Vaguely remember him from hosting a few quiz shows in the 80's and 90's

Yet another of that era who've now sadly left us.

Not sure if this is meant to be Tom who has passed away, but it isn't
Tom was from Liverpool.
Roy Walker is I think Irish

I think it's tongue in cheek. I think Beamish has form for 'accidentally' posting the wrong picture :)

We sat at dinner with Tom and his wife Pat 3 times on the Baltic Cruise and he had us in stitches each time...

Regaling us with stories of his time as a maths & music teacher before he was famous.

Made his name on the show The Comedians and possibly the only one who would be deemed acceptable for modern TV.

Far from it, but also it should be remembered comedians were playing to their audiences in less enlightened times… there were some top drawer comedians in that group. Roy Walker, Stan Boardman, Frank Carson and who could forget former Doncaster Rovers goalkeeper Charlie Williams… I loved the guy.

I agree , but what I was trying to get across was that based on their acts then, Tom's was one only ones that could possibly translate to modern TV
Agree about Charlie but again his act then would not broadcast now, not that I find anything offensive about their acts then but then I'm an old fogey.😁

I think Charlie Williams would be having a laugh at being called a former Doncaster Rovers goalkeeper. He was a centre half.

There were a great group of comics from that era. George Roper, Joss White, Colin Crompton and who could forget Ken Goodwin. Daft as a brush but extremely funny. Bernard M a favourite too but his style just wouldn't be accepted today.

All the ones you mention were funny men including Bernard Manning who was outstanding live.

I heard him performing a gig once.

I was a youngish lad working in a hotel as a waiter for a business conference and Tom was booked for an after dinner speech. To me, he was that 'old duffer' from daytime TV who was about as funny as table leg. How wrong could I have been. I got to hear most of the speech during and after service and O'Connor was genuinely side-splittingly funny.

A truly great comedian.

I was going to say he was definitely playing at the back when I saw him play, unless he was playing sweeper keeper for the entire game :D
