Mens Team GB football team
Having a debate with non- claret friends over who would make it into the squad if the men had a team at this year’s olympics.
For ease you can’t pick any Euros squad members and we picked the fashionable 4-3-3 and picked two for each position. Tried to say only one player from each nation at each position but even though I like to think I have half decent football knowledge I couldn’t think of Scotland or Wales 4th choice let alone Norn Irons first choices (apart from Peacock-Farrell of course ). Also didn’t pick anyone who had surgery or was ruled out of the euros because of injury so no players like Pope or TAA.
Remember only 3 over 24 players allowed, just to make it even tougher. We just chose under 23s though.
Our team was (a few players thrown in just so it wouldn’t be England under 23s!)
GK - Angus Gunn, Bailey Peacock-Farrell
RB - James Justin, Matty Cash
CB - Fikayo Tomori, Ezri Konsa
CB - Ben Godfrey, John Souttar
LB - Rico Henry, Tyrick Mitchell
CM - Ross McCrorie, Harry Winks
CM - Lewis Ferguson, Sean Longstaff
CM - Dele Alli, Hamza Choudhury
RW - Callum Hudson-Odoi, Rabbi Mutondo
ST - Tammy Abraham, Ollie Watkins
LW - Dwight McNeil, Harvey Barnes
Who would you pick?

Re: Mens Team GB football team
...and if my team selection has shown us anything, it is that this is why we don't have a team GB. Awful and literally have to showhorn non-english players into the squad.
I'm glad we aren't there. The only argument for the olympic football is to give those players 3rd/4th/5th in line a chance to play for their country, but also countries not good enough to compete at FIFA tournaments.

I’ve said this before, winning an Olympic medal should be the pinnacle for that competitor.
The only reason football should be included in the games if it was only open to players from clubs below the top 2 divisions of the domestic league

Re: Mens Team GB football team
Football has been an Olympic sport since 1900 ~ 30 years before the first world cup. Great Britain are still the joint most successful team, having won it three times. And of course we should have a team in the tournament. It is ridiculous that we don't. We're the home of the modern game, we should be entering. I'm delighted that at least the women's team are there. For the women's game the Olympics is probably on a par with the world cup.

Re: Mens Team GB football team
They should make it amateur/non league players only. Imagine the experience a non-league all star squad could have?

The only interest I have in the Olympic footie is getting Chris Wood back here as soon as possible.

Re: Mens Team GB football team
Tough ask for these five as they’re the only ones on your list that are under 23 .....
Mitchell
Hudson-Odoi
Matondo
Ferguson
McNeil
If this was a fishing exercise then you got me - if not then you should have suggested this squad for Rio!

Re: Mens Team GB football team
As much as you’ve tried to be negative about my post you’ve let yourself down majorly. All the players I mentioned are eligible for the Olympic team gb team. Because covid delayed the tournament a year, the eligibility to be picked was 24 in 2021. Nice try though.KellyClaret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 1:40 pmThere's at least 5 players in your squad over 23 and that's without going and checking each player's Wiki

Re: Mens Team GB football team
No fishing at all. The rules allowed for players who are 24 in 2021. All those I listed are eligible, and if I wanted to, I could pick 3 players over aged, hence Chris Wood playing for NZ. I don’t though as I made clear in my opSelby Claret wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 2:37 pmUnless of course the rules allow for anyone u23 when the Olympic were supposed to be held....which gives you two or three more
