An even young Japanese finished above her - it looked a really good event and a shame Sky fell on her first two runs - she was good enough to win it

Hope she avoids any mental issues before shes 16. The way that the young tennis player - who I thought our edia piled pressure on - and other young athletes have had.

Didn't see the event myself. Been a bit hit and miss watching it.
Reading about her past injury list....
A bit daunting.

Is she even British?

Maybe I'm just a miserable sod but there's something about this that I find a bit irritating. Can't quite put my finger on it.

Is skateboarding a sport maybe

It's as much, if not more of a sport than some of the other events. Dressage springs instantly to mind.

To be fair, it’s a reasonable point. But then the idea of nationalism in sport these days is very tenuous. So many athletes, like everyone else, have family spread across the globe.

Born in one country, parents from another, schooled somewhere else. This lass is from Japan, he dad has lived in the US since he was a kid, her mum’s Japanese and I don’t think the girl has ever lived in the U.K.

It doesn’t diminish her achievements at all, she’s amazingly talented, but it’s a bit of a stretch to suggest there’s some sort of reflective glory for ‘Team GB’ other than they basically signed her as a Big 6 football team would.

Agreed, no issue at all for someone born elsewhere who moves here and represents the country. Not really sure someone who is born, raised and educated all her life in 2 countries without this being 1 of them is a massive hard stretch to even be linked to this country.

She's Japanese with a British dad. Too much competition to guarantee a place in the Japanese team so she opted for GB.

Good for skateboarding in this country to have a medal winner so convenient all round.

Don't think its relevant where someone is from, its who they choose to represent. Lots of athletes in these games representing countries they weren't born in. There was an American on this morning representing Costa Rica I think and an Aussie last week won gold in the kayak/canoe event who has parents who represented GB in the Olympics.

100% agree. I don’t even see the need to tie athletes to a country. Just let them compete as you would on the tennis or golf.. or even athletics tour.

Not sure about team sports. The usual line is represent the nation that feels like home but more often that not it’s a business decision around sponsorship, exposure and opportunity. It’s almost as if nationalism is a flawed, bogus concept and we’re all the same really.

There's also facilities and weather to consider. Beth Schriever has an American accent but she's a Londoner. The US will have better facilities and weather than we have for some sports. Lots of athletes train/live abroad because the weather and facilities suit their training program and in some cases are better facilities. You go where the best training facilities are to maximise your potential.
Mo Salah for instance. He spent large parts of the year warm weather training in the US.

To me it's an age thing, i have grown up with carl lewis winning golds, various swimmers and even the great Muhammad ali so anyone trying to compare a 13yr old skateboarder to me are wasting their time, skateboards just remind me of spotty kids with their baseball hats on back to front even when it's sunny.

In the case of Sky Brown even more amazing due to 15 months ago she suffered an injury in training which resulted in several skull fractures, a broken wrist, a broken arm and several lacerations to her heart and lungs.

Not sure what the issue is with her representing Britain when she has a British dad. Would you question why Riyad Mahrez plays for Algeria or Hakim Ziyech for Morocco? It's not like either of them were born or have lived in those countries. I can understand people questioning grandparents but parents? Who cares.
