Biggest Burnley Flop?
Really hoping that Cornet never appears on a list like this but who in your opinion is the biggest flop we have ever signed
For me has to be Besart Berisha
Just remember massive hype after the U21 game then the injury he got really ruined his time here
So who is your biggest flop?

Probably Tony Hancock but Marco Gentile must get a mention although not entirely his fault I don’t think.

Burnley's first million pound signing. Jesus wept.

Re: Biggest Burnley Flop?
Could be the worst player but not necessarily as it’s due to expectation. For example I don’t think there were too many high expectations of any Div 4 players. There was some expectation of Tony Hancock partly due to the fee and he was a flop but not the biggest.
Drinkwater
Gibson - but not down to ability or hunger

Re: Biggest Burnley Flop?
After seeing Tony Hancock play against us for Stockport I thought he was a terrific purchase until he started playing for us.
Never scored a goal did he? and sustained an arm injury after having an argument with a dressing room door it's said.

Re: Biggest Burnley Flop?
More recently, a controversial one probably
Aaron Lennon - When he signed first time round, I was expecting more impact from him and I wasn't that bothered when his contract wasn't renewed.
Not suggesting he was a bad player, I just expected more

Drinkwater - he had absolutely no excuse for wasting the talent and opportunities he was given. And not just by us.

This could be a long list.
Loan player: Paul Stewart
Permanent deal: Gerry Gow was the first one I thought of.

Brian Laws signed him i think. 3 million down the drain.
But Ben Gibson takes some beating.

Re: Biggest Burnley Flop?
For the amount of money it’s got to be Gibson.
Mark Ford was one from the 90’s that came with all the credentials but was utter gash.

For one reason or another, it surely has to be Ben Gibson.

Dane Richards
Re: Biggest Burnley Flop?
Think we got all our money back for him so even though it didn’t work out with him it didn’t really cost us much other than a few weeks wages.

Berisha and Van der whasit (add Gurerro to that list too) would have cost pennies in comparison to Drinkmoar and Gibson.

Re: Biggest Burnley Flop?
Why Ben Gibson is included is a head shaker, surely you have to play to be classed as a flop.

Not his fault but Brady?
12m, record signing and released as expected, just imagine his career without that injury
And RE Gibson, massive flop but at least we got 9 mil back?

Paul Stewart was who I thought of first, however after seeing him on the abuse documentary a few months ago it’s amazing he ever played at all
Re: Biggest Burnley Flop?
I'm not sure that he was given sufficient opportunity, he's certainly not wasted his place on the pitch at Leeds.LowtonClaret wrote: ↑Mon Sep 13, 2021 6:12 pmA certain Patrick Bamford. Wasted a place on the pitch
It's a long time ago but Tony Philliskirk, John Gayle and most of the ageing recruits signed by John Bond.
Re: Biggest Burnley Flop?
I didn’t see any evidence of it!

Frederick Nimani. Think he was brought in on loan. Made his debut at Bolton and looked like he’d never seen a football before.

Re: Biggest Burnley Flop?
Gibson didn't really cost the club that much, we recouped most of it when we offloaded him to Norwich.
I expected far more from David Nugent, considering our finances at the time and what he was costing, 6 goals in 30 appearances was a very poor return

I think he's carried on looking like he's never seen a football judging by his career

Gerry Gow, a player I had admired with his curly grey locks from his Bristol City days. By the time we got him from City he was well spent. When partnered with Tommy Cassidy… whose legs had also gone, it was like we had accidentally picked ‘the dads’ of footballers in our midfield.

Can remember Mark Ford being a massive disappointment. Was expecting much more from him after playing for Leeds in the Prem at such a young age.

Re: Biggest Burnley Flop?
In recent times it has too be.
Brady- record signing at the time wasn't he, he promised much, but delivered very little for the fee and wages we shelled out.
Gibson- some signings just don't work out, and he was unfortunate to pick up his injury when he did, as he might have got a shot in place of Ben Mee, but his Burnley career seemed jinxed from the outset, even when he was given a go in Athens, he was unlucky to get the red card, and from that moment on it was a downward spiral alas.
A few from the Waddle era bring back nightmares, Mark Ford for one.
