These
I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you
I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you

Now there’s more to do
Than watch my sailboat glide
And every day can be
My magic carpet ride
And I can play hide and seek with my fears
And live my days instead of counting my years.
Dusty Springfield sings a Carole King song about the loss of innocence that comes with adulthood.

John Grant - Where Dreams Go to Die
Could pretty much take my pick from his entire catalogue though. Grants songwriting is incredible.

I’d go for all of Dance Little Liar. Apparently the inspiration was The Jeremy Kyle Show.
“The rain is trying to prove a point outside”. Joining The Dots - Arctic Monkeys.
“What came first the chicken or the dickhead?” Again, Arctic Monkeys.
Humbug was an incredible record for outstanding writing.
All of “Like a Rolling Stone” by Bob Dylan.
“You’re rarer than a can of dandelion and burdock and those other girls are just post mix lemonade”. Arctic Monkeys. There’s a great interview where he explained the meaning to some American journalist. How up north you barely ever used to see it as opposed to other cans of sodas. Most people love it, but only used to get it from the chippy, or that’s only the place you’d see it.

Let's all meet up in the year 2000
Won't it be strange when we're all fully grown?
Be there two o'clock, by the fountain down the road
I never knew that you'd get married
I would be living down here on my own
On that damp and lonely Thursday years ago
Oh, what are you doing Sunday, baby?
Would you like to come and meet me, maybe?
You can even bring your baby
Ooh ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

"She's got cheekbones like geometry and eyes like sin and she's sexually enlightened by Cosmopolitan" Perfect Skin by Lloyd Cole and The Commotions.
Have noted the Springsteen references above. He's written so many brilliantly evocative couplets but nothing for me tops the first two lines of the first song on my favourite album of all time:
"A screen door slams, Mary's dress sways (* or waves if you prefer), like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays." Thunder Road- pure perfection in lyric-writing. .

Your brother was the first-born, got ten fingers and ten toes
And it's a damn good thing cause he needs all twenty to keep the closet door closed

I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
I know you'll be a star
In somebody else's sky
But why
Why
Why can't it be
Oh can't it be mine
Pearl Jam - Black

Too true Steve. Always found that line , and the way it's sung, very, very moving.
There's a line in a Pogues song, "when I got back to my empty room , I suppose I must have cried", that has the same effect.
Soft arse that I am!

Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid July,
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
Sat at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me Sue!!!

She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College
That's where I
Caught her eye
She told me that her Dad was loaded
I said "In that case I'll have a rum and Coca-Cola"
She said "Fine"
And this verse also from that ditty.
I took her to a supermarket
I don't know why
But I had to start it somewhere
So it started there
I said, "Pretend you've got no money"
She just laughed and said
"Oh you're so funny"
I said "Yeah?
This for me is still the defining song of the Britpop era that I grew up with, and even today it still gets regular radio play over 25 years later, that's the mark of a classic song in my book.

Me & my friend were walking
In the cold light of mourning.
Tears may blind the eyes but the soul is not deceived
In this world even winter ain't what it seems.
Here come the blue skies Here comes springtime.
When the rivers run high & the tears run dry.
When everything that dies.
Shall rise.
LoveLoveLove is stronger than death.
LoveLoveLove is stronger than death.
(the whole lyrics are great - but this always bring a tear with smile sadness alongside fond thoughts...)

"Social leeches quoting Chaucer" marilion garden party, just love that line for some reason.
Also, Muse "don't waste your time or time will waste you", I always take that to mean live life to the full.

I wish he had written down his version of Ceremony.
I know they spent a lot of time and effort after his death trying to work out what he was singing, but I don’t think they ever got it right.

Another one
“The distant echo
Of faraway voices boarding faraway trains
To take them home to
The ones that they love and who love them forever
The glazed, dirty steps
Repeat my own and reflect my thoughts
Cold and uninviting, partially naked
Except for toffee wrappers and this morning's papers
Mr. Jones got run down
Headlines of death and sorrow, they tell of tomorrow
Madmen on the rampage
And I'm down in the tube station at midnight, oh”
