England vs India - PROPER cricket - 1st Test
Trent bridge is ready...... but the weather looks not to be great for the 4 days after today.
Stokes out and rumours that Pope has failed a fitness test, with Bairstow rumoured to be coming back in...... no doubt to be bowled for 14 by a seamer.
Who do you think will play?

Heard Root & Buttler have been called up by taunton tornados in the big bosh 100 so Atherton & Alec Stewart are filling in for the first 3 days of the test, then the original 2 will be subbed back in.

Doesn't say much for English test cricket at the moment if there are no better alternatives than Bairstow.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 10:05 amTrent bridge is ready...... but the weather looks not to be great for the 4 days after today.

I think Hameed might replace Crawley JDR..... that's my gut feel. Seems to be some thought that Bess might play instead of Leach, because he can bat a bit better. That's not the right way to go. Don't weaken your bowling attack to prop up your batting.
My XI (from those available) - Burns, Sibley, Hameed, Root, Crawley, Buttler, Robinson, Broad, Wood, Leach, Anderson

Let’s hope for a competitive series of REAL cricket between 2 evenly matched sides though I fancy India will shade it. I watch this Hundred lark on and off but can’t really take to it.

Team news.....
Bairstow in, Sam Curran in - no spinner again by the sounds of it.

How England could do with a quality opening partnership like Atherton and Stewart right now!claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 10:07 amHeard Root & Buttler have been called up by taunton tornados in the big bosh 100 so Atherton & Alec Stewart are filling in for the first 3 days of the test, then the original 2 will be subbed back in.

Michael Vaughan summed it up when he said the pendulum had swung so far towards one day cricket that the ECB have neglected the test side of things

Michael Vaughan is muted more on my devices than some posters on here.......
My favourite tweet of the morning was "It's nice to watch 2 hours of cricket without constantly being told how good it is"

Re: England vs India - PROPER cricket - 1st Test
They're way short of the standard required at this level.
10 years ago we played India at home with our top three as Strauss, Cook and Trott. Now Burns, Sibley and Crawley. One hell of a difference there

Obviously, as we only had to pick 1 Englishman...matttheclaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 2:01 pmThey're way short of the standard required at this level.

Very true!
The magician that was KP, he was great when firing, who do we have who can take a game away from the opposition in a session or win a game on their own?
Even with all his faults he was still great to watch.

Re: England vs India - PROPER cricket - 1st Test
Much needed stand between Root/Bairstow, 133-3 now, but one or both of these have to make a ton, having gained 1st use of the track England should looking at 400-450 in our 1st dig.
The top order is a continuing problem, Burns got out in the 1st over, that can happen against good bowlers, and with a new ball, but both Sibley & Crawley both got starts, and then couldn't manage to go on.
Not sure about omitting a spinner, but I suppose Root can always fill in if the seamers need a rest, I'm guessing by the fact that India have only selected one spinner it's a typical English seamers paradise, if so Anderson & Broad will fancy themselves to bowl well, but firstly England need to put a total on the board.

When has 400-450 been the norm in swinging conditions on English wickets?tiger76 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 3:34 pmMuch needed stand between Root/Bairstow, 133-3 now, but one or both of these have to make a ton, having gained 1st use of the track England should looking at 400-450 in our 1st dig.

300-350 is the norm for 1st innings surely?

Bit of a blow losing JB on the stroke of tea, India now with the slight edge, and as usual a lot riding on the captain's shoulders.

Think 280 be good score with conditions assisting swing bowlers.
Plenty of rain forecast from today so may struggle for a result

I've said it before on here, Root apart, this is the worst Test Team batting line up I have ever seen play for England, and I go back to Ken Barrington and Fred Trueman etc.

Imagine test batters not being in great form for test match cricket, when there hasn't been A SINGLE first class game in the country for over 2 months?
The domestic cricketing calendar is a shambles, and the sights should be pointed squarely at the ECB. I'd argue the talent is there, however, the environment to hone skills, build momentum etc is not there.

Other than Root, they all average less than 35. Impossible to be a good side with such an awful batting lineupVino blanco wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 4:09 pmI've said it before on here, Root apart, this is the worst Test Team batting line up I have ever seen play for England, and I go back to Ken Barrington and Fred Trueman etc.

Re: England vs India - PROPER cricket - 1st Test
Just before tea the camera went on Jos Buttler sat watching. They mentioned how long it had been since he’d played any red ball cricket. It was a long time and then he’s straight into a test match. It’s ridiculous.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 4:14 pmImagine test batters not being in great form for test match cricket, when there hasn't been A SINGLE first class game in the country for over 2 months?

Surprise surprise..... man who hasn't played red ball cricket for months and months fails to score.
Lack of talent? Lack of application? Lack of game structure? Lack of opportunity?
I'll let you decide?
PS - anyone fancy some Pom Bears or Wotsits or something?
