Interesting article on Saints signing older lower league players purely for their u23 squad, to help with player development, a support player so to speak.

Gary Dicker at Brighton has done something similar

Burnley did just the same in 1973, signed Jimmy Robson to play in the reserves.

Lancashire played against us last Sunday.

I'm surprised we don't occasionally play our fringe (squad) players.
it doesn't happen very often in the PL2, but I believe they play other games behind closed doors (as they say ;) )

When David Jones was training with us, I thought it was handy to have a quality professional utility player who’s job it was to train with with the team, fit into different positions for drills and to support the coaches and players.

Someone fit and experienced enough with no intention of appearing in the first team as they’re in a coaching role.

We're way ahead of this, we had a support manager with Coyle and then Dyche has snapped up a whole variety of support players.
