An Exorcist remake on the way

Post by tiger76 » Tue Jul 27, 2021 3:34 pm

Few details available yet, although Linda Blair won't feature, however Ellen Burstyn will.

Heck of a gamble for Universal to spend $400m just to obtain the rights, but evidently they think it'll be worth it in the long run.

I've yet to watch the first one.

If they're paying so much then they'll make a few films out of it potentially, as that's the current trend in Hollywood

All the ideas have been used up. There's nothing left.

3 films is their plan, but I guess that'll depend how much profit or not the 1st instalment generates.

The original movie in 1973 made a fortune, but the follow-up's all flopped at the box office, so there's no guarantee that this will be a success.

Ditto I've never seen the 1st one either, if it's shown around Halloween time I might try and catch it just to see what all the fuss is about.

But there does appear an ever increasing thirst to reboot these classics, I noticed the other day they've even filmed a new West Side Story with Spielberg directing, much as I love Spielberg it says a lot for the industry that even he is reworking a classic, surely there must be plenty of topics to explore without resorting to simply updating the Hollywood gems.

The 1st movie in the trilogy is due for release in 2023, clearly to tie in with the 50th anniversary of the original, and they'll no doubt hope that this will fuel interest from the viewing public, personally I'm not convinced, many older viewers who saw the original will be in there 60/70's now, and highly unlikely to be still watching horror movies, and the younger demographic I just can't see being attracted to this story, so I'll be interested how they'll try and market this venture.

West Side Story is my favourite version of Romeo and Juliet, I won't be rushing to watch a remake.

Musicals aren't normally my bag, however I finally got round to watching WSS a few days ago, while not perfect it's a pretty good retelling of the tragedy, and all the songs are bang on, particularly "America," which still resonates today due to it's social impact.

As the saying goes "they don't make them like that any more" .

And just like yourself I'd rather watch the originals then any remakes, there's 100's of classic movies which I haven't yet got around to viewing, so I'm certainly not in a rush to watch any remakes when I haven't even seen the originals.

And I definitely won't be paying a subscription service to watch The Exorcist remakes, maybe there will be a market for that product, but I can't see it myself.

Apparently it’s a continuation of the first Exorcist film rather than a remake, but the first one (and the book) is almost perfect and doesn’t really need much more adding to the story.

Seems an awful lot of money to gamble with too

Well they've tried a few sequels down the years, plus a recent TV series, and they all bombed, so unless Universal can come up with a unique spin to attract the masses I can see this also bombing, you'd assume that they've conducted some research before committing this large sum, and they think they'll have an audience prepared to pay on a new streaming platform called Peacock, no I've never heard of it either.

Most sequels to classic movies fail to live up to the perfection of the original, Grease is a prime example, the first outing with Olivia-Newton-John & John Travolta is timeless, and still looks fresh today, however the 2nd one with a young Michelle Pfeiffer badly flopped, fortunately for her it didn't destroy her fledgling career, and she want on to great success.

Peacock is NBC’s streaming platform and isn’t available in the U.K.

Ah! right, you'd assume they'll be selling international rights though, how else are they hoping to recoup that large outlay.

Yeah they must do. HBO Max stuff ends up on Now TV in the U.K. so would expect something similar.

All these streaming services is getting ridiculous, to the point where people will just pirate stuff again

Are you sure that figure's correct? If you add the likely costs of making/distributing the film onto that $400m 'rights' fee, then Universal would probably need the film to become one of the top-ten grossing R-rated films of all time just to break even. :o

No! that' was my initial thoughts also, back in 1973 society was a very different place, as was youth culture, these days people can easily find more shocking clips on YT and other sites, not that I would ever dream of viewing such inopportune content of course. :)

The original is one of my favourite films, but they don’t make them like that any more. It really takes its time to set the scene, and doesn’t really feel like a horror film until 2/3rds of the way through.

I’d highly recommend the book to anyone too, it’s probably better than the film and focuses much more on the scientific reasoning for what’s going on

I hadn't seen it until a couple of years ago. A couple of scenes actually made me laugh out loud, especially the head turning puke thing. It's certainly product of its time.

it's horror-fiction and clearly not meant to be taken seriously.

i like the suspense scenes and the inserted still frames of pazuzu are particularly impressive.

There's millions of good books out there that haven't been made into films.

Yet all we get from Hollywood seemingly is comic book nonsense and remakes.

I'd rather we had a few years of being played european films, antipodean stuff, frankly anything but the back story of some childish superhero who fell into a vat of lard and came out with the ability to farm chickens or something.

I also thought the reference to America further up was the song from team America, world police.......
