The Ryder Cup
Re: The Ryder Cup
I normally enjoy watching it, or at least having it on in the background, but that crowd (or at least the trumpesque part of it) is having the same effect as the grunting etc in women's tennis.
As someone posted above, it's showing no class and seemingly proud of it.

You're surprised that a substantial number of Americans are showing no class? It's par for the course (no pun intended) when this event is held over there and has been for as long as I can remembertimshorts wrote: ↑Sat Sep 25, 2021 6:18 amI normally enjoy watching it, or at least having it on in the background, but that crowd (or at least the trumpesque part of it) is having the same effect as the grunting etc in women's tennis.

Mc Ilroy & Poulter were picked on past merits but their form has deserted them for a while now.
Justin Rose should have been part of this team if you ask me.

Re: The Ryder Cup
It's the Yanks so to be expected. Although the best Ryder Cup I've ever watched was the 'Miracle at Medinah' in 2012, so it's probably best when it's played in the US - you just need to shut them up. It's currently looking though that the final day tomorrow is going to be very short.Longsidelenny1882 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 25, 2021 9:38 am500 yards par 5 1st shot all the crowd shout get in the hole pathetic

Much of the crowd bear an uncanny resemblance to the red-necked pond life charging round Washington last November.
If we win will they spend the next few years saying we stole it?

Re: The Ryder Cup
Europe really need a 3-1 win this session. and I'm glad PH has rung the changes, there was simply too many guys not at the races yesterday, and while it's not quite last chance saloon yet, it's getting mighty close to do or die.
The Spanish duo in the top match makes sense, as Europe need to get off to a strong start today, the Americans have played well, but they haven't been placed under enough pressure by Europe. Hopefully that will change starting with the Saturday foursomes.
If it goes 7-5 after this session it's a totally different outlook.

Garcia/Rahm Europe's stellar pairing on day 1 already 2 down after 2, Europe in danger of being out of this even before we get to the singles.
Re: The Ryder Cup
Yes certainly looking like tomorrow is going to be a bit of a crap finish at the current rate. But I guess plenty of time to go.

Better news Europe up in the 3rd match, and boy do we need something to turn this around, the problem is the Americans are playing incredible golf, and crucially holing pretty much everything they putt.

Europe fighting back, US up in 1 Europe up in 2. A/S in the other, Momentum changing maybe?
Europe have to win this session to stay in touch, and thus far that's what they're doing.

Trying to think of the final day in 2012 - was Europe something like 6 down prior to the singles?

Re: The Ryder Cup
Not sure of the exact number, but they were a long way back going into the singles.
Still plenty of work for Europe to do, But as long as they can get within a couple of points, anything can happen on the Sunday.

Europe getting crushed except Rahm
You should try watching it here with American comms. They are as bad as the crowd

Re: The Ryder Cup
No surprise Garcia/Rahm and Fleetwood/Hovland have been paired again, but baring a huge afternoon for Europe this will be over early on the Sunday I'm afraid.
Re: The Ryder Cup
I'll go 2-2 over those 4 games making it 11-5 for tomorrow and like you say, all over early doors.
I just looked back at 2012 when Europe came back - it was 10-6 going into the final day.

Re: The Ryder Cup
Europeans finally hitting their straps, but they might have left it too late unfortunately.
Europe up in 1, and the other 3 A/S but they've only played a couple of holes thus far.
If Europe could win this session 3-1 or better it will just about keep them within range.

Re: The Ryder Cup
Rahm coming to the fore AGAIN for Europe, but the difference now is others are stepping up alongside him, and if Europe can maintain this standard this might start closing up.
The Americans are human, and have started making a few mistakes, shows precisely what pressure can do even to the best players in the world.

I was hopefully optimistic. Can not see us getting us close today. Too many players out of sorts. Record score of 18.5 to 9.5 is probably under threat as well.

Re: The Ryder Cup
Vastly improved session from Europe to draw it 2-2, sadly it was a session too late too seriously affect the final outcome.
And the RC was lost on day 1, it was always going to be a tough ask against this crack American team, but to gift them a head start made the task well nigh impossible.
What's really frightening is given how youthful all of this American team is, they could well dominate for the next 2/3 Ryder Cups following this one.

We’ve only really got Rahm now who can compete with the top half a dozen.
Feel for Mcilroy at the moment. Don’t know why, but he just isn’t the same golfer since he’s become a dad.

Re: The Ryder Cup
Strange decision to send Mcllroy out first when he's so out of form. I know it's easy to be wise after the event but it's obvious Lowry should have featured in the Foursomes, probably Fleetwood as well.

Re: The Ryder Cup
I don't think it's that strange. We need the miracle of all miracles to win, so giving him that responsibility might stir some inspiration. It's worth the risk, if Rory goes out and kills it, would certainly lift the rest. It's pretty academic though, even if we had the better team it'd be impossible more or less. But the US team is far better

I think the order we've gone for looks about right but we are not good enough and too far behind to make a difference. I just hope we stay close or ahead in pretty much every match and get it into the back 9 before our fate is finally sealed

Re: The Ryder Cup
The big disappointment for me has been Hovland.
A birdie machine. Picked for all four doubles sessions, in the lead in all four matches (three clear in two of them) and lost all four when the going got tough.
Reminded me of the Clarets this season. A lack of resilience.
Hovland wins three of them, we are 8-8 going into today.

He did win The Players last year and won at Quail Hollow this but had you said in 2014 he'd play the next 28 majors and not have a sniff, folk would've thought you were bonkers.
I've said for a while "peak McIlroy" may very well have been and gone.
It happens, even to the very best golfers.

Yes and a rookie at that, Europe are struggling due to their big beasts not performing, have McIlroy, Poulter or Westwood won many points between them, and they're the experienced core you'd be relying on to amass a decent haul over the 3 days.TheFamilyCat wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 7:15 pmWow. Re: The Ryder Cup
Europe even getting mullered in the singles, this could end up being really embarrassing by the end, USA could even hit the 20 points mark if this carries on as it is.
Re: The Ryder Cup
Maybe a Ryder cup too far for the likes of Westwood and Poulter.
Re: The Ryder Cup
Looking really grim now, and will be for the foreseeable. US team is young and talented, Europe aging - remind anyone of anything?

Re: The Ryder Cup
Looks that way doesn't it, and you have to factor in how draining simply walking around this huge course can be.
It's been notable how generally the US have driven way longer than Europe, and on a large course such as this that's a big advantage to hold.
And even on the dance floor USA have sunk some enormous putts, and missed very few short ones, whereas it's been the complete opposite for the Europeans.
Hence why the scoreboard reads as it does with a healthy lead for the USA. And they've thoroughly deserved their victory over the piece.

It was disappointing because I rate him on form as our 2nd best player - fantastic battle with Morikowa today. He is young and needs to learn how to guarantee a win while well ahead. We haven’t many who can hold their own at this level, he is one so 0.5 pts out of 5 is for me the biggest disappointment.
Golf is about the final few holes as those who play it know - whether its the monthly medal or the Ryder Cup, all good work can be thrown in the final holes.
Worth saying though, the true test for USA is when they play away, on a course not hand picked and on a setup not designed for their players (in this instance favouring the long hitters with accessible rough in most areas and soft greens). They have been unbelievably good though, and I suspect will win next time too, no blame to any of ours for that.
