Gary Cahill

I'm not suggesting we should be signing him but Gary Cahill has just confirmed that he's decided to leave Crystal Palace

We could do worse if we were expecting potential late bids for Tarks.

This would be an excellent signing for us on a one year deal. Would allow us to bed Collins in without throwing him straight in at the deep end of Mee or Tarky were to get injured. Alternatively, it would put us in a better position to sell Tarky this window if a big bid comes in late August.

He'll be a big miss for Palace, he's one of their older heads who knows what the PL involves, and his leadership qualities on and off the pitch are invaluable at this level.

Whether we should sign him I don't know, but as a stopgap we could do a lot worse, yes Collins is promising, but it's asking a lot for a 20 year old to be consistent for a full PL season, and if Tarks did decide to go at the last minute, we run the risk of being exposed in central defence, which we can ill afford.

Sounds like he wanted a higher pay than palace were willing to go to so wouldn’t really make sense if we were able to. Also would rather see Collins given the chance if Tark or Mee are out.

Would be an excellent stop gap if we were looking to cash in on Tarks, but I doubt we can afford such a high wage for a position we’re well stocked up in.

A player who struggled with injuries last season and is now 35. Had he never been on loan with us I’m certain no one would consider signing him.

Too slow for me nowadays, good in his day though.

I must admit my first thought was, it’s a couple of years too late. If I’m thinking that just imagine what the “he’s to old” crowd who write players off at 28 think? If he arrives I think it’s nailed on that Tarks leaves in January.

He’s left palace because he couldn’t agree on terms whether they wasn’t offering him enough to extend or the length wasn’t agreeable, so it’s logical to expect that wherever he next goes what’s on offer will need to supersede the palace offer & at 35 with the injuries it’ll be interesting to see where he goes, as already mentioned north of the border seems to be the favourite.

I wasn't aware he was now 35, in that case and with his wage demands I'll pass then.

Celtic are in dire need of an experienced commanding centre back, so in that sense GC would fit the bill perfectly, however as Shane Duffy discovered it's not as easy north of the border as many think.

Shane Duffy found out that Lewis Dunk was a much better partner to cover his own shortfalls ;)

Maybe but I only hope the Duffy of his Celtic form is the one who turns up at TM in a couple of weeks. ;)

Absolutely brilliant for us back in the day. The first time i'd seen us with a young player with such class. Was evident even then he would go to the very top. Always seemed a good egg too. Wouldnt be averse to having him 'in the group'.

For his age he was outstanding for us. No surprise he went on to have a great career. Suspect he is settled down house wise either in Sheffield or London. If the latter then dont be surprised if he was to go to Brentford or Watford on a two year deal
