Football predictions that didn't come true

Post by fidelcastro » Tue Sep 21, 2021 5:02 pm

I can't remember the exact year, but I once recall Pele saying he though and African team would win the world cup before the year 2000

I can also remember Kevin keegan, shortly after leaving the England job, claiming that it wouldn't be long before the future England boss would be looking at championship players to fill his squad. The occasional keeper from the second tier has got a call up but by and large this was a wayward prediction.

Anyone remember any more?

Who said Burnley would be the team of the seventies? Was it Jimmy Adamson?

They might have been if he hadn’t had the team sold out from under him.

Brian Clough. Polands keeper is a clown. After knocking us out of the qualies they ended up third. World Cup ‘74.

Yes and they possibly would have been if Bob Lord hadn’t sold it. Adamson knew how much potential that squad had, unfortunately Lord could only see the financial potential.

You got this in before me. Poland’s ‘clown’ of a keeper virtually knocked us out single handed.

Early on in the 2015/16 season. It was stated on here by a few, but this one sticks in my memory.

Think it might have been Bill Shankley, who in 1975 was predicting the region's FA Cup ties on Kick Off.
If I remember right, Bill predicted Burnley 6 Wimbledon 0.......

Plastic pitches.
Supposed to be the next thing in the 80s and Venables wrote “They Used to Play on Grass” in the early 70s.

Similarly I was in Cardiff City shop before the game with Maidstone in their third and last season in the league. The stones had not won away for a calendar year.
A couple of the home fans were bigging it up with the usual "these are shyte" type comments and predicted a 5-0 score.
They were right. Only it was 0-5. Only about 50 in the away end, but that is still up there as one of my most enjoyable games along with our win away at Bournemouth (old ground) when we had not won away for about a year. I've seen Cardiff play about 10 times, maybe half v us and never seen them win. I actually wanted them to win on one of the occasions.

Doesn't alter the point of the post though, does it?

I placed a wager on Rovers to get relegated this season.

Not looking good. 😕
