it would be as most of the email reads as such, but having a password I use did put doubts in my mind. I suppose they're very easy to pick up though.

Set up a dummy email account and forward it to all your mates.

Re: Hackers- how much damage can they do?
I have found that my email address and passwords have been leaked on the dark web through my clear score account, its hard to change them however as it seems some of the sites that leaked them the passwords have been changed already.
Is there any way to 'bulk' edit passwords for certain sites?
Lesson learnt, I now use the iphone generated passwords for things.

Re: Hackers- how much damage can they do?
Ordinarily, these are zero threat, ie they do NOT have compromising footage, and cannot carry out any of the actions they threaten.
However, they are likely to have scraped a password, from a dark web or pastebin compromise list.
First - absolutely do not pay them, there is no need to do this, they are chancers.
Secondly - take the logical step of changing passwords to email accounts - starting with any that match the compromised information they've shared.
I rarely SEE these messages, as I use Gmail for personal/business email, and it spams them at source. However, I can quickly see that I get around one a day.

Re: Hackers- how much damage can they do?
One I have just checked is sent to a specific email address that I used to sign up to LastFM - so I'll guess that was in around 2010!
Shows that they're just harvesting ancient email lists.

Just delete anything that you are not expecting or that is odd. Trust your instincts here.

Thanks for all the help and advice.
Reported it and deleted it. It was only because of the password they had did it cause concern. All changed now.
