Burnley 2-7 Sheffield Wednesday

Post by jdrobbo » Mon Jul 12, 2021 8:33 pm

A little cheer for your Monday evening…

Four goalkeepers used

A sending off

But at least we had the wonder NTG in goal. Good heavens, we were utterly atrocious!

This Premier League stuff that we’re currently been subjected to, isn’t half bad, is it?

That was a surreal season, and how we managed to stay up while shipping 89 goals is nothing short of remarkable, but somehow we did, and relatively comfortably in the end despite a poor finish to the campaign.

And we also enjoyed a couple of cup runs beating PL Fulham & Spurs in the FA & League cups respectively.

No. He would have been about 13 at the time. There's another Ashley Westwood - who also started his career at Crewe, but was born about 15 years earlier than ours :)

That video sums up the improvements we have made in the goalkeeping department that’s for sure. It’s like watching kids playground stuff.

Sheffield Wednesday had been relegated by then too.

I know there’s been much worse, but it was an awful season

I can't remember if I missed the Watford game or the Wednesday game. I know I deliberately missed one - not because I had anything particular to do - but I could play better football myself by that point.

I can't believe we ever thought NTG was any good. And Luigi Cennamo!

Nick the Greek was a superb keeper, his debut was outstanding. Then someone worked out if you shoot from long range, you’ll always score. Like bug in a cheap computer game.

At least we scored a couple.
My first ever game watching us play against them was at Hillsborough and they stuffed us 7-0!

I remember getting home from work at just after half past 3 that afternoon. I turned on Radio Lancs as soon as I got in and heard the commentator announce that "Gareth Taylor completes his hat-trick for Burnley" which immediately lifted my mood. It was very brief joy as he went onto say "I'll hand you back to the studio with the scoreline now Burnley 3 Watford 4!".

The 4-7 to Watford was my wedding day. The debacle v Wednesday the day after we arrived home from Hawaii. We were very poor back then weren't we...

I was playing cricket, we listened to the final scores during the tea interval:

Burnley 4 - get in
Watford 7 - what the ****

Followed by severe **** taking by the rest of the team, most of whom were Leeds fans.

While we were getting thrashed by Rotherham, I harnessed the negativity and started to trick my brain that we were actually getting beat by Inter Milan instead.

Did Nik come off because he was injured or simply because he was having a shocker? Was he replaced by Beresford?

If you didn't know better, you'd say that game reeks of match fixing. But looking at the season, it's fair to say it was good old incompetence.

At least there was one moment of light relief during the Watford 4-7 defeat though.

I remember the Burnley fans chanting to the meagre away contingent "You've got more goals than fans" :D

Re 4 goalkeepers possibly a game at home to
Leicester in 82/83 season.
Alan Stevenson was sent off and I think an outfield player went in goal for the resultant penalty and then a different player for the rest of the match.
Long time ago so my memory could be playing tricks.

I remember on the previous board that i made reference to these 2 results plus the Watford and Sheff Weds 7 goal debacles and suggested they were the sort of results you only saw from Sunday League teams and not a league side. One of Stan's sons, possibly Dan took real offence and went into one, accusing me of calling his Dad a Sunday League Manager, reeling off Stan's coaching qualifications and experience and that he was reading my post along with his Dad and their solicitor.

He came off through an injury but I don't think it was genuine. Beresford came on and was even worse.

Only three times have we conceded seven goals at home in a league game, once in 1888/89 season and twice in April 2003.

A lot seem to think that but he'd replaced Crichton on the previous Tuesday night for the League Cup game v Palace and this in the days when we didn't field a weakened side in the League Cup.

I think we would have still lost this game if we played both Nik and Marlon in goal at the same time, such was their incompetence that day.

My nephew always used to ask why all the fans got excited about a centre half who couldn’t head a ball.

Was this the same season we lost to Rushden and Diamonds? Somehow Papadopolous went on to have a good career after leaving, pretty sure he was in the Greek euro squad.

He ended his career 112 goals in 409 league games for a weird and wonderful collection of 12 different clubs. Also scored twice in 22 full internationals for Greece.

Yeah he didn't do well when he moved to superior leagues, but should have had the potential to be very good for us at the level.

Quick and the ability to go down but otherwise I wasn’t over impressed. Another who got better and better the longer he didn’t play.

It was in the season before we signed Jensen that was the worst with 89 league goals conceded. In the one season Jensen played for Stan we conceded 77 league goals.

I've just remembered another from that season - 5-2 against Reading?

I also remember us winning 3-0 at Sheffield Wednesday and being the first club to win at Leicester's crisp bowl. I think that win actually took us near to the top six. Utterly bizarre season.

Edit - and we made it to the quarter finals of the FA cup!
