Safe standing allowed from 2022

Breaking news on the PA wires that safe standing will be allowed in licences areas if clubs have signed up as an early adopter from 1.1.2022

Clubs need to apply by 6th October to be approved for safe standing from 01/01/2021. If clubs wish to do this, then the safe standing option needs to be offered to both home and away supporters.

Making the top 1/3 or top 1/2 of the cricket field stand all the way across safe standing would be great if it is possible. Those who want to sit can sit towards the front with standing at the rear.

There is not a huge amount of sitting in the CFS anyway. Surely this would be an ideal place to trial it.

Presumably rail seats will be narrower than the old wooden seats so they could increase capacity in the CFS if they replaced a section of seating there.

Does the fact that the stand was built as terracing mean that it's better adapted for rail seats?

The Cricket Field Stand was never built for terracing.

Interesting set of criteria

Clubs that want to take part in the scheme need to fulfil a number of criteria which the SGSA says includes:
  • Having seats with barriers/independent barriers - which must be in both home and away sections
Fans must be able to sit or stand in the licensed area
Seats cannot be locked in the 'up' or 'down' position and there must be one seat/space per person
The licensed standing areas must not impact the viewing standards of other fans, including disabled fans
There must be a code of conduct in place for fans in the licensed standing area
Looks like there would still be the option of sitting, although a bit pointless if everyone is standing

You know how when one is ill and one takes tentative steps to recovery?

... And that convalescent feeling on initial perhaps timidity?

The crippled fans can limp back on the terraces to Zimmer-frame stand, all beaten, if you're lucky.

Which part of the ground would you like authority for?

The cricketfield stand please

Is that that part of the ground currently under investigation by the FA because of fans behaviour?

Yes it is

Next please

North Stand (Longside) Lower and/or Jimmy Mc Lower would be great for this...although would this then potentially affect the view from the exec boxes?

This is brilliant news going forward - and I hope this is registering with our football club.

Info from the FSA on this today

The Football Supporters’ Association (FSA) was contacted last night by the Sports Ground Safety Association (SGSA), who told us that the option for football clubs to offer licensed standing at all levels of the game in England and Wales has at last been passed into official Government policy.

The SGSA has now announced steps to invite Premier League and Championship clubs to apply to offer standing areas from 1st January 2022, bringing to an end an FSA-led Safe Standing campaign that has lasted more than three decades.

The FSA has always argued that standing could be introduced – an argument backed by the overwhelming majority of supporters. There is a tradition of fans standing at games as it increases choice, improves atmospheres and ensures supporter safety when hosted in properly managed and licensed standing areas.

Kevin Miles, chief executive of the FSA and longstanding Safe Standing campaigner, said: “We are beyond delighted to finally claim a win for the FSA’s Safe Standing campaign after extra time, penalties and more than a few replays and postponements.

“Today’s announcement is the result of prolonged and sustained campaigning by football fans – a victory for ordinary people with ordinary jobs who refused to accept the Taylor Report’s contention that standing could not be managed safely.

“It started in a pre-internet, pre-mobile phone world where running a campaign meant Sunday morning trips to social clubs in Altrincham, teleconferences, leafleting political gatherings in the rain and letter-writing; relentless letter-writing.

“More recently it has been very much a team effort, a sophisticated, co-ordinated partnership between the FSA, other fans and fans’ organisations, colleagues at the various football leagues and authorities, football clubs, MPs, civil servants, friendly journalists and more enlightened factions of the UK policing authorities. We’ve come a long way.

“Too many people to mention have worked tirelessly for so long to bring about today’s news. Those people know who they are and we look forward to having a well-deserved beer or two over the next few weeks and months. Who knows, we may even take in a match from a standing area.”

Pete Daykin, the co-ordinator of the FSA’s Safe Standing campaign, added:

“Today’s announcement from the SGSA is an outbreak of common sense! It brings to an end a farcical situation in which fans at every ground continue to stand in their thousands – often to the detriment of those who can’t or don’t want to stand behind them – but that clubs can’t officially recognise or tackle in a constructive, proactive way.

“It also rights a historical wrong, breaking once and for all any suggestion of a link between ordinary football fans who prefer to stand and criminals, troublemakers and hooligans. It sounds preposterous to be saying it in 2021, but this was for so long the view of many of those in charge of running the game and the country, who neither understood football nor took the time to get to know its supporters. Today is a huge day for match-going fans.”

