iPad advice

Post by ClaretTony » Sun Aug 01, 2021 11:56 am

I've never used one at all so know very little about them but looking to possibly get one for someone who is currently in hospital, just to put on Sky Go, Netflix etc.

I, naively, thought iPads were iPads but there are lots of different ones.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Probably save a fortune by picking up just a tablet that will be able to get sky go/Netflix etc on it than getting an iPad.

iPads are great Tony and so versatile. If you are going to buy one, the standard iPad with 10.2 inch screen and 32Gb will suffice. You could probably get an excellent refurbished model for under £200. Simple to set up and easy to use. I ditched my laptop/notebook years ago for an iPad.

True, a reason could possibly exist why he specifically wants an iPad instead of any tablet, maybe FaceTime or iMessage.

They are great bits of kit, no doubt about that!!

If needed for other functions then a refurbed one will suffice I reckon.

If it’s just for watching stuff on though then probably save £100 and get a v good tablet that would do the same thing.

Yep, face time is excellent too and picture a lot clearer than Skype and Zoom.

I have a Samsung A7 and it’s brilliant, cost about 200 and can also take a SIM card. Use it for Skygo Netflix and FaceTime…amongst other things

My wife recently bought an Apple 8th generation-iPad 3. I’m using her old one- 6th generation - iPad 2. It’s brilliant for messages where you have the names of all your contacts, a bit like email but much quicker. Still have email on it and a stack of apps. No faffing when typing. I don’t really use our lap top anymore. The IPad Is good for maps, google street view etc. Great for doing a quick bit of research on the web. Hard to explain why an IPad is better, it just is. Oh and it’s great to take photos, they then go straight into your albums and to send them on to someone via a message is so quick. They automatically do memories of a batch of photos with accompanying music every few months, out the blue, again hard to explain what I mean but they’re brilliant, there’s no set time when you get them, it’s clever though how it works. It’s good if you’ve an IPhone, take a picture with it and it goes straight to the IPad photo album. I’m still finding different things it does. It doesn’t print much though, but I often type it on the iPad then print it off on the lap. To be honest I think you need both an Ipad and a laptop but the IPad will probably get more use, once you have one you’ll be hooked.

My wife broke my iPad on Thursday, dropped small coffee table on it!
Bought replacement 2nd hand £130, Gosforth, Newcastle including moving all my data across from old one. New ones expensive but at £100+ recommend 2nd hand ones.

What on purpose grounds for divorce I'd say :D

I had an iPad mini ages ago, was brilliant and used it every day. Now I have a normal sized iPad and I never use it, it’s too big to comfortably hold

As to the wife’s accident, iPad and coffee table interaction, I have no effing idea how it happened!

Mines it’s it’s protective cover/case and I find it easy to hold, far better than carrying a lap top around :)
I’m still confident in saying that for anyone who gets one for the first time will wonder why they didn’t get one sooner.

Don’t forget you’ll be able to add it to your MS Office account so all your OneDrive files can be accessed from it

I have an iPad from 2010, (iPad 2 I think) I use it for Netflix in bed, it’s the only app that works on it now. Certainly got my money’s worth from it.

Yes got my girls iPads probably 6-8 years ago just bear in mind the oldest ones won’t update to the latest IOS operating systems and as such a lot of apps will not run on them anymore. Not sure what model the cut off is but worth checking it will run the later operating system if you go down the second hand route.
That said you should still be able to pick up a newer second hand for a good price

Another endorsement for the iPad, had one from nearly new from the Apple shop (they offer some and they are as good as a new one only cheaper) and very very pleased with it.

Not sure if this is permitted on here, so mods please delete if inappropriate.

What are they like for streaming the footy, and what are the best sites to use please ?

Are tablets and ipads as good as each other for this purpose (or as bad as the case may be) ?

Good timing - I received a somewhat discourteous and almost threatening email from Burnley FC last Friday because of the appearance on this message board of a link to last Tuesday's Blackpool game.

I use the iPad mini 5 which does what I need to do, I’d always purchase new due to the warranty but saying that you can buy secondhand 1s in pristine condition well looked after with warranty as well & save a few Bob.
