Berwick-Gretna on BBC Scotland if you want a football fix tonight..

Post by tiger76 » Mon Sep 20, 2021 7:52 pm

1-0 Berwick after 2 minutes, and yes they are allowed to compete in the Scottish Cup as they ply their trade in the Scottish leagues.

I guess this has to class as a border derby, there can't be far between these places.

They are both just either side of the border, just at different ends

That surprises me, I always classed them as being much closer, and if I'm not mistaken I'm sure Gretna used to play in the NPL back in the 1990's before switching to the Scottish pyramid.

Yep just checked, and they did play in the lower reaches of the English non leagues for about 20 years or so.

2-0 to Berwick now.
Not very high quality, but I enjoy any level of football

2-1 now, and at least you won't have to worry about VAR in this game.

Proper grass roots stuff at these levels, but you normally get a few meaty tackles flying in, old school footy to quote a phrase.

Is Gretna an Under 23 side?

Gretna reached the Scottish Cup Final in 2006. The first 3rd tier team to do so. There star player was a Doctor in those days.

Just thinking back to that Gretna side. If my memory is correct, the Chairman was a Scrap man from Sunderland, who either died, or lost money in his business and this led to the collapse of the Gretna Club.

Pretty much yeah, the archetypal rags to riches story, and then back again.

Brooks Mileson was the chap, and he died shortly after their Scottish Cup Final appearance, which led to the club collapsing under a sea of debt, and then reforming under a new name in 2008, hence the name they're now known by.

The nearest example I can think of in England is perhaps Oxford United in the 1980's under Robert Maxwell, and that ended in tears as well.

Berwick is a great place. Been a few times. Nice to walk round the perimeter wall. Very β€˜Scottish’ even though it’s not. Only been Gretna once. Played a gig there back in the 80s. Nice night. Great people. Pretty much opposite ends of Hadrians wall though. 😁😁😁

Well done the Gers. Berwick are my Scotish team, been to see them a few times. Great burgers from the van, local butcher makes them.

I went tho that Cup Final at Hampden. Great game and they were unlucky to lose. Followed them for a few seasons back then as they were my local side and we used to get free tickets from my lads' school.

Followed them up from the Scottish Third to when they went into the Prem and then had to play a their home games 80 miles+ at Motherwell/Hamiliton. Never went on in their one disastrous season in the SPL but the journey their was phenomenal.

Brooks Mileson was a proper character who had tried to buy Carlisle but was refused so bought Gretna instead. Some cracking entertainment up through the leagues and on the cup runs. Couple of hundred behind to goal giving it large. Weird mixture of Scots and Cumbrians as a fan base.

Kenny Deuchar was the star man but they also used to have a proper tricky winger in Ryan Baldechino (sp).

The day after the Cup final we went to one of our local pubs in Lockerbie for Sunday lunch with a good friend and his wife and sat at the next table was Rowan Alexander (Manager) and David Irons (Assistant Manager) . We said a quick thank you on the way out for a fantastic day at Hampden.

Last I saw of Davy Irons he was a copper at Loclerbie.

The Gretna ground has/had a huge car park, which was used for well attended Sunday markets, which went towards the running of the Club.

If you hear anyone from Berwick, you might not believe that!

Also, the money which came out of the ATM was Scottish, the last time I withdrew some!

I know Boss. It was theoretical. If they were near the wall they would be opposite ends.

So is Cornet as good as he seemed to be? And it’s nice to see our β€˜4th striker’ get 4. It sounds like we pretty much battered them in the last 40 minutes.

By the way should β€˜I scream for Cornet’? See what I did there? πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

Corn-Ay is rapidly becoming a Cult figure in 120 minutes of Football at Burnley ...

The fans love him and the other lads on the field ... 2 assists tonight and on another day probably a couple of goals too
