Is there a reason I (we) are no longer allowed to edit posts?

Post by Chester Perry » Mon Jul 26, 2021 11:40 am

It is really annoying - I have done it a lot previously - mainly spelling, grammar, but also to clarify and add more detail

Agreed. Hopefully it's just a glitch.

It's not a glitch. It's become necessary because of the behaviour of one poster who was using the edit facility to undermine the moderators.

I have therefore taken the decision for now to limit the time that a poster has to edit or delete a post.

Why not just ban the poster concerned rather than limit the functionality for all posters?

Wouldn't it be better to suspend or ban the poster then for the rest of us who don't abuse the system?

There has been lot's of talk about a return to normality recently, the normality I would most like to see us return to is one where these actions are not deemed necessary, just simply respectful behaviour and posts, questioning and challenging without descending into slanging matches, debate and the coming together of diverse and challenging thoughts is good for us all, pithy putdowns, libel and incendiary remarks are not

I'm always editing posts, I don't see the grammatical errors until I've submitted my post.

Grammar & spelling is massively overrated & frequently used as a put down towards certain posters who aren’t the smartest cookies, at the end of the day who gives a monkeys if an apostrophe or comma is in the wrong place or somebody can’t spell institutionalised as long as you can understand the persons post it’s shouldn’t be a problem.

Its not so much the ones who can't spell institutionalised, as the ones who'd make reasonable candidates

Mainly because I'd like it to be right.

Whilst English Language was never my strongest subject, I think spelling and grammar are very important. It demonstrates an attention to detail and a willingness to learn and improve on your construct of language. I really like it when I read or hear a word I've never come across before, and similarly I find foreign languages fascinating.

These days the appropriate ways to spell and construct sentences are only a Google search away, so in theory it should be easier than ever. Obviously some people have dyslexia which can inhibit their ability to interact with written words, but overall, I think it's something we should value highly.
