County Championship finale

Post by tiger76 » Mon Sep 20, 2021 9:56 pm

Despite an up and down campaign, Lancashire might yet finish on the ultimate high, and they've at least put themselves in the hunt if nothing else.

Preview here if you want to see the permutations https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/58619733

And a 10.30 start as you'd expect in late September.

Come on Somerset, atone for that abysmal performance on Saturday and leave it in the hands of the red rose 🌹🌹🌹

Come on Lancs.

I can't get my head around Jos Buttler, Liam Livingstone and Jimmy Anderson not playing. It's not like it's every year we have the chance to win it.

Livingstone has chosen to be a 1 day cricketer, a Hundred specialist, will not play many 4 day games for Lancs or Tests for England. Will have good earnings however.

I think Buttler & Anderson are taking breaks which, given their workload, is more than fair.

Hmm! never sure about putting teams in first, but we'll see I guess.

1 frontline spinner for Lancs, 3 for Hampshire, I thought Jimmy might have played this week especially, and given England's tour of Pakistan has now bitten the dust surely Jos could have played a few days.

Chris Woakes is in the Warwickshire team for their game.

Bailey strikes early getting Holland for 1 in the 3rd over,1-1 Hamps.

I think Jimmy will be under orders from England not to play, even though he has had time off since the 5th Test was called off, and will probably have a full winter off.
I just can't fathom how Jimmy, who has played at Lancashire over 20 years and rarely tasted success with them, would turn down the chance of helping them win the championship.

Buttler has had a month off, but doesn't really play for Lancs anyway.

Warwickshire lose an early wicket, going nicely for Lancs so far, but lots of cricket to play yet.

Apparently not, but he has decided not to play because of exhaustion.

30-1 after the 1st hour, good recovery from Hampshire following that early wicket.

Good morning's work by Lancs, 64-4, and young Balderson has really come to the fore again, a great spell by him to nab the 3 quick scalps.

Vince still there though, and he is the big wicket we need to get into the Hants lower order and tail quickly.

Tough track to bat on, so if Hants can get to 200, they're still right in this.

Notts 79-3 at lunch, and Warks 80-1.

Is that Keith Barker who played in the Lancs League for Enfield, whose dad was pro at Enfield & Rishton?

It seems to be yes, and he also had a brief footy career.

And his godfather is a certain Clive Lloyd.

It wouldn't have registered but for the same Christian name as his dad who was a decent player in the league. I think he eventually returned to Enfield and played as an amateur.

119-7 now Hamps, and we could do with finishing this innings soon, we don't want their tail to start wagging.

120-8 Parky with his 1st, we needed that the 8th wicket pair were threatening to become a nuisance.

129/8 at tea, hopefully Lancs will knock the last couple over PDQ post tea, and then set about getting a lead.

Indeed!, and I doubt Lancashire will find it any easier to bat on this pitch than Hampshire have, so every run is vital.

Even a win might not be able to secure the title, but a victory here would almost certainly ensure a spot in the BWT final next week.

Correct it is, although how much the weather may or may not impact is always difficult to judge at this stage of the year.

The climax of the English cricket season doesn't begin until the 28th September, and if it runs all 5 days won't finish until the 2nd October, that's incredibly late to be playing cricket in the UK climate, and I'm sure the season starts earlier and finishes later than I can previously recall, mind you with all these fixtures to squeeze into schedule I guess they have no choice but to extend the campaign.

Warwickshire looking like they are going to post a decent total v Somerset. Even if we win, they are going to be the spanner in the works.

All Lancashire can do is concentrate on winning our game, what happens elsewhere we can't affect.

Wells gone for 0, 9-2.

He wasn't happy was he, and I can see why he's annoyed at that being given out.