It was previous owners led by a chief exec - but they always felt that the cricket field end was the best potential area. Lee Hoos was very keen to have the chance to have safe standing at Burnley but it just wasn't possible.

I have no idea what the current owners think on it. The club were contacted recently by the Burnley FC Supporters Groups Safe Standing rep but he received no response.

I think we missed a trick when we put new seats in without any such consideration a couple of years ago while other clubs were installing rail seats - and it is those forward thinking clubs who will get the trials I would think. We just don't have anywhere to trial it.

From an older man's point of view, I had to stand at both Anfield & Goodison. There were no after effects after Goodison because I had a wall to lean on, similar to Spurs two seasons ago. I don't think some people realise just how difficult it is to stand for 90 minutes with arthritic knees. Safe standing will give me the option of sitting or standing with a rail.

Bring it on - this is brilliant news today.

Never too late though, standing areas should ensure no one will stand in front of you blocking your view.

I know a few who have stopped going to away games because of not being able to see because they can't stand.

Unless there is a plan to move the Away fans it can only be trialled in the CFS.

Be interesting to see how this progresses and indeed if the Club show any interest.

Stupid question alert: Is it envisaged that you would be allocated a safe standing seat and be expected to stay in it? Or you can roam around the safe standing section?

I would assume that they could not convert all of the CFS into safe standing as I expect there will be a provision to offer away fans a seating only area of some sorts

Allocated a position just as you would for a seating area.

Surely those 2,400 plastic seats could be used to replace the seating in the Bob Lord, plus an additional 500 or so?

Yes, potentially, though I’m not sure the current concourse could take any more. Actually, if they went for the two step model providing the depth allowed, they could increase capacity by quite a lot.

The stand was never designed for terracing though. The old terrace there was completely flattened.

None of our ground was but you've still got old terracing with seats installed on them at some Premier League grounds - off the top of my head Aston Villa, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Everton, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester United.

Although I would welcome the return of standing I doubt if half the posters on here (I include myself by the way) could stand for upwards of two hours. 😂
All seating was terrible for the game. The atmosphere at the Turf has never been the same since the Longside was torn down.

I believe the home section of the cricket field is still the old wooden seats? Maybe they could remove all those. Transfer the back section of the away side to the front section of the home side. Then rail seat the entire back half of the stand.

I have often pointed out that allocating seats on arrival at away games is a plan
Those who wish to sit occupy the rows nearest the pitch and those who wish to stand do so behind them.
The present fiasco where 14 yr old stewards are too scared to get persistent standers to sit down doesnt work
We had nonsense a couple of seasons back at Newcastle where some teenagers were standing up on the front row

I would think that most 'Bob Lord' fans are happy with the current wooden seats thank you, as they are warmer and wider than plastic ones.

I agree, and I argued against change for years, but at some point we have to move with the times, which is what Pace seems to be trying to do. The plastic seats appear to be creating a larger capacity as they are around 15% smaller.

You reinforce my point.

You would think though, that in this enviromentally thinking world, seats made of an alternative to plastic would be on clubs minds?

Maybe I'll write to Alan Pace.

Go for it. I know the smaller seats reinforces your point, but it’s the easiest way of the club increasing revenue from ticket sales. It won’t affect tread depth. I prefer the wooden seats though, as I suggested earlier.

Used to.love standing in the Long Side as a kid back in the 70's but as a much older, grumpy bloke im not in favour of their return.
They are a feature that can breed anti social behaviour and let's face it, there are plenty of idiots attracted to football matches, the Arsenal game being a case in point.
Heysel and Hillsborough should be reminders to us all.

Got an email off after your first response. Got an automated reply, so at least I know they got it. I'll let you know if something more substantial arrives.
Can you let me know as well please?

A recipe for disaster.
It absolutely isn’t.

You have thousands of fans up and down the country standing in all seater stadiums, which is far more dangerous.

There have been lots of serious injuries with fans falling forward/backwards, causing a domino effect.

Edit- you have the elderly and young kids being forced to stand and missing the action because those in front are blocking their view.

I don’t know why some fans automatically think safe standing equals a return to hooliganism, we get that anyway.

I would imagine he’ll post something on here if he gets a response from Mr Pace, so I wouldn’t be concerned about not being kept in the loop.
