Terry Cooper dies

Post by ClaretTony » Sat Jul 31, 2021 10:52 pm

Another former Leeds player from the Revie era has passed away. Terry Cooper has died aged 77. Another top player until he got a bad injury.

All of Norman Hunter, Trevor Cherry, Jack Charlton, Peter Lorimer and now Cooper have passed away in the last 15 months.

Wow, that is just crazy :(
The rest of the Revie team need to be arranging a reunion soon before it's too late.

And Mick Bates who also died recently. He stayed loyal to Leeds even though he was always a back up player

As Quicknick said "Great player in a great team".

One of the first fullbacks that I remember being comfortable going forward and putting in a decent cross.

If I am not mistaken he started off as a winger in the Leeds team then became a very attack minded fullback , and a very good one.

I remember his white boots. Sure I had a pair that looked similar when I was at primary school.

I'm surprised the cricketing folk on here haven't mentioned Mike Hendrick the England and Derbyshire Bowler Who also passed recently....of his Cancer he recently told Mike Atherton.'Im in the departure lounge. But the flight has not quite left yet.' He was 72. RIP.

I missed that - just checked, he passed away five days ago. Excellent player.

From memory a great fast bowler who was constantly questioned about his bowling action, and whether he "threw" the ball rather than bowled it

I never came across any questioning re his action. Saw him play a fair few times and certainly didnt strike me as a problematic action. See him here for England v Pakistan https://www.icc-cricket.com/video/1106867

RIP Mike -Terry Cooper too.

Can’t remember any questioning of Hendrick’s action. The only English bowler I can remember in trouble over his action in the mid to late 70s was Geoff Cope

A winger converted to an attacking full back if I'm not wrong.

Are you thinking of Harold Rhodes also of Derbyshire whose hyper extended elbow joint gave the cricket authorities cause to impose a suspension.

Correct.

I think he was the first of the 'overlapping fullbacks'

England International. Very good at his role.

Some of us recall that his action was still a talking point when he was pro at Burnley in 1970.

Harold Rhodes was at Burnley for two years and he looked to throw every ball when you watched him from a seat in the pavilion but there was nothing he could do about it because of his elbow.

He was indeed. And very successfully.
