Olympics thread

Post by tiger76 » Wed Jul 21, 2021 10:53 am

So the delayed games are finally underway.

In the women's football Team GB started with a 2-0 win over Chile, games against Japan and Canada to follow.

A brace for the prolific Ellen White to get GB off to a solid start ahead of the sterner tests upcoming.

A shock could be about to happen in the Sweden-USA match, 2-0 to the Swedes with about half an hour left.

Brazil powering to a 5-0 win over China.

As a reminder New Zealand play South Korea at 9 am tomorrow morning so you'd expect Chris Wood to play.

They probably shouldn't be happening and that is the majority view in Japan - and may yet not finish.

I am somebody who has been passionate about the Olympics since childhood, I don't think I have ever missed a first broadcast of a British Gold medal win since 1980 - (those who remember my Rio Olympics daily threads will testify to my enthusiasm) but this time I am more than a bit meh about it. If all the scandals around British sport were not enough we have the fact that for the last 18 months there has been virtually no testing in many countries and sports - it is a dopers paradise as this article by a very respected journalist shows https://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/sport/sp ... efuls.html.

There is also the fact that different countries have taken different approaches to how their athletes can prepare through lockdown, I have long been an advocate of it is how you perform on the day but this adds to the inequity of the competition

Throw in the ludicrous decision to create a non-official Russian team (not under the flag but wearing the flag on literally all they are wearing in the IOC sanctioned kit and uniforms) and it shows what an awful standard bearer the Olympic movement has become - another domain under and all powerful indisputable and unchallenged leader. The same can be said for many of the individual sports federations, whose leaders are reaffirmed unchallenged for decades. Mix it up with transgender "athletes" and "sports as diverse as baseball/softball, skateboarding, golf, tennis and rock climbing; add in the fact that a lot of professional athletes particularly in tennis are giving it a miss (it has little significance to them) it is a far cry from what it could and should be.

It's not officially started yet, football has started before the opening ceremony.

You shouldn't really question these new sports being added, it's definitely more relevant than bloody tennis in the Olympics, what a sham that was!

I'm really looking forward to seeing genuine athletes at the top of their sport. Always plenty of inspiring stories.

I've always thought that any sport that has more importance elsewhere shouldn't really have an Olympic event. Namely tennis, golf, football etc.

Would Italy regard winning Olympic gold higher than winning the recent Euro's for example?

Such a shame that squash can't get a look in. Obviously they don't have the bribe factor that others have.

Does Climbing / Archery / Fencing have a bribe factor ?

Dunno, but it's obvious the advertising pull of sports such as golf have helped it to get a foot in the door. Why else would golf be a recent entry into the Olympics considering there are already four majors to play for and a host of other big golf tournaments for players to compete in?

Then squash would have a higher profile and brand of sponsor than the 3 sports mentioned.

Bet the Zambian striker isn’t too happy with rest of her teammates though :D

44 to be precise, I did wonder having seen that result whether some of their star names played or not, but they had pretty much a full strength team, however it shouldn't be a complete shock as Sweden knocked the US out of the 2016 Olympics on penalties before going on to claim silver.

The silver lining for USA is they can still qualify by winning their last 2 group games against New Zealand & Australia, which TBH you'd fully expect them to do.

Oliver Dustin is probably an outside medal chance in the 800m - only 20 so one to watch for the future more realistically but he broke Seb Coe's U23 British record recently. He's part fo the extended family so we'll all be screaming at the TV for that one.

Off thread but I wish SSN would use the (W) format when scrolling transfers. Pees me off when you read AN Other has signed for Aston Villa only to discover on googling that it’s a woman.

On thread. I love the Olympics but a bit like CP I can’t get into this years. Might be different when it gets going in full.

Wins in the men's footy for Australia, Brazil, Ivory Coast, Japan, Mexico & Romania as well as NZ, Spain held to a 0-0 draw by Egypt.

