Reading beat us 5-2 on the Turf and Rotherham came and beat us 6-2. We even scored 5 at Grimsby and still lost.Fretters wrote: ↑Tue Jul 13, 2021 7:50 pmI've just remembered another from that season - 5-2 against Reading?
I also remember us winning 3-0 at Sheffield Wednesday and being the first club to win at Leicester's crisp bowl. I think that win actually took us near to the top six. Utterly bizarre season.
Edit - and we made it to the quarter finals of the FA cup!

Re: Burnley 2-7 Sheffield Wednesday
Was it Robbie who scored a hat trick at Grimsby? That would be two players (with Taylor against Watford) who scored hat tricks and finished on the losing side in the same season. Must be a record of some sort!ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jul 13, 2021 7:59 pmReading beat us 5-2 on the Turf and Rotherham came and beat us 6-2. We even scored 5 at Grimsby and still lost.

Was there not a 3-5 defeat to norwich in there too? Darren Huckerby I think?
Re: Burnley 2-7 Sheffield Wednesday
No, think he got two and Taylor got two with Moore scoring the other. I think we also put three or for past Grimsby at the Turf (actually winning the match this time).

That was a cup tie later in the season. We’d drawn at their place and smashed them 4-0 at home.

Ah yes, that’s right. Had to look it up but the home league fixture was 1-1.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 14, 2021 8:24 amThat was a cup tie later in the season. We’d drawn at their place and smashed them 4-0 at home.

Didn't do badly after he left us. Especially if you look at his honors list. A goal every other game in Greece for Panathonikos. Maybe just not suited to English football.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jul 13, 2021 5:56 pmQuick and the ability to go down but otherwise I wasn’t over impressed. I didn't see enough of him but I do remember his last minute equalizer at Ipswich. After that, and as a young lad I was convinced he'd get better. As it turns out, not at Burnley

That about sums him up, he went down that often It was like his boots were 2 sizes too big for him.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Jul 13, 2021 5:56 pmQuick and the ability to go down but otherwise I wasn’t over impressed. Another who got better and better the longer he didn’t play.
Had no idea he played in La Liga & Serie A, but 1 goal in 25 in Spain and 1 goal in 14 in Italy shows he was more suited to the Greek league than anywhere else.

I have the “privilege” of owning the match ball from that game!

That was a weird season in many respects, but just looking up our transfer activity it shouldn't come as a surprise, we brought in only 2 new signings, Beresford & Diallo both on free transfers, and we released 14 due to a combination of cost cutting, and in the case of Mitchell Thomas retirement, including several 1st team regulars, so after all that turnover we were bound to struggle to repeat the success of our previous 2 seasons.

We'd been close to relegation form in the second half of the previous season but it was sort of forgotten because we were top of the league beyond the half way point.tiger76 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 2:39 pmThat was a weird season in many respects, but just looking up our transfer activity it shouldn't come as a surprise, we brought in only 2 new signings, Beresford & Diallo both on free transfers, and we released 14 due to a combination of cost cutting, and in the case of Mitchell Thomas retirement, including several 1st team regulars, so after all that turnover we were bound to struggle to repeat the success of our previous 2 seasons.
As for 2002/03 - somehow we managed to keep clear of the relegation fight but even on the opening day of the season the warnings were there when Brighton beat us on the Turf.

Was that the day where Barry Kilby got pelters from the crowd when he came on to the pitch at HT?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 3:00 pmWe'd been close to relegation form in the second half of the previous season but it was sort of forgotten because we were top of the league beyond the half way point.

That was the day - we'd let both Mitchell Thomas and Kevin Ball go but hadn't signed anyone because of the ITV Digital crash. And so fans, incredibly, booed him.matttheclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 3:02 pmWas that the day where Barry Kilby got pelters from the crowd when he came on to the pitch at HT?

Re: Burnley 2-7 Sheffield Wednesday
I get a mention in that book. I posted on the old site that i would miss the Watford game as i was getting married in Devon that day and then boarding a 747 across the Atlantic, bound for Hawaii. Words to the effect of "how dare you leave your post before we have reached the 50 point mark" was the response received from a poster from the old board who i know is fondly remembered and greatly missed by those who knew the former teacher and ex Lancashire League cricketer and umpire. I am of course referring to eli, who at the time i don't think had been unmasked as DP Evans.Rodleydave wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 2:19 pmpage 224 in It's Burnley Not Barcelona... the book of the daftest season in Burnley history... the book that has so many mistakes and typos..it is in the footie books Hall of Infamy... so many errors it is a collectors item... the book that put a publisher out of business... and I still have some int garage...

NTG once again doesn't cover himself in glory and who was the number 5 for the second who appears to have borrowed Robbie's diving boots?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 3:00 pmWe'd been close to relegation form in the second half of the previous season but it was sort of forgotten because we were top of the league beyond the half way point.

Yes that Brighton debacle should have been a wake up call if we ever needed one, and they were newly promoted to make it even worse, however we had the last laugh as we survived well they returned back to the 3rd tier at the 1st time of asking.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 3:00 pmWe'd been close to relegation form in the second half of the previous season but it was sort of forgotten because we were top of the league beyond the half way point.

In the previous 2 seasons we'd probably over achieved by finishing 7th on both occasions, and as well as losing some of our more experienced heads we were unable to bring in quality replacements due to the financial crash of ITV Digital, in hindsight Stan worked miracles just to keep us in the 2nd tier.

It's the way Davis just throws in the towel that's criminal.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Fri Jul 16, 2021 3:17 pmNTG once again doesn't cover himself in glory and who was the number 5 for the second who appears to have borrowed Robbie's diving boots?

Re: Burnley 2-7 Sheffield Wednesday
nik the greek was an abysmal goalkeeper. im sure he had a glass eye any shot to his left from long range was a goal. against huddesrfield away in his second game he was absolutely unbelievable shame it didnt last
Re: Burnley 2-7 Sheffield Wednesday
What was Davis doing for that second goal? You wouldn't think it was the opening game, talk about lack of effort
