Re: Olympics thread
Great display by the whole quartet, and a well deserved gold, US 2nd, France 3rd.
I hope that augurs well for the rest of the day.

4x100m mixed medley relay - GB gold and world record. Another brilliant team performance.
Re: Olympics thread
Best medals tally from the pool since 1908! Amazing. I believe the men have another gold chance tomorrow in the 4x100 too?

Best watched with sound turned down this Olympics. The commentating has been lamentable from some. Makes Matterface look good.
Just read about the shenanigans within the fours rowing society. The team that lost - yes their way as well as a medal - got rid of Jurgen Grobler, who was a tough coach. I am far from an expert on this but made we wonder if Snowflakery has infiltrated the minds of some athletes.

Woody out on pens. Get him on the next plane please.
Re: Olympics thread
Just seen her interview on BBC, explaining not qualifying and pulling out of the 200m.
Obviously heartbreaking for her. As sad as it was to see someone so upset, I thought she came across brilliantly and spoke so well under what were obviously very emotional circumstances for her.

Re: Olympics thread
As well as the 2 golds in both mixed medley events, there's also bronzes in the boxing and sailing to add to GB'S medal tally.
GB women's hockey team safely through to the last 8, where they'll face Spain.
Disappointment in the rugby as GB lose their bronze medal match, so just like their male counterparts they take the dreaded 4th place.
Is it my imagination or are GB finishing 4th more than normal, that must be the most frustrating position to come, so close to claiming a medal, and yet you go home potless.
Shame for DAS, but in reality even at her best she may have struggled to live with that Jamaican trio.

The golf also concludes today, Casey & Fleetwood in medal contention, as well as Lowry and McIlroy for Ireland.
GB best chance of gold looks to be in the pool again. And the equestrian team are currently leading, usually another event we're traditionally strong in.

Silver in the pool just missing out to the US in the men’s 4x100.

Re: Olympics thread
8th swimming medal, 4th BMX medal, and more to come in the boxing later.
Casey and McIlroy both lose out in a 7 way play-off for the bronze.
I don't think any BMX competitors will be needing to crowdfund for the next Olympics after that strong showing.

There seems to be something more fragile in these current times about top class sportspeople.
They are built up to be godlike by the media and spend so much time promoting their image. There has been a theme in these Olympics that some would rather withdraw from events than face the fear of losing

Re: Olympics thread
Anyone know the record number of golds we’ve got at a single summer Olympic Games? Post war preferably
Re: Olympics thread
29 in London, 27 in Rio.
Suspect because of big failures in rowing and lack of chances in athletics we'll be down a bit this time.
However, we've done better in swimming and one or two other events.

Re: Olympics thread
Not sure but I think GB gained a huge gold haul during one of the earlier OG, however this was in the days when GB made up a large % of the competitors, so you can't really compare. In the modern era GB'S best gold medal haul was 29 in 2012, followed by 27 in Rio, I can't see us beating those figures, but in the context of these games we're still doing well.

Re: Olympics thread
BMX is a notable success, which I don't think many people predicted.
And the cycling hasn't started yet, and that's an event we normally perform strongly in.
There's also been several high profile gold medallists who've retired, so I'm not surprised that GB is slightly down on golds anyway, but what's pleasing is how many different events we've won medals in, that all round success bodes well for the future, I'd rather that than relying on a couple of core events, which has sometimes been the case in the past.

Re: Olympics thread
More sailing medals already guaranteed.
Great Britain's sailing team have secured two more medals today.
John Gimson, 38, and Anna Burnet, 28, are guaranteed to be on the mixed Nacra 17 podium. They sit second overall after completing the opening 12-race series with three top-five results.
And Giles Scott, 34, leads the Finn class with an insurmountable gap to fourth place. The defending champion claimed his sixth win of the 10-race Finn series before closing it with a seventh place.
Mills and McIntyre move top of women's 470 rankings
Hannah Mills and Eilidh McIntyre moved top of the women's 470 rankings after finishing first and third in their opening series. Mills won gold in 2016 and silver in 2012 with Saskia Clark.
The sailing concludes on Monday & Tuesday, where we should be celebrating further success on the water, and there's a fair chance of another gold or two.

Re: Olympics thread
GB are still pretty strong, but yes you could be correct that we may not dominate as we have in the last few games.
16 Olympic debutants in the 26 strong team. but Jason and Laura Kenny are still on the scene, as is Ed Clancy, who's chasing a 4th consecutive men’s team pursuit title.
The US will provide the main challenge, but there's several others also snapping at GB'S heels, or should that be wheels.

Can't wait for the fallout when the Rowers, most of whom learn the sport at a private school lose their Lottery funding to the BMX kids who learned their craft dodging Police around a council estate
Re: Olympics thread
Unfortunately they'll still get the best funding due to the circles they mix in. Like equestrian, it's who you know in those sports that really counts.

Ben Whittaker and Pat McCormack will both fight for Gold in the Boxing whilst Frazer Clarke guaranteed at least a Bronze after his cheating EU French opponent was disqualified for persistent illegal use of the head .... the Frenchman then protested by sitting cross legged on the canvas just outside the for 25 minutes !!

Bonkers that the Italian sprinter only ran a sub-10 second time for the first time this year and now finds himself the Olympic champion.
I really hope for his sake he’s 100% clean.

Oz riders handlebars snap off and bring him down spectacularly.
They get a re-ride but what state is he in and a teammate looked visibly upset by it all.

Re: Olympics thread
A quiet day for medal action thus far, however GB should almost certainly be claiming something in the eventing, and there's every chance it'll be gold.
Germany smashing the WR in the cycling, but GB still well placed just behind them.
Laura Muir coasting through her heat, she will hopefully be a medal contender.
And GB might be lifting our first medal in women's weightlifting.
Also GB women face Spain in the hockey quarter-finals.
Sailing cancelled due to a lack of wind, so any GB medals there will have to wait, and there will be some. it's just what colour they'll be.
