Why do footballers take their shirts off when they score?
Never understood it? Gets a needless booking too. Does anyone on here take their clothes off at work when they do something positive?

If I was a manager this would drive me crazy, and if you pick up a daft yellow for celebrating, then you're only one bad tackle away from an early bath.
Pointless why they insist on doing this if you ask me.

I'd love to know how many players have picked up a yellow card for taking their shirt off, thus picking up a suspension because it was their fifth, tenth booking of the season etc.
If I was a manager, that would make me incandescent.

They take their shirt off so it's all about them and not about the team. I think it should be a straight red as it shows disrespect to the fans and the club

I guess the kind of player who might take his shirt off after scoring probably isn’t one who would accumulate a lot of yellow cards throughout a season.

IDK but either way it could still add to the totting up process, and eventually count against them later in the season.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 12:41 pmI'd love to know how many players have picked up a yellow card for taking their shirt off, thus picking up a suspension because it was their fifth, tenth booking of the season etc.

And yes incandescent is a great word to describe how the managers probably feel about it.
It's the same with dissent towards the officials, I appreciate it's a passionate game, but the refs rarely change their mind no matter how much you berate them, so why bother running the risk of a booking.

It dates back to the 1930's when Charles Foweraker (then Bolton manager) offered to buy his players a new tailored shirt for every goal they scored. Jack Milsom started celebrating his goals by taking off his shirt as he ran back past his manager.

Why should anyone receive a yellow for taking their shirt off is the question.

It's considered unsporting behavior and an excessive celebration.
Also marks them down as a complete pillock

All it takes is for the Manager to say you don’t do it or there will be consequences. Incidentally what would happen if players started taking their shorts off.

The Premier League is a brand that broadcasts all over the world, so there are some cultural sensitivities that they want to respect. Topless men on television aren’t appropriate in some territories. Also, it discourages political messages, unapproved sponsorship deals and provoking statements on t-shirts too. Then there is the time wasting, with players trying to put wet shirts back on as they walk back for the restart.tarkys_ears wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 12:51 pmWhy should anyone receive a yellow for taking their shirt off is the question.

I thought it was because it upset the shirt sponsors.SalisburyClaret wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 12:59 pmIt's considered unsporting behavior and an excessive celebration.

Thats happened a few timesSalisburyClaret wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 1:34 pmNot a rule as such but I can't imagine they'd be right happy.
Can't wait for a player to forget he's been booked - then sent off for taking his shirt off. Or score two...

I think that has happened. Could have been Diego Costa. It'll be on youtube somewhere.SalisburyClaret wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 1:34 pmNot a rule as such but I can't imagine they'd be right happy.

Re: Why do footballers take their shirts off when they score?
Jack Milsom may have done it in the 30s, but I don’t remember ever seeing it before the late 1990s. In my mind it started with Fabrizio Ravenelli pulling his shirt up over his head at Middlesbrough, then other players copying it and taking it a stage further.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 12:49 pmIt dates back to the 1930's when Charles Foweraker (then Bolton manager) offered to buy his players a new tailored shirt for every goal they scored. Either way, it always struck me as a strange thing to do - all the more so when you know you’re going to be booked. Maybe modern footballers just like to show off how ripped they are…

It's actually to do with "excessive celebrating" nothing to do with your diatribe... lol what a postclaptrappers_union wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 1:19 pmThe Premier League is a brand that broadcasts all over the world, so there are some cultural sensitivities that they want to respect. The rule is 'excessive celebrating'
Everything else I mentioned is what what I attributed it to - discouragement.
Found a link that clarifies my point

Re: Why do footballers take their shirts off when they score?
Fair enough if it’s a do or die game , winning title /cup/ avoid going down etc when just pure joy takes over . Though just for a random goal the yellow is justified .
Worth noting though that the mere notion of joy /celebration is alien to many so hardly surprising this invokes such rage

Re: Why do footballers take their shirts off when they score?
Surely Claptrappers has a point, all the cameras are on the goalscorer, and if he's no shirt on, then the sponsors aren't going to be right chuffed when no one can see their logo.
Money, as ever in football, talks.

Is it a code to tell us that they have personalised number plates?
Re: Why do footballers take their shirts off when they score?
Currently I wouldn't give a flying f what a Burnley player took off as long as they scored.

Not to mention the ones who cannot get their sweaty shirt off and get it stuck half way!claptrappers_union wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 1:19 pmThe Premier League is a brand that broadcasts all over the world, so there are some cultural sensitivities that they want to respect. Re: Why do footballers take their shirts off when they score?
Seen a few knee slide celebrations recently where the pitch is obviously not what they were expecting and they’ve gone AOT and practically done a cruciate. You’d think managers would stop that too.
