RIP CUBANCLARET

This morning I recieved the terrible news that my great friend of 30yrs plus Matt Evans aka CubanClaret passed away. He was one of the funniest, informed and loyal Burnley fans you could wish to meet....a massive whole will be left in mine and many hundreds of peoples lives up and down the country. Im still trying to process it and words arent enough but it would mean the world at the moment if you would take a minute for him. Ive just been walking around our home town of Clitheroe in a daze tears streaming...give those you love a hug today for Matts memory

I think I met Matt once a few years ago but he always joined the Fantasy football on here.

So sorry to hear this news and my thoughts with yourself & all cuban’s friends and family.

Matt was a former resident of Sheffield, and member of Sheffield Clarets.

Worked in sports media over here for many years. Think he covered Chesterfield games from memory.

Regularly contributed to When The Ball Moves... fanzine with some excellent articles.

He was working at the music venue in Clitheroe, and seemed to be happy and doing an excellent job there.

A very funny fella. Leaves a wife and two kids, but a whole lot more than that. He brother posts on here on and off, and I know he will be devastated as well.

I'm in total shock, and was not something I even vaguely contemplated reading when I popped onto the board this morning. My thoughts are with his family at this incredibly sad and unfair time. I don't always agree that the good ones die young, but in this case it's 100% true.

I woke to a text from my mum regarding this this morning....I was in total shock. I went to school with Matt and attended many home and away games with him over the years. To say I am devastated is a complete understatement....RIP my old friend....

Wow, such awful news, that’s no age at all and this has come completely out of the blue.

I first met him when I lived in Sheffield as a student and he was just a genuinely lovely bloke who was always game for a pre or most match drink. He also bailed me out once during our first Premier League promotion season when, after all other options had been explored, he selflessly offered to give me a lift to Coventry so I could attend the match we ended up winning 3-1. That remains one of my favourite matches that I’ve attended and he’ll always be a part of that memory.

Thoughts with his family and friends.

Am I thinking of the right person - was involved with The Grand at Clitheroe? If so, I had brief dealings with him a few years back when The Fall were playing there and he clearly put his heart and soul into making the events there a success.
RIP cubanclaret.

Devastating to read a text from whentheballmoves this afternoon with this news and my heart goes out to his family and close friends who knew him far better than I.

Those of us from Sheffield knew Matt well, a top bloke who had been through far too much already, didn’t deserve this (though who does?).

My last conversation with him was on the way to the Turf having a gentle argument about Brexit - I wish we were still having them……

On the bright side the Up The Clarets Fantasy League will be much easier to win - Matt and I have had a long Fantasy League rivalry and have had many conversations about it. He would view this paragraph as a major compliment from me - he was a very clever football person and was very hard to outwit on anything to do with football. If I was ahead of him in the table I would know I was doing well.

RIP.

Condolences to his family and friends. I studied at Sheffield Hallam in the mid 90s and I lived not far away from him in the Nether Edge area of the city. Met him a couple of times. At that time he was very knowledgeable and passionate about Burnley FC along with football as a whole. It was my first year at uni, so it was good for me to meet another Claret who lived very close to where I was. I will also raise a glass to him tonight.
