Fantastic read, just shows what sort of journey people have that we don't know about.

Re: player of the tournament
Really good read. Although I also read the same article quite a while ago so not sure why it's dated today. It's at least a year old.
Definitely our best player of the tournament.

Re: player of the tournament
Player of the tournament, really? I personally think Phillips has been as good for England as anyone, but the player of the tournament doesn't have to be English.
Re: player of the tournament
I think that’s the issue - there have been so many untruths written about him that people have drawn up a hugely negative and unfair impression of him.
It’s not hard to come to the conclusion that some of the nonsense written was driven by racism.

Re: player of the tournament
Phillips was great in the first game, and in the second half last night. He was dreadful in the other games. He’s bang average.
Sterling has been England’s best and by a distance for me. There hasn’t really been a standout player in the tournament. Schik for Czech Republic did well. Spinnazolla for Italy probably been the standout player though.

Re: player of the tournament
Phillips? Best in the tournament? He’s done far better than I thought he would but I’m still not convinced he should be anywhere near an England team. He certainly wouldn’t get a start in any other top teams based on these performances - so not player of the tournament. Sterling probably would...
Fantastic article by the way.

Re: player of the tournament
I owe Raheem an apology.
We/I took him to pieces with "You let your country down", didn't Klopp sustitute him?
In a different match, I do remeber his speed from the half way line and scoring.
These past couple of years, and in this tournament he is showing what a great player he actually is.

I remember that incident well. One of the more embarrassing moments of being a Burnley fan. Not the most but up there2 Bee Holed wrote: ↑Fri Jul 09, 2021 6:32 amI owe Raheem an apology.

Lots of puzzled looks from those of us who didn't sing it, and we asked the bloke in front why he was singing it and his reply (considering we've sat behind him for years) was a proper eye opener
Re: player of the tournament
Cracking read, and for me the player of the tournament, there's a buzz everytime he gets the ball and you can't say that very often.

My apologies it wasn't for Liverpool, he was playing for Man City.Lancasterclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 09, 2021 7:36 amI remember it

I don't know about anyone else, but I was determined to sing it to any English player who had played in that embarrassing match v Icelend.
I assume those that didn't sing it, thought that performance was acceptable?
I have had to check my dates but the City match was in Nov 2016 about 5 months after the Iceland debacle. Interestingly, only Kane, Sterling and Walker remain from that team that played. Henderson and our own Tom Heaton were unused subs. I remeber Pearce getting similar stick from the Longside decades earlier.

For Italy Bonucci is another who has had a good tournament. Some ignorance shown to both him and Chiellini in the early rounds due to their age but their experience and ability has quietened them down I imagine.
For England Shaw has also done very well with both clean sheets and assists.

Re: player of the tournament
A player for us who has gone relative unnoticed mainly because he's doing everything with such ease is John Stones. Maguire stands out with his physical presence and Walker does too with his pace but Stones reads the game so well and has been the one who has really controlled the games for us.
Reminds me of Ferdinand at his best and from where he was a few years ago his development and maturity has been huge. If he continues on his current path in a few years he'll be seen as one of (if not) the best defender in the world
As for Sterling and the article maybe people should think before they make these big assumptions that all these big name footballs are this or that as in the most part they are great guys who do a lot of good work with communities behind the scenes and just want to get on with their family life like us all.

Another shout for Kyle Walker, he's been outstanding and didn't get the credit for the Muller miss that he deserved.
