Feelings about Jay Rod

Post by Elizabeth » Thu Jul 29, 2021 8:16 pm

We didn’t see the best of him last season due to stop start nature of his injuries .
More than a goal scorer to the team, would an injury free season make a big difference to our season ?

He’s done at this level. He needs to drop a division.

Absolutely it would, and his link-up play with Vydra in the cup tie at Fulham was a joy to watch, he is certainly more than a goal scorer, and his hold up play and intelligence could be invaluable for us next season.

Sorry to say but I agree, if he wasn't 'one of our own' we would of never signed him in the first place.

He's one of 7 or 8 of the squad who will need replacing in the next 12/18 months

Was excellent the season before but struggled the last time out.

I hope we see the Jay Rod of two years ago this season.

I remember when we first tried getting him from WBA and they wanted closer to £20 million but we walked away and went back the next year and got him for £10 million.

We signed a striker who's shown he can score at this level given a decent run in the team for a decent price, it wasn't about signing one of our own

Shocking how soon people who call themselves fans write off Burnley players.
Do you expect SD to settle for the squad as it stands?
AP has already stated he sees SD as head of football and they want him with them long term, so if as we all think SD is asking for more, one thing is for certain they are not done in the transfer market, or they are prepared to let SD walk, no longer willing to work for them?

I fully expect arrivals.

All our strikers are hit and miss in patches.

That's why all 4 get a do at some point in the season.

I'm certainly glad we signed Jay Rod, we would never have the memories of Old Trafford without him.

Thought at times he looked class last season ,but needs an injury free good run in the team . He’s only 31 and if ( and it’s a big IF) he can hit some form and stay fit he could be be absolute gold for us . The stop start in and out nature of his injuries didn’t help last season , but with some quality link
Play behind him he could well shine . Desperately needs some right sided quality this time

The fact that he is, makes him a lot less likely to kick off about being 3rd or even 4th choice. He's a very handy squad player

A lot is made about the benefit of certain players just being part of the squad, and what they bring to the group off the pitch.
I think this is a bit over done in some cases, but I'd give 100% credence to it in JR's case.
Great professional, and "one of our own", though I don't think we'll be seeing too much more of him as first choice TBH.

For me it’s about how jay feels being 3rd or 4th choice striker (which I believe he is) and how happy he will be at getting 10 mins here and 20 mins there…. At the age he’s at now he needs to play and the older a player gets the more time it will take him to get into the game, 10 mins off the bench won’t be enough time to make an impact and force his way into a starting birth.

Don't write him off . He is a very talented footballer (good with both feet and with his head)-who seems to have lost a yard of pace, and sadly I think he was carrying an injury last year. Still has a part to play as long as he gets himself very sharp and fit prior to the season starting. I have greater fears about Barnes being able to be his best this season

Everybody struggled last season.

If you have a smaller squad with older players the injuries occur more frequently. Pretty soon it becomes a downward spiral. You have to send players out who have a niggle, because you have nobody else, and that niggle becomes a knock. Carry on down that road and the knock becomes something serious. On top of that you have players who could benefit from a bit more rest being given no rest at all, which can take the edge of their performances even if they aren't injured.

That is why we practically crawled over the line last season. Even with careful management we were well and truly spent by the final run in. Managing to stay up was a minor miracle and everyone played their part. Jay Rod wasn't as good as his first season back with us, but it was tough for everyone and nobody truly hit their high notes. It was a valiant rear guard action and all the lads did fantastic in the circumstances.

The annoying thing is that we might end up putting the lads through all of that again. It's no wonder that nobody is falling over themselves to come and play for us.

I love the club, I love Dyche and the work he brings.

JRod is and has been a good club servant, but like JBG (scared of his shadow) and Barnes (legs) need to move on to prolong their careers.

His counterparts at other clubs have the abilities to back up their forwards, we rarely dominate in those areas. He would thrive elsewhere , as would the others given that responsibility.
He has bags of talent, a genuine passion for his club. We need a supply line to let him do what he does best.

Maybe threads like this are started to make the point that players like Jay could make a difference next season and shouldn’t be forgotten.
I wouldn’t bother getting all worked up because some have decided to write him off , many still believe Jay has a lot to offer in the PL

thing about Jay, he didn't have a GREAT season but name me a player that did ? He'll know he needs to be a little better but a lot of that is to do with the lack of service. Fix the service and watch us go

When we sold him to Southampton , we sold someone I believe was the complete player for his position.
Like Ings serious injury left him not quite the complete player. I hope there are a least two more premiership seasons left in him.
Our first choice forwards are however Wood and Vydra.

Being 'one of us' is I believe relevant to this discussion:
J Rod was poor to average last season, but not alone in that and/or possibly injured or at least less than 100% fit too? But I believe that he can and will do better this season and beyond it too, either in the starting eleven or as a solid back-up/replacement/squad player.
When it was mooted that we might buy him for £20 million in 2018, I and the powers that be too thankfully thought that was a ridiculous price for him; WBA were trying to lift our leg, hoping we'd fall for the 'he's one of your own' sales-tag - it worked with several on here. But at £10 million a year later I thought he was worth the punt, not 'cheap', but worth it to us. J Rod's not the player he was, nor will he ever be again, but he is talented and a local lad/'one of our own' and that to me suggests that provided he stays fit, he'll remain a solid squad player far beyond the original contract period which that £10 million bought us; he won't be looking to move on, tempted by a slightly better pay-day elsewhere, nor and more especially by the lure of playing for his 'home town club' - JRod's already here and will likely want to stay, so £10 million over 5 or 6 years even fading to become a secondary, bit-part player, is at today's transfer figures blooming cheap!