Richarlison bagging a 1st half HT for Brazil, they look the side to beat.

Oliver asked for the drugs test to corroborate his record. There wasn't anyone available to facilitate his request and he pushed and pushed for it himself. No way did he knowingly take cocaine and then implicate himself in that manner. It seems like the journalist/paper (who have already called him with a grovelling apology) will be the lucky ones if they get away with printing that story. If there was the miniscule amount of cocaine in his sample as was alleged I'd speculate it came from a bank note or something which is far more plausible than Oliver having sniffed some class A drugs then asked for a test which was only ever gonna deny him his lifelong ambition.

For any fanatics Eurosport have 7 extra dedicated channels on Sky. From 983-989. Whatever your fancy it is on live. I’d imagine BBC are doing similar on the red button?

Going to be a great finish. Looked all over with Carapaz and McNulty almost a minute ahead about 10km ago.

Down to 15 seconds now with Yates in the chasing group

A good win for GB ladies. and they must harbour hopes of at least a medal.

Adam Peaty in imperious form in romping to victory in his heat, you can never be certain of anything in sport, but if he doesn't win a gold or two I'll be surprised he's so far ahead of the field it's like watching Usain Bolt on water.

For anybody who's missed most of the action as I have there's a usual round-up on the BBC here https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/57955443

It's been a relatively low key beginning to these games quite naturally given the bizarre circumstances, but when the high profile track and field events commence it'll probably pick up steam, and once Team GB starts winning some medals the excitement will begin to build once more.

Japan used to be a real force in the women's game, but over the past few years they've declined somewhat, even so it's great for GB that they're through to the KO stages with a game to spare, it'll allow Hege Riise to ring the changes for the 3rd match, and I can see the likes of Ellen White getting a breather, she's too important a player to risk picking up an injury, 3 goals for GB thus far, and she's netted all 3, of course equally GB will want to top the group, and avoid playing either Brazil or Netherlands in the quarters, so it's a fine balance that has to be struck, as we saw with GS at the Euro's, yes you want to win every match, but you also ideally want to peak in the latter rounds when it really matters.

The likely medal contenders in the women's footy are Brazil, GB, Netherlands, Sweden & USA, you'd imagine the 3 medallists will come from that quintet. perhaps Australia and Canada as a couple of dark horses also, but really you'd prefer not to have to meet Brazil/Netherlands so early in the tournament, but if you do you do I suppose.

They had no idea where the race stood without a team car following and an earpiece in. They probably never knew the breakaway had gone out to 10 mins. Far too big a gap in a 3-4 hr race.

Shame Carlton wasn’t on comms, the number of times he’s said, “he/she can do this”. Only for them to get caught. He’d have loved it.

NZ ended up losing 3-2 to honduras (sounds like a couple of goal-keeping howlers but haven't seen the goals). Their 3rd game is on Thursday.

I must admit I suspected that - although I put it down to her being pleased with silver after what happened last time.
Have they confirmed it - hilarious if true.

I think it happened in a misty tour many years ago - the chap who thought he was winning went up and down the peloton shaking hands to say good race and no one let on someone had actually gone up the road in the fog

First British medal, Chelsie Giles claims bronze in the judo.

Bradly Sinden guaranteed a medal of some description as he's competing in the taekwondo final later today.

Adam Peaty safely into the 100m breaststroke final, surely he'll be gaining another gold.

However a shock 1st round loss for Jade Jones in the taekwondo.

Andy Murray pulls out of the singles, and a shock exit for the world number one, and Wimbledon champion Ash Barty.

Silver for Sinden in the Taekwondo, he lost a gripping final to Ulugbek Rashitov.

Still not a bad day for Team GB, a silver, and a bronze to get us on the board.

NZ ended up losing 3-2 to honduras (sounds like a couple of goal-keeping howlers but haven't seen the goals). Their 3rd game is on Thursday.
Actually it's on Wednesday MCM.
