Nathan Collins
Was stood with a Stoke fan last night at the game. Got into the subject of ex players between the two.
He has watched Stoke and England for 40+ years and said he is one of the best centre halves he has seen anywhere at that age and he is convinced we have signed a £40m+ centre half. Said he will go to the very top.
Encouraging to hear.
He did also say he would rather play a sofa up front than Sam Vokes who is the worse centre forward he has ever seen. That said I am sure we could say the same for some of the ex Stoke players we ended up with at times. Gifton, Peter Crouch, Wayne Thomas and Jon Walters never hit the heights their Stoke careers promised.

Yeah. One of if not my favourite clarets was vokes. But Dyche knew it was time to move him on.

Looks a promising player, just not sure how he gets into the team if Tarks stays.
Let’s hope we don’t have another Gibson.

I think Collins is a bit more versatile than we think in terms of positions he can play.

Surely in a 442 formation the only position he could play is RB or CB?randomclaret2 wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 6:42 pmI think Collins is a bit more versatile than we think in terms of positions he can play.
I am really excited by the signing but it is now looking likely Tarks is staying and I thought Lowton had a good season.
Difficult to see where he comes in.

I think we need to match up to the opposition on occasions, so 3 at the back, 5 in midfield,
i can see him being useful in these situations.
Whether our manager would do that is, of course, a completely different subject

I’d certainly prefer it over playing 4-4-2 against City!!!

Re: Nathan Collins
This exactly he's been brought as one for the future, and he'll no doubt be aware he may have to bide his time and wait until Tarks moves on next summer before he gets his opportunity, of course if either of our first choice centre back rocks are not available for any reason, then we'll at least have a ready made replacement which we've been sorely lacking this season, hence the downturn in form when either BM or JT has been absent.
And sometimes you can't always choose when you want to sign a particular player, and you have to respond when the guy you're chasing becomes available. if BFC had held off signing Collins in this window, and he'd been snapped up by another club then you can guarantee there would be plenty of unhappy fans posting on this forum.
Totally different scenario to Gibson as far as I can see, Collins is still learning his trade, and is coming from the Championship, whereas Gibson was a PL regular at Boro, and much further advanced in his career.

Playing Collins at either RB or RCB in a 3 would be a great way to blood Collins in to the team as well as getting a bit of rotation!boatshed bill wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 9:04 pmSometimes, depending on the opposition.
Also I think SD needs to consider a bit of squad rotation.

He will be better than both given time and the opportunity to defend in a different system.
For context, Rio and Vidic are inferior to Tarks and Mee in THIS system. We are Burnley and we play in a very limited system it suits the personal we have at the club.

Re: Nathan Collins
Of course it is, and in that case wonderful, but either way Collins is surely a better 3rd choice than Kev Long, no disrespect to Kev, and if he wishes to remain at Burnley as a likely 4th choice centre back, then I'm sure SD will value him as a useful squad member who can be relied upon for the odd cup tie, and in the event of a real emergency even a PL game or two.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Mon Jul 12, 2021 9:17 pmWhat if collins shows to be better than either Tarkowski or Mee? And Collins has shown he can be versatile if required, so that in itself offers SD more options than we currently possess, and as GS has aptly demonstrated at the Euro's you sometimes have to be able to tweak your personnel or system depending on the opposition you're facing on any given day.

'IF' you're honest??
Should be your default position - not optional.

It's only a few words reported secind hand from somebody on an internet board.
But it's nice to hear.
The first time I ever recall reading a recommendation on the internet was back on the old dial up boards when Glentoran fans posted to tell us just what a special talent Glen Little was.

What do people make of what they've seen so far? To me he seems an improvement over Dunne but I'm not really convinced yet he's any better than Long.
Of course he's young and central defenders tend to peak later, I remember thinking similarly about Keane at first but it didn't take many games for him to turn into a quality player.

Collins is in a completely different class to KL.

It’s hard to gauge whether he’s good enough for the Premier League in one game vs Rochdale.
However i thought he looked composed when he had the ball. Good awareness and like mentioned before, a man mountain. I think he’ll turn out to be a fantastic astute signing. No disrespect to Long but he’s a different class- and still only 20.

Looked better as the game went on. Good in the air, good on the ball although a few stray passes happened. Tarky is 29 and supposedly worth 30 million plus and he still misplaces passes. I think he will be a good player for us. Thomas is the one who’s impressed me more out of the two so far though.

I’m only basing my opinion on the one game against Newcastle but I thought he was really strong on the ball, his distribution was really really good. However he did look slightly clumsy at times. I am sure Dyche is working on his positioning and ethos.
Apart from that I can see him being a very good player in the future. However I can understand the comments about long, he’s a solid defender if not spectacular.

My Stoke ST-holding friend reckons that Harry Soutter is even better than Collins so would maybe be good to go back in for him too. Stoke are a bit of a feeder-club for us it seems.

Re: Nathan Collins
Interesting comments by Dyche in the pre-match press conference regarding our new signings & how they are to progress to become Prem players.
Collins obviously was talked about. Have a listen if you're interested, it's as open as I've heard Dyche be when discussing players and their development needs.
Let's just say that Collins has lots of work to do but I guess we kind of knew that anyway. He'll get there though I reckon if he continues to be under Dyche's wing.
