Some of his memorable quotes on Burnley

The Sun only ever shines in Burnley once every 10 years.

The other one

On the way to Burnley, lovely sunny day but as you drop down the hill into the mist/fog of raining Burnley. :D

The greatest goalscorer I ever saw
Same for me CT, even though he played for Spurs who I have hated since the 1962 cup final! Just such a natural.

Like others, I was fortunate enough to see Jimmy at Turf Moor and what a privilege it was (apart from when he scored).
But one goal I'll always remember him for was this against Manchester United back in the day.
That electrifying burst of speed to get past the defence then calmly slot the ball home.
RIP Jimmy, you truly were a legend.

What an icon he was. Growing up in the 1960's I became aware of and saw evidence of this goalscoring genius. As a boy I always got the impression that he was a serious chap but I was wrong and when he developed his second career as a TV pundit he became popular again with another generation of sports fans. Hope he and Ian St John are reunited and hosting a heavenly "Saint & Greavsie" show. RIP Jimmy

Listened to a lot of stuff said about him today

I can recall seeing him on Saints and Greavsie, like many my age I suppose.

People who've seen him play have said he's incomparable to anyone else who's ever played, he'd be worth more than the likes of Kane in today's market.

RIP to a man who provided so many good memories to millions.

Brilliant goal-scorer, great acceleration/balance/ poise & - knew where to be and when.

I first saw him playing for Chelsea in that famous (60/61) 4-4 when we got fined for playing a largely reserve side prior to the midweek European trip. I think he and Tambling got 2 apiece in that (certainly they both scored).

More of a thorn in our side when he came back to England to play with Spurs of course. I saw him once on the after-dinner circuit about 30 years ago, seemed very down-to-earth and very much a people person.

Two great goal-scorers gone in a couple of weeks now- one German, one English.

RIP Jimmy, thanks for the thrills.

I wouldn’t like to put a price on him but you would definitely be looking at a world record.

The brigadoon reference at the end of this clip.

I’ve been dreading this news for a while now. A very sad day.

The greatest ever goalscorer.

Icon of his time.

Every child playing football knew of Jimmy Greaves.

You can't ask for more - except that he was funny too!

Thank you Mr Greaves.

Still holds the record for most top flight goals. Amazing stat, which tells you how many he must have been averaging per season.

The best ever.

Saw him play a few times, including a famous Tues evening when we beat Spurs 7-2. (Yes, 7-2) Jimmy scored that night.

Love him.

RIP - you were and always will be the greatest.

It's his record as a youngster that always caught my eye. Just checked again to be sure and in 1955-56 he scored 51 goals in Chelsea's youth set up, many of those when he was just 15 years old. Having got himself settled at the club the following season he scored 122 goals, again many of them when he was just 16 years old. It's just incredible. He's the only footballer in my 63 years of watching the game that I could describe as my nemesis and later my idol. I feel very sad today even though we know he was very unwell and had been for a long time. Playing football on the street I would choose to be Jimmy Mc or Jimmy Greaves. Another from the memory bank. :(

Talk of Kane being worth £150m, now Kane is a great striker, but Jimmy was in a different league as a finisher.

Besides his club goals for various teams, 44 in 57 games for England is an incredible feat, and this in an era when England generally faced tougher opponents then they play nowadays.

What Greavsie would be worth in the modern game I wouldn't like to speculate, but like you I suspect he would command a world record fee.

Read this great comment from when he was on MOTD.

Still in his kit, he was being interviewed after a West Ham performance where he had once again failed to score. He was asked by the interviewer: "Jimmy, where do you think you played your best football?"

"Well," droned Jimmy, thoughtfully and deadpan. "Ask a Chelsea fan and he'll say my best football was at Chelsea. Ask a Tottenham fan and he'll say it was Spurs. Ask a West Ham fan and he'll say it was either Chelsea or Spurs..."

Great player. Not my favourite when scoring against Burnley though!

Some measure of the man that in this place, which can be particularly hostile to all things ‘not’ Burnley, everything being posted is of respect for his achievements, his humility and his humour.

Great to see and read.

I’m off to YouTube now, to see what I missed.

RIP Jimmy.

Only ever saw him as a tv pundit but what i liked about him was that he never took football too seriously. Wonder what he made of the po-faced coverage and over the top analysis of the Sky TV era?

He did say he was offered a job by Sky but wasn’t sure it was a good idea to be up on roofs installing dishes at his age.

A fact I just heard about Jimmy, he scored on his debut for every club he ever played for, that's a hack of a stat.

Jimmy Greaves, a legend on and off the field. I hope they bury him, because if it’s a cremation there’s going to be a chimney fire that’ll be hard to put out. RIP legend.
