Re: ARTICLE: I just felt it needed that little bit more
Why do the likes of Arteta, Pep, Klopp always throw in the long ball references? I’ve not seen us play that way too many times this season so it’s a lazy comment.

Re: ARTICLE: I just felt it needed that little bit more
I suppose we should take it as a compliment. We’re clearly now relevant enough in the Premier League that they feel the need to smear us at every opportunity!
When listening to the Everton commentary on the way home, Matterface was livid that Richarlison was out injured because of Tarkowski’s tackle which went unpunished. Utterly pathetic.

I heard that and had to laugh. They really don’t like the status quo being ruffled do they (despite that I really can’t stand Matterface either).PremierLeagueClass wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 9:42 pm

Keep putting out starting XI’s like that one today and we’ll continue to get those comments because there’s more than a grain of truth to them. Look what happens to the team when he actually changed it up for something more progressive.
Re: ARTICLE: I just felt it needed that little bit more
We play long ball or hoof ball - call it what you will
Today we even saw Lowton trying to do long throw ins towards the penalty box - he needs to be told he can't do it
We saw Westwood playing blind crosses into the penalty area without even looking if anyone was there
Dyche has played that way for 8 years and he will not change

That 2nd half performance is the standard now, maintain those levels and add a finishing touch then we'll be fine.
But yet again we only showed up for 45 minutes of a game, and in this league you won't win many games playing for only one half.
These 45 minute displays need to become 90 minute displays if we're going to haul ourselves out of trouble.

Course we play it long more than most, we play to our forwards stregths, when Barnes and Wood start, they're not wanting to pop it off and make runs for slide rule passes in and around the box
It was there for sll to see the last dew games, when Barnes and Wood start together we play a lot of launching.
When its Wood and Vydra we play abit more of a mixed style.
We played far better 2nd half as we had our best team out, it's hardly rocket science.
Positive news about Vydra getting more up to speed, means we should start seeing our strongest 11 taking to the field sooner rather than later.
Robert's will also take this team up a notch too IMO when he comes in to the side.

Re: ARTICLE: I just felt it needed that little bit more
So if Chelsea “knock it long” is it direct or long ball? Yes seasons gone by we’ve played constant long balls up front. However, this season that hasn’t been the case.
I’ve been the biggest critic of hoof ball so for me to say we’re not playing it must mean we’ve changed

Re: ARTICLE: I just felt it needed that little bit more
We mix it up a bit more, but we're still very predictable with long balls and deep crosses.

I’ve said this countless times beforebf2k wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 10:57 pmSo if Chelsea “knock it long” is it direct or long ball? Yes seasons gone by we’ve played constant long balls up front. However, this season that hasn’t been the case.

If VVD or Dias play a 60 yard pass it’s “beautiful ball forward for Salah/Sterling to run onto”, whereas if it was Tarky it’s “hoofed aimlessly upfield looking for a teammate”
Re: ARTICLE: I just felt it needed that little bit more
There’s nothing wrong with a quality long ball over the top to a teammate, it’s one of the great parts of the game.
The problem with our long balls is that they are often aimless long hoofs upfield.

Re: ARTICLE: I just felt it needed that little bit more
We can play the clever passing and pressing stuff, but does not happen enough, as we saw last season. Hopefully Cornet and Vydra starting will influence our play, plus takes the pressure off McNeil who is often double marked

Re: ARTICLE: I just felt it needed that little bit more
I think we've mastered the art of long balls now, and instead the opposition is just better now at nullifying our play.
It's too predictable. Time to mix up our play a bit more. Some passes rather than crosses give defenders more to think about and more likely to make a mistake. More low crosses and cut backs and less deep crosses.
We can use them, but we can't if every single time the opposition expects the same thing. It's therefore easy to defend and prepare against.
I'm certain that before teams play us they train defending long balls.

Re: ARTICLE: I just felt it needed that little bit more
Dyche likes Wood and Barnes to rough teams up a bit but perhaps we need to work harder on a Wood- Vydra combination, especially now with Cornet adding some trickery.
Re: ARTICLE: I just felt it needed that little bit more
There’s a vast difference between VVD playing the ball 60 yds for a teammate to run onto (see Mane vs Bayern Munich) vs Tarkowski playing a percentage 60 yd ball for either of our front 2 to win and hopefully a teammate picks up the second ball. So to Dias. I highly doubt he hits it long for Sterling to contest the ball in the air.

We’ve certainly shown we can play and mix it up, but the first half yesterday was proper turgid, hit and hope stuff. It often is when Barnes plays.

Re: ARTICLE: I just felt it needed that little bit more
Sean has worked wonders with the backing he's been given and somehow found a way of keeping us in the Prem. I think he can play a different style, he's just never had the backing to show it..I know one man doesnt make a team but it was encouraging to see some on the deck give and go passing when Maxwell (and Vyds) came on.....hopefully there will be more to come.
We just need a bit of luck and to get that first win...it would breed confidence and I could see us putting a few results together...which we do need to do.
Weve just got to get behind them....with the fans we'll always stand a chance.
