Drinking Alcohol in your seats

Post by Quickenthetempo » Fri Sep 24, 2021 12:41 pm

It seems this is back on the agenda for football matches.

What do you think?

Pro's
Reduce half time madness.
Have a drink of your choice in your seat.
Don't have to throw it down your neck after queueing for 10 minutes.
The club will double sales.
Should get a far better range and quality.

Cons
Spillage when a goal goes in.
More people getting up for toilet breaks.
More cups/bottles for throwing potential.
Cost of matchday will go up for some (obviously their choice)

“Spillage when a goal goes in”… not something we have to worry about on the Turf then!

If it means scenes of beer throwing like we see from fans watching on big screens then it's a no from me.

Clubs will clearly push for this given the increased revenue they can expect but there are definite concerns too.

I watch non league fairly regularly, and it's great stood in terracing with a pint. Or it was, until they got promoted to the Conference/National League and it's now banned.

Never any issues with folk throwing ale or owt.

Plus the beer list was excellent.

So in a week when it’s strongly rumoured that the government want to ban betting adverts on strips it’s also rumoured that drinking is to be allowed during the match again?

Go fathom, because I can’t!

I wouldn't want to sit with remheads with 3 or 4 bottles under their seats, I think I'd consider different policies in family stands though, like when they had a no smoking policy in the Jimmy McIllroy Stand before the government ban.

Seems a bit odd within a day of talk of banning gambling sponsors the next scheme is to encourage people drinking more alcohol.

Two different sources - the alcohol one is coming out of the fan led review.

Who would be responsible for decision making on this? Is it government/legislative or an FA decision? Would clubs be assessed individually by the local authorities when issuing safety certificates?

I have to say, I’m all in for this, I’d love to watch Burnley with a beer but think it should be restricted to certain stands so that fans have choice.

Government - they introduced it in the 1980s

I don’t see it being a big issue personally for home games, but there again I sit in the Bob Lord stand, where we for the most part are a pretty sedate lot.

However, I can see issues on away games where you never know who you’re going to be sat next to, behind or more to the point in front of. A few times I’ve provided a soft landing for fans falling from behind me who have been three sheets to the wind having already been on the lash, I can only see this increasing with the added bonus of also getting soaked.

Anybody that’s been to watch a game in the Bundesliga will know how good/bad drinking in the stands can be, especially when you have fans in the upper stands

Anyone who has been to the UK will know the majority of people who need a drink in the 45-50 minute spells they are in their seat can’t handle their drink.

Great news, as is the betting ban.

I wonder if a way to prevent overdoing it is to limit everyone to 2 or 3 drinks each using scans of tickets / cards? Surely it is possible to do it with modern tech?

One of my first memories of watching Burnley sat with my dad watching drunk Millwall supporters throwing their beer on the Burnley fans below them in the stand, then starting fights when people got fed up of them. My dad, no football hooligan with his boys 7 and 11 coming home with a six inch slash cut in his sheepskin overcoat from a Stanley knife one of them had brought in…. Had he just been wearing a ‘coat’ we’d probably have lost our father that day.

What a good idea to return to those days.

I wouldn't mind having a beer in my seat, but it's not really fair on all those who want to watch the game without getting soaked everytime we score.

Just ban supporters. It’s that simple. Cinemas, theatres, gigs etc etc allow human beings to do simple things like drink beer whilst watching whatever it is they are there to watch. Why is football any different?

We can allow this and safe standing. But stricter measures need to be in place. Consistent standing in seated ares needs a firm ban. Anybody throwing beer needs a firm band. It’s really not very hard to sort out .

Is it really needed ? Plenty of time to have a drink before and afterwards. I’m sure most can manage to do two 45 min slots without a drink. It’s probably a better experience for other fans that don’t want to drink and kids too the way it is now.

Just copy everything about the Bundesliga where stadiums are packed and there's a good atmosphere. Smoking aside, although I'm not even sure if smoking is legal in the Bundesliga stadiums.

I think everyone does, you aren't forced to drink at a football game. I'm sure you can see why glass will never be allowed at football.

Cons - It's very cold in the UK and drinking cold beer on a cold day is a dreadful idea.

Cons - It will greatly increase drunkenness in the stands.

Pros - We'd be able to drink alcohol at our seats like responsible adults.

Not against alcohol in the stands per-se. I like a pint at half time and by the time I get one I have to guzzle it down. Not a fan of keeping the bars open during the game. I'd also put a limit on beers sold. Some fans have probably sank between 4-8 pints before kick off and probably are already half-cut as it is. No need for someone to not be able to make a pint last for 45 minutes. You're there to watch a game. So maybe a voucher system can be applied in some way so you can take your beer to your seat and only vouchers are allowed with your proof of ticket, one per person, per half in the stands. So you can get one for the 2nd half. Don't agree or want fans popping off to the bar every 10 minutes. There's no need. I can make a pint last an hour an a half and I can drink heavily on occasion but absolutely do not need any more than one pint per half.

I have attended many Bundesliga games and never had a problem with the sale of beer and drinking beer in your seat. SC Freiburg (probably others as well) has superb sturdy plastic beer mugs with handles that interlink into each other so you can carry a few drinks in each hand. At many Bundesliga grounds beer sellers walk round the stands selling their product.

This something that has bugged me for years. You can have a beer whilst watching cricket or rugby or a concert, etc. But it is illegal to do it when watching a football match. The law restricts the possession of any alcohol in vehicles going to a match. A train passing through a line between two places that the football teams come from cannot serve alcohol, even if the train never stops!

Yet people can consume alcohol before, during half time or after a match. Completely bonkers. Probably based originally on a Thatcherite view of how working class people behave when they drink at football matches.

If people misbehave at a match, drunk or sober, then eject and / or arrest them. But don’t allow them to spoil it for everyone else.

To be honest it's already bad enough with people getting too drunk and coked up, you'd imagine it only being worse if they keep their buzz all the way through games.

It's a shame really because as usual they wreck it for others.

I'd like it too change but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see more violence.

If we get back to official areas of standing then yes, perhaps try it. It’s easier and less disruptive to fellow fans when people are stood and you need to pass them. I have a horrible feeling there’ll be beer thrown in the air at times (the new fad when watching football with a beer :|) and it’ll cause trouble though.

Overall though I don’t see why people can’t go 45 minutes without a beer, but everyone is different.

I would have been 100% behind this if it wasn't for the moronic craze of throwing booze in the air whenever there's something to celebrate. Don't really fancy being **** wet through with covid ridden lager.

I’m hoping it doesn’t happen for the reasons above like bellends throwing beer in the air whoever there’s a goal.

I’m more than happy to have a pint, pre, mid and post match.

I enjoy a beer watching Rugby or Cricket, different tempo, different vibe. I wouldn't think a return to drinking at Football would encourage me to participate though. It's bad enough at some away games when the juvenile element start throwing beer around.
