Played or manged your fiercest local rivals.

Post by tiger76 » Fri Sep 17, 2021 10:14 am

I don't know if this topic has already been discussed, but Benitez crossing the Merseyside divide, and the initial hostility of the Everton's fans got me wondering how many guys haver played or indeed managed 2 fierce local rivals.

A few famous examples to start us off.

Coyle naturally (managed us and Rovers)
Mo Johnston (an infamous one in Glasgow circles, signed for Rangers in 1989, after a spell with Celtic).
Kenny Miller (another who crossed the Old Firm divide on a regular basis)
Denis Law (now I knew he'd famously crossed Manchester in the 1970's, before of course scoring the goal which relegated Utd, but what I wasn't aware of was he also enjoyed a brief spell at Maine Road in the early 1960's)
And lastly one which some younger readers might not be aware of.
Matt Busby (played for Man City in the 1920/30's, before going on to lift the EC with Man Utd in 68).

I'm sure there's countless others, but alas I have to get ready for work, so I'll leave it to you guys to fill in the blanks, and maybe throw up some surprises. :)

Sol Campbell, Spurs to Arsenal and the spurs fans are still bitter about that.

Ashley Cole, Arsenal to Chelsea

Luis Figo, Barca to Real caused some spectacular reactions, I think they even threw a pigs head onto the pitch during a Classico game.

Paul Comstive, Kevin Hird, Chris Pearce, Peter Devine.

Joe Gallagher played for Birmingham City and Wolves (among others) before joining Burnley, rumour has it against Bond’s wishes (and sanctioned by Benson).

Can the MODS edit it if possible please. :)

Steve Bruce is the ultimate 'up yours' merchant. He must love causing the fans to become apoplectic.

Good lad!

Good topic, but Denis Law's goal didn't relegate Manchester United that day, results elsewhere did that.

Denis Law did not relegate United they'd have gone down even if they had won that game.

Beat me to it Rochdale

Mark Warburton managed Brentford and QPR. Quite a few Burnley and Rovers players, some above can also think of Alan Mahon, Andy Cole, Gordon Cowans, David May, Steven Reid, Bradley Orr, quite a few others too.

Bryan Robson, Alan foggon, Barry venison in the North East without thinking too hard.
John Gregory, Alan mullery and that old grandad that bought q penalty against us by putting his leg between tarks and diving Murray all Palace / Brighton.
Lots followed clough from Derby to forest.
Chelsea must have bought a whole team of west ham players.
And of course Kevin Rose Sidley to rye United and back again.
