David Edgar

Post by superdimitri » Mon Jul 26, 2021 7:41 am

An old article now but it went under my radar he had retired last year. The article has some real gems.

He thinks he was good enough to stay at Newcastle and break through the ranks in the premier league :D

He doesn't regret moving to Burnley, but in hindsight would have stayed at Newcastle..I know it's a Newcastle paper..but really?

I knew he had an awful accident but reading the details are even more grim. Falling out of a golf buggy and being hit by an SUV. Ouch.

Nonetheless he's an assistant manager now and seems happy back at home.

He was largely rubbish for us, in part because he just had too many mistakes in him but perhaps that was also down to the way Howe set us up. A happy ending anyway!

He was shite, no two ways about it.

Nothing personal, and he played a small part in our 13/14 promotion (often coming off the bench as a midfielder as I seem to recall) but he simply could not defend whether he was in the middle or at (shudder) right back, where he somehow found himself on occasion. Edgar was, however, a very popular member of the squad from what I heard.

Endemic of the very odd business Owen Coyle did after the Play Off win. Mears and Fletcher were good signings (Nugent on loan too, to a slightly lesser extent), but Edgar, Eckersley and Easton were just not ever going to be of the standard needed. Weird business and despite being a mixture of tribunal fees and low fees, probably cost us a few million in salary over the years.

Edgar, Eckerlsey & Easton

The 1 time dropping 3 E's was a good idea

I thought Edgar had left by the 13/14 season.

Think that was his last season and went to Birmingham summer of 14

He played 21 games, somewhat incredibly! We released him at the end of it.

I don’t think it’s fair to put him alongside Eckersley and Easton who very poor signings. At least we got some value out of Edgar over the space of five years which I assume must have involved a contract renewal at some point.

He made 17 league appearances in the 2013/14 promotion season of which five were starts. We won just one of the games he started (1 win, 3 draws, 1 defeat). HIs final appearance was in the 1-0 win at Blackpool when he came on as a late substitute for Danny Ings.

He never played for Coyle who signed him but it didn't matter whether it was Laws, Howe or Dyche, there were still too many mistakes.

There was a similar decent profile last year in the Athletic, I was surprised by how many games he played for us. Sounded like the most Coyle-esque of signings
"I travelled up to Burnley and spoke to Owen Coyle,” he says. “We played a bit of head tennis and I signed on the same day."

I seem to remember he was quite highly rated when we signed him. My abiding memory of him for some reason is when we appeared to have both him and Fox playing left-back against Fulham just after Laws came in.

Just when I thought I'd wiped that game from my memory. He moved into the middle and was seriously bullied by Zamora.

Inexplicably he was rewarded with a new contract in the 2011/22 season. I never could my head around that.

He was lightweight, prone to error, and quite unconvincing with the ball at his feet. I thought it spoke volumes that Dyche rarely, if ever, played him at centre half.

Ultimately not good enough but as said above we got some value out of him. To rank him alongside Eckersley is unfair. He was far far worse.

He only started 5 Championship games in 2013/14 and he came off at the end of the first half at Huddersfield which we lost. We won 1 and drew 3 of the other games.
He came on as sub in 12 other games playing just 1 minute in four games and 2 minutes in one. He played 82 minutes in one game when he replaced Sam Vokes! In total he played 167 minutes as a sub that season.

Regarding the new contract, you have to remember that Howe often preferred him to Duff.

If he'd been allowed to play as a defensive midfielder he'd have been a legend.

Regarding Eckersley, I seem to remember Fergie being furious at him leaving for such a nominal fee. My United supporting mate said we'd got an absolute bargain.

Clearly a lad who had a lot of promise without delivering on it.

Is this the David Edgar that scored twice at Hull City and helped us grab a win from absolutely nowhere? He was largely rubbish but that was a good afternoon.

Huddersfield away in 2013/14 was one of his worst. As Ashington says above, subbed off at half time and it was amazing he lasted that long. Looked a bit like how I imagine I would if I'd won a prize to play in a professional match.

Did pop up with an equaliser against Cardiff right at the death. Pretty crucial point at the time too
