Would you take a punt on any of the below free agents?
It is looking apparent that even after a good window we are still desperately short in CM and up front.
Would you take any of the below to help keep us up this season?
CM:
Wilshere
Ramirez (the one who played for Chelsea)
Paulinho
Bentalab
Mohammed Diame
Fernando
Striker:
Sturridge
Bony
Niasse
Andy Carroll
Obviously all of them come with a relative risk. But are any of them worth the punt

I think it can be classed as a good window because we signed players in needed positions. However I can understand that view.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 10:00 amHow can a good window be a good window if you fail to fulfil the positions you most desperately need?
For the record I would take a punt on Wilshere, Paulinho and Bentalab. I think all of them would improve us in the middle of the pitch.

The bar wasn’t set very high on a comparison to previous windows so on that basis you can understand some people thinking the window was excellent, some good names you’ve listed btw.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 10:05 amI think it can be classed as a good window because we signed players in needed positions. Re: Would you take a punt on any of the below free agents?
All of those midfielders are a bit too defensive. Need a bit more going forward. Of that group though I’d probably take Paulinho. A prime Wilshere is exactly what we need. A broken Wilshere is not though.

Bentaleb is one who catches my eye, still only 26, and with plenty of PL experience, and we definitely lack a physical presence in CM, so perhaps him, and maybe Bony if we can move someone like Ash Barnes on in January.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 9:57 amIt is looking apparent that even after a good window we are still desperately short in CM and up front.

Even if we can manage to keep our heads above water this season, I'd say we need 2 new CM'S, Stephens I assume will be released, so that would leave us with Brownhill, an ageing Cork & Westwood, so despite a much improved window this time we've still got serious work to ensure we can remain competitive in the PL.

Fernando is an interesting one. 29 years old and has played 65 games for Sevilla in la Liga over the last three seasons.tiger76 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 10:25 amBentaleb is one who catches my eye, still only 26, and with plenty of PL experience, and we definitely lack a physical presence in CM, so perhaps him, and maybe Bony if we can move someone like Ash Barnes on in January.

Just not quite sure he fits into our set up.
Re: Would you take a punt on any of the below free agents?
Paulinho is a top player, was incredible for Barca before returning to China. He's likely demanding a fortune and he's 33 though. He signed for an Arab team and just left after 4 games.
Fernando was excellent for Porto, moved to Man City and did a job. No idea how he's performed since, he's like 35 years old tho

Sturridge. Scores goals, 3 of our strikers don’t.

And he has been without a club for over a year. Fitness would be way off.

If our physio's thought Wilshere could manage a game periodically I’d consider taking him on but only on a pay as you play basis.

The match fitness would be yes, same as Bale when he went to spurs last season, took months for his body to re-adjust back to playing regularlySleeping Cat wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 12:07 pmAnd he has been without a club for over a year. Fitness would be way off.

Posted before saying Wilshere should not be dismissed,Get him training with us and subject to a medical offer him a 6 month contract. He would cost less than Stephens who no doubt is drawing a good wage and just cost an extra million by us not being relegated. He has only played around half a dozen matches. A fit Wilshere could be as effective as Defour was in our first season we had him

Re: Would you take a punt on any of the below free agents?
Surely there is still a class player inside Jack Wilshere, especially for a club at our level. OK he might need the right training regime and game management as well as a sponsorship deal of cotton wool from Smith & Nephew but he was once upon a time not so long ago verging on being world class.
Re: Would you take a punt on any of the below free agents?
Not seen any of them play for a while but Sturridge, Bentaleb and Wilshere are interesting options.
Re: Would you take a punt on any of the below free agents?
I don't think that's true at all, he played alot for them after signing and looked good.

Re: Would you take a punt on any of the below free agents?
Neither was Joey Barton at QPR towards the end , but for me SD's greatest bit of business and a far greater risk than Wilshere. Our CM area is possibly the weakest in the PL, and not been refreshed for several years. We should not rule out someone with 34 caps for England. He who dares, wins
Re: Would you take a punt on any of the below free agents?
It might be worth considering why those players haven't got a club. Chances are they have had offers but want something concrete.
For example, Wilshire is unlikely to want a pay-as-you-play contract given his injuries. He'll want a 3 year deal which pays him regardless. And it won't be on low wages. He'll want a Premier League salary.
I imagine they've had offers but want the best deal they can get. Can't blame them but do we want another player taking a salary whilst being available for a few games a season?

Barton was also one of the best players in the Championship the season before making 27 starts in the PL before joining us. Odd comparison to Wilshere who had the first half of last season off then managed 9 starts in the Championship.

Re: Would you take a punt on any of the below free agents?
The stats would show you're wrong.
Completed 90mins in the league just once during his 14 appearances, a total of just over 700 mins whilst there, 1 assist and 1 goal, 1 suspension.
In the league match day squad for 21 Games, started 9, subbed on 5, suspended for 1 and stayed on the bench for the rest, so out of 1890 available mins he played less than half.
Couple of appearances in the cups and playoffs, to round up his game time to 959 mins in 18 appearances.
He was so good for Bournemouth they didn't have him back and he's still without a club in mid sept....yet still people seem to think the Jack Wilshere from that Barca game is going to re-emerge after failing to do much in the championship.
Ain't ever gonna happen, he'd be an expensive gamble which wouldn't pay off.

Re: Would you take a punt on any of the below free agents?
Sometimes you need to take a calculated risk. Danny Ings played 14 league games in 3 seasons for Liverpool. Southampton signed him and he made 100PL appearances, scored 46 goals then they more than got their money back-£25m sale to Villa. As I said before "who dares wins"daveisaclaret wrote: ↑Tue Sep 21, 2021 9:36 amBarton was also one of the best players in the Championship the season before making 27 starts in the PL before joining us. I'd like premier league wages too but I'm not going to be offered them either, so I have to take the salary on offer or nothing. Currently Jack Wilshere is earning stuff all, but probably has the reserves not to need to work a day in his life again if it came to the crunch.
The simple fact for me is if they were that confident in their own fitness, they would take a pay as you play (even at least for an initial period). Id certainly say if he wanted to come play for Burnley, I would offer him a pay as you play, which turns to a salaried contract once he played over 50% of the games in a season.
If he completed 50% of games for us, given Dyche's reluctance to chop and change, I would suggest that would be no mean feat and he's dully deserve a contract.
Other than those terms, he can carry on enjoying daytime TV, for me.

barrels and scraping are the words I would choose
Re: Would you take a punt on any of the below free agents?
I'm talking about his level of performance, not the number of appearances. I'm not surprised they subbed him on and off given the complete lack of games prior to joining midway through a season. He was there to prove his fitness and stay injury free.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 21, 2021 9:43 amThe stats would show you're wrong.

I'd rather take Fernando/Paulinho off the list than Wilshere. Paulinho would've been on a fortune in China, he was the best player in that league.

To be fair down rover two wins in 25 and 2 clean sheets in 19 usually results in barrel scraping.
This is squad is currently in a shocking position

Are you hoping for a Cambiasso effect?
That's what I'd be seeking tbh.
Ramires was brilliant at Chelsea and if he still had the legs and drive for a season he'd possibly be worth a punt

Just a touch of class for a season, A former Brazilian international would potentially assist in an area we're weak in.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 21, 2021 11:37 amAre you hoping for a Cambiasso effect?

Lot of names there that I expect wouldn't relish a wet winter in Burnley.
