Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
This is the island where at some point in the future it's very possible an eruption or earthquake could see half the island slide into the ocean. There is a big crack from the last earthquake and the next big one could see a major landslide and create a tsunami big enough to inundate the east coast of the US.

The tsunami / US East Coast "theory" was debunked ages ago and shown to be not scientifically possible. But as the saying goes "A lie can travel around the world and back again while the truth is lacing up its boots."

I hate this application of that phrase. The best scientific evidence suggested it was possible. Later, after scientific advances, the best scientific evidence suggests it isn't possible. That's not a lie, that's the scientific method getting us to more accurate information.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 9:39 pmThe tsunami / US East Coast "theory" was debunked ages ago and shown to be not scientifically possible. Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
I disagree as the main flaw in the model that has been easily debunked was that the landslide would just drop in one go into the sea. We were well advanced enough scientifically at the time to understand the landslide would not act like this and therefore the model they created was a load of rubbish.PeterWilton wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 6:58 amI hate this application of that phrase. Seeing as my gas and electricity supplier is going bump, I'm thinking of going over and getting some lava to heat the house this winter.

So you're saying that scientists decided to just lie? That they knowingly let a false conclusion go by?Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 10:43 amI disagree as the main flaw in the model that has been easily debunked was that the landslide would just drop in one go into the sea. Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
No, the scientists will have modelled all possible scenarios which would have included this one and if the land mass did just drop into the ocean in one go then the tsunami hitting the East Coast is a possibility.PeterWilton wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 11:49 amSo you're saying that scientists decided to just lie? What I am saying is people took this and ignored the scientific findings on how likely this was going to happen and misrepresented it because it made for a great story and documentary.
The story went viral and eventually some scientists took the time to debunk it and put it into its real context. The problem is that once a story like this spreads it then sticks in peoples heads and no matter how many boring papers are produced to debunk it the message wont land like the exciting apocalyptic original version did.
Returning your question back on yourself are you saying that in 2001 we were not scientifically advanced enough to model how a land mass would react in terms of breaking up and dropping into the sea in relation to a volcanic eruption?

This is similar to the Doc who made the MMR - Autism claim that was debunked but people still believe it?Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 12:06 pmNo, the scientists will have modelled all possible scenarios which would have included this one and if the land mass did just drop into the ocean in one go then the tsunami hitting the East Coast is a possibility.

OK. So not scientists, then. Wires were crosses between us it seems. Probably my fault.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 12:06 pmNo, the scientists will have modelled all possible scenarios which would have included this one and if the land mass did just drop into the ocean in one go then the tsunami hitting the East Coast is a possibility.

You sure about that there are soil deposits that suggest the tsunami occurs every 125k thousand years with the Canary Islands being the sourceDevils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sun Sep 19, 2021 9:39 pmThe tsunami / US East Coast "theory" was debunked ages ago and shown to be not scientifically possible. Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
Just to be clear, I’m not saying it would be a mega tsunami but a 2-3m wave seems to be the consensus which is very different to the original scare story.
Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
We fly into Gran Canaria on Thursday evening. I suspect we won’t see anything but I’ll have a look out as we descend.
I’ve heard no mention of any issues affecting aviation, as there were with the Icelandic volcano.
I think it was a Channel 5 programme that mentioned the mega tsunami. It was nothing to do with a lack of scientific knowledge at the time - they simply took one persons view, that was subsequently debunked by various others.
Typical sensationalist viewing.

Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
Thats a different discussion but what I was responding to was the widely but wrongly held idea that a volcanic eruption in the Canary's "could see a major landslide and create a tsunami big enough to inundate the east coast of the US".

Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
TV presenter getting close up... I've stood in the crater of El Teide and looking back, the steaming crust could have been 1 cm thick.
The devastation, the size of the massive crater, one hell of a bang went off whenever.
Looking at the tsunami map of possible water travel, Heysham power station and Dungeness are in line of not just a tsunami but a tidal surge as well, as the wave is funneled into the Irish Sea and The Channel.
Now I don't want to scare anybody too much, but I've been cycling around saying 'How long to El Paso'? which is a line from a David Lynch movie.
I go to youtube and the news is from El Paso, just now and new cracks are appearing.
The last time I quoted from a movie of his for no reason, the next something happened, I can't tell you it's too much.
Thinking of booking a holiday in Austria some time soon.

Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
That's when the tremors caused by rising magma were first measured. Not when they started, nor when the volcano erupted.
Even if it was though it wouldn't matter because superstition is dumb.

It was a time of great celebration.
Dillinger was number one in the charts.
God 'n' was giving out free bags of cocaine in the Bigg Market Newcastle and the cry went out to nuke La Palma and get on with it because the live feed was getting boring to watch.

Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
If there's a big explosion and not just a collapse into the sea, then there must also be an air tsunami too.
How the weather is at the moment that happens if it does, will determine the effects of both an air and wave tsunami.

Dungeness will then supply Kent with its rainbow water.
Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
... And no more Kent for the next 100 years or so.
Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
Folk won't want to cross no more, that channel safety sorted and London well there's an awful lot of carpets to clean and roads to maintain and glass window to sort and food and horrible people so the Royal Family might decide to nuke London if that scenario ever develops because as it happens, the next 1000 year dynasty might be better off just living of Skye and nuking the whole of England and getting rid of everything and everybody and the flattening of it and then nature will take its own course and folk won't be around to invade etc.
How many royals does it take to make a light bulb though and the entourage might say well I'll have that 1000 year dynasty for my own family thanks and goodbye to the Windsors.

Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
If the gulf stream changes it's goodbye England anyway due to flood freeze thaw and total building stock collapse.
Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
Skis, wool, hake and venison, oatmeal biscuits and mead and a bit of slate and peat and pine and for the Royals I bet that sounds an appealing 1000 year breathing space for them.
Re: The volcano on La Palma in the Canary Islands has erupted
The English gone, how will that tribe of people be remembered?
... Perhaps as the warrior tribe that could extract a Harrier Jump Jet from the ground.
