Surprised Brighton and Southampton (minus Ings?) are not in there.

I think Newcastle will be no way near relegation, agree Southampton will be in the mix.

It's hardly a prediction of Nostradamus type proportions, but one of burnley, brighton, southampton, newcastle and palace will go down this year.

7 teams in the mix for relegation. The three promoted sides, us, Palace, Newcastle and Brighton. I'm staying positive and think we can get 16th or 17th but we have to hope the promoted teams really struggle
Re: The relegation battle is very tight odds wise
We don't need to rely on anyone else as long as we get 36 points. That's all that matters.

But we might not make it to 36 pts

Nah DA you will ... Leeds will get more than 36 points

Southampton have just lost all there goals.
Re: The relegation battle is very tight odds wise
Considering the signing that they've made I don't think Norwich will go straight back down again.

Re: The relegation battle is very tight odds wise
I've been really racking my brains to try and find 3 teams we can realistically finish above this time, and TBH I'm struggling.
Outwith Brentford & Norwich I'm finding it hard to make a case for who we can come above by May.
Watford will surprise a few I sense, so maybe Palace and Southampton represent our best chance of survival. the former has lost an experienced manager, and replaced him with a novice in PL terms, well the latter has just lost their main marksman, and if they continue their form of the 2nd part of last season they'll be lucky to reach 30 points.
However we came 17th last term, and essentially have the same squad, and certainly the same starting XI, so I'd happily settle for anything between 15th-17th, but make no bones about it we' will be immersed in a relegation battle, and the key for us will be improving our results against the bottom 6-8 sides, if we can take a fair haul of points from our fixtures against those teams likely to be around us, we should just be ok.

Usual cluster of teams you can more or less put forward as candidates season after season. I think it will be tighter than last season with the last 1 to go but I can see 2 adrift by some measure towards the end again.

The concern is most of those clubs are making moves to improve themselves, whereas we appear to be going backwards at worst, and standing still at best.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 12:12 pmWatford, Norwich, Brentford, Newcastle, Brighton, Southampton and Palace are all clubs I could realistically see us finishing above.

I think Wolves will be in the mix as well - they’ve an inexperienced management team and have lost a few players too

Re: The relegation battle is very tight odds wise
Are the odds really that tight?
Norwich, Watford, Brentford - Evens
PALACE - 6/4
BURNLEY - 2/1
NEWCASTLE - 9/4
Implied % of the top 3 going down - 50%
Implied % of Burnley going down 33%
Top 3 are 50% more likely to be relegated according to the odds?
So I'd ask the question again, are the odds really that tight?

Re: The relegation battle is very tight odds wise
The one caveat to that is that we have some good players already at this level, whereas others (promoted clubs) may need to improve just to catch up.
Btw, where are we going backwards?
Re: The relegation battle is very tight odds wise
Southampton improving themselves by selling their best player? Newcastle have done less in this window than we have.

Squad a year older, and therefore if injuries strike players are likely to take longer to recover, we still lack a serious lack of pace, and our midfield is also powderpuff, and we're far too reliant on Dwight for our creativity.
We were fortunate last season that the bottom 3 were so poor, indeed Fulham had the record low points tally for a team finishing 18th, I wouldn't be so certain that the bottom 3 this time will fare so poorly.
And if we're solely relying on 3 teams being worse than us, that's an extremely dangerous game to play.
IF we can get our first XI out on a regular basis then we should have enough to keep ourselves above the drop zone, but in reality we will suffer injuries throughout the campaign, and that's where we generally struggle to pick up points.

Burnley's points haul last season would have seen them comfortably stay up in any of the seasons since we first came into the premier league. It wasn't that there were 3 teams worse than us last season with that points haul there would have been 3 teams worse EVERY SINGLE SEASONtiger76 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 1:55 pmSquad a year older, and therefore if injuries strike players are likely to take longer to recover, we still lack a serious lack of pace, and our midfield is also powderpuff, and we're far too reliant on Dwight for our creativity.

It is a weird concept that if you finish 17th you only stayed up because the other 3 teams were really bad. If we finish on 38 points this season but 15th would they say we have improved ?dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 1:57 pmBurnley's points haul last season would have seen them comfortably stay up in any of the seasons since we first came into the premier league. We might well face the same scenario as Southampton soon, a key player coming towards the end of his contract, and a potential offer on the table from Leicester.
You're right about Newcastle, but they're being strongly linked with several players, and I'd say they currently have a better squad than us even as it stands.

Well if we finish 15th then in terms of position we will have improved yes, 38 points looks a long way away with our current threadbare squad though.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 2:00 pmIt is a weird concept that if you finish 17th you only stayed up because the other 3 teams were really bad. Re: The relegation battle is very tight odds wise
Correct! but if folks can't see that we need to improve they're being incredibly naive, we have effectively had the same starting XI for 3/4 seasons now, and we badly need the squad to be freshened up, or it's in danger of becoming stale, if it isn't already.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 05, 2021 1:57 pmBurnley's points haul last season would have seen them comfortably stay up in any of the seasons since we first came into the premier league. We had a dreadful start last season. In the event of us losing any of our key players to injury or sale then I think it will be struggle to stay in the premiership.

I have to say 2/1 is looking a good bet for us, that is if we are 2/1 to get relegated not stay up. But having claret tinted specs I wouldn't bet against us.

I’ll stick my neck out and say that I cannot see Sean Dyche getting another premier league team relegated. With his experience gained over the last few years and providing he stays with us all season, I can see another survival by at least 10 points.

I think we’ll stay up as long as we keep our key personal fit for the vast majority of the season.
However we all know we need a few more bodies.

We have Sean Dyche, which is worth a lot. We haven't lost tarks, Pope or mcneil. I also think Brownhill can grow into a good prem player this year. Vydra should play more of a role too now he's breaking through, and our new cb looks like a good en. That's the positives. We desperately need reinforcements in midfield, particularly wide, and we're a few injuries away from catastrophe. It's all in the balance for me, I still think we're asking a lot if Dyche to defy the odds.

Re: The relegation battle is very tight odds wise
Its true to say we'll be fighting for survival this year, but there's a few positives to think about, don't under estimate the return of fans to TM, a proper break for the players as well, most of them running on empty last season and it showed.
I could def see Palace struggling, dont rate PV as a manager and think they'll struggle with a new team, Saints only were safe last year because they had a blinding start to the season, if you look at the last few months of the season they struggled, also now they've lost Ings...Watford don't seem to be doing much in the market.
It wont be pretty, but I think we've got the experience to do just enough of what's required to be safe.
Get a decent right winger in and we'll be sound
