Longer Half time breaks

Post by gtclaret » Tue Aug 03, 2021 8:38 pm

Trying to go to the loo and get refreshments at half time is always a challenge within the 15 mins break. In these covid times, the crowds on the concourse could present a risk. Extending the break say to 20 or 25 mins will allow
more time and it would be possible for the stewards to control the numbers. The players would like it, the TV companies would certainly like it, as it allows more advertising time

It would give people time to buy, and fully digest, a burger or hot dog with their Miller beer :D

It would be interesting to see the injury stats with that little extra recovery time.

Christ, let's just do away with the footy part and have 90 minutes of clapping for the dead with regular p1ss and pie breaks.

I remember a time when going to t' footy was escapism.

Chances are that injuries would increase due to the additional time given in which the players cool down. Would require another warm up if it was much/any longer than 15 mins.

Yes it did but TV wanted to show more adverts so it’s two fingers to the paying supporters especially in the cold of winter.

Also that 5 minutes can mean getting a bus or train or not especially for night matches!

If only there was a quicker way of paying for your HT refreshments, say a card system instead of cash, that wouldn't half speed things up wouldn't it. :)

Maybe a lot of people - like me - will avoid / minimise potential risk of covid by staying in our seats in the open air during half-time, so there may well be many fewer people on the concourses.

The 10 to 15 wasn’t a tv thing I don’t think.

Irrelevant what fans or player want, all that matters is the TV companies. If they ever want an extended half time to show more betting adverts then that is what will happen.

They would have to change the laws of the games as currently half time is a maximum of 15 mins

I would think if they tried it then managers would step in. They won’t want extended half time I’m sure.

I don’t think it’s so bad in the premier league. Games seem to restart pretty much bang on 4pm. If you look at football league games it can be after 5pm when Jeffs giving the results

I wonder what the modern thinking from the medical fraternity would be regarding half time.
Would it be detrimental to do away with it and just continue playing.
Many times its obvious teams lose impetus after a good spell of play in the first half, Im sure they would want to play on. Not sure how beneficial it is for managers either, can they really address issues from the first 45 and hope to rectify them in a 15 minute chat?

It was changed and put into Law 7 in 2006. There is no set time just a maximum of 15 mins. Im not sure what the rule was pre 2006 but it may have just not been officially stated

Yup. Let's do away with changing ends too.

It wasn't a tv thing. If I remember correctly it was the clubs themselves who wanted the extra 5 minutes in order to be able to serve fans at food and drink kiosks before the second half kicked off.

It was the days when twix were a lot cheaper!

That wouldn’t create a lot of injuries… make it an hour that way the players can re-warm the muscles ready for the second half, and more importantly you get to eat your Mars bar without getting indigestion. Problem solved.

Not sure about that but when the final scores appear on Saturday afternoons it is always at least one Scottish result that appears first.

I suppose the other side of that argument is of players are sat around for longer, warmed up mussels could become tighter leading to more injuries. Players would have to have warm up sessions again before they came back out, which in a way would make a longer break pointless from their perspective..

Always seems to be a goal or two at the start of the second half before the English games have kicked back off.

When young just wanted to crack on, hated half time because it was boring. When old just wanted to crack on to prevent ceasing up. No chance after 20 minutes sat down.. I suspect a few vintage clarets wouldn’t have enjoyed it. Tin man would definitely needed oiling..
