Why do footballers take their shirts off when they score?

If I was a manager this would drive me crazy, and if you pick up a daft yellow for celebrating, then you're only one bad tackle away from an early bath.

I'd love to know how many players have picked up a yellow card for taking their shirt off, thus picking up a suspension because it was their fifth, tenth booking of the season etc.

They take their shirt off so it's all about them and not about the team. I think it should be a straight red as it shows disrespect to the fans and the club

IDK but either way it could still add to the totting up process, and eventually count against them later in the season.

And yes incandescent is a great word to describe how the managers probably feel about it.

It's the same with dissent towards the officials, I appreciate it's a passionate game, but the refs rarely change their mind no matter how much you berate them, so why bother running the risk of a booking.

Also, it discourages political messages, unapproved sponsorship deals and provoking statements on t-shirts too. Then there is the time wasting, with players trying to put wet shirts back on as they walk back for the restart.

Jack Milsom may have done it in the 30s, but I don’t remember ever seeing it before the late 1990s. In my mind it started with Fabrizio Ravenelli pulling his shirt up over his head at Middlesbrough, then other players copying it and taking it a stage further.

Either way, it always struck me as a strange thing to do - all the more so when you know you’re going to be booked. Maybe modern footballers just like to show off how ripped they are…

Fair enough if it’s a do or die game , winning title /cup/ avoid going down etc when just pure joy takes over . Though just for a random goal the yellow is justified .

Worth noting though that the mere notion of joy /celebration is alien to many so hardly surprising this invokes such rage

Surely Claptrappers has a point, all the cameras are on the goalscorer, and if he's no shirt on, then the sponsors aren't going to be right chuffed when no one can see their logo.

Seen a few knee slide celebrations recently where the pitch is obviously not what they were expecting and they’ve gone AOT and practically done a cruciate. You’d think managers would stop that too.
