He was excellent today, and I just hope his injury isn't too serious.
He starts up front with Wood and we score 2, that can't be a coincidence.

need him back next week, Barnes and Wood are pointless as a partnership and Jay has done his hamstring so it doesn't sound like he will be available

Crucial he starts, hope it's just a knock.
Re: Matej Vydra
Played much better today as a team, but that's not surprising if you play your best footballers, it kind of helps.
But Vydra was excellent, movement off the ball caused them problems, and an assist too.
Hopefully will only get better the more minutes he gets in his legs.

I love Barnes but he shouldn’t be anywhere near the first team these days.

I hope he signs a new contract, but can't see that happening until SD goes back to what was proven to work last season, and that's start him whenever he's fit to start.

He certainly played well today & caused Westergaard plenty of problems........which is why he assaulted him when he got the chance.
Re: Matej Vydra
We are so clearly and obviously a better side with Vydra in every sense. Pace, attacking intent, pressing, technically.
I expect him to bag against Norwich next week.

Re: Matej Vydra
At this stage I suspect that he might be reluctant to re-sign for us irrespective of game time from here on. I accept that I/we are on the outside looking in, but he does seem to have had the rough end of the stick with regard to selection throughout his time with us, hardly the career boost that he'd hoped for and expected. Even if we now/finally make him a first choice starter ahead of Ashley Barnes and he performs well throughout the season, he'd most likely - particularly as a free agent - use that raised profile to secure himself a more lucrative contract elsewhere and can we really blame him? Having even this season been regarded by Sean Dyche as behind AB in his selection choice, he hardly owes us any favours, or indeed loyalty.

Re: Matej Vydra
As well as him making Cornets goal, on a few occasions when he was running both their CBs ragged, he dug out a superb little flick right into Woody's path, but he didn't gather it. If he had he'd have been clear through on goal.
Thought that was his best ever game for us today.

Glad Vydra had a good game, it makes you wonder had he started against Arsenal whether the result would have been different. He needs to start games, his sharpness, fitness etc will improve. Dyche needs to give the lad a proper extended run, he’s way ahead of Barnes and Jay for me.

I thought he was our best player by some distance today and that's often the case when he's been on the pitch over the past 12 months. Easy enough to excuse a lack of goals if he keeps that up as we look fairly toothless without him.

An assist for Vyds on Tuesday, and an assist today, Yes he could improve his goal ratio, but he offers so much to our play that for me he has to start.

Re: Matej Vydra
With him and cornet first half we looked dangerous every time we went forward. Even with the long hoofs up field we looked like scoring because those two have the pace to either push the Leicester defenders upfield or to break in behind themselves.
Get him a new contract because a player of his class should be worth millions so let’s not let him go for free.

Apologies I thought you were being serious. Went over my head I'm afraid.
My fear is if Jay & Vyds are injured, we'll be back to Barnes & Wood, and both are hopelessly out of form.
So let's cross our fingers that one or both of them is available for the Norwich game, which surely has to deliver our first win of the season doesn't it.

Totally agree with the OP and he was brilliant today.
Sorry there's a 'but', if Barnes or Rodders had fluffed their lines like when Vydra got in, then, well you know.
Can he get us the goals that we need over a season? I have my doubts.

During the end of last season when we were under lockdown he played and we were doing really well.
He needs to start all games from now on as Barnes is sadly not the player he was.

Re: Matej Vydra
I don’t agree. He was being chased and hounded by a Leicester cb. There is simply no chance Barnes or Jay get into that position because they wouldn’t have got near it. The issue with Barnes is the lack of pace within the team when he plays. Stops our entire build up play from functioning as play breaks down so frequently. Vydra can break in behind as well as dropping in to link up play. Jay is similar but not quite as good as vyds for this. Jay get more goals though.Bin Ont Turf wrote: ↑Sat Sep 25, 2021 9:55 pm

Re: Matej Vydra
Dyche used the logic of "Barnes defends from the front" recently to justify his inclusion. But we continue to concede with him on the pitch. Surely a 5 man midfield would be better than Barnes. Either way, we've known for a while that the Wood/ Vydra partnership is when we create most chances, and if people didn't realise it last season, Barnes just isn't up to it. He's not been awful every game this season. But he's never been better than average, and he has been well worthy of a large number of those 3s on the player ratings.

Re: Matej Vydra
Worrying that we may lose our most dynamic striker next summer.
I’d say at this stage, securing his signature on an extension might be more important to us than Tarkys.
Alan’s going to need to throw some money at him & SD is going to need to start playing him every match as a guaranteed starter. As another poster has said, makes you wonder how many points we might have had he started the season.
I agree with most things Dyche does, but his arguments about “true fitness” just don’t wash with me. You get fit from playing games so we should’ve been playing our best players from the start and prioritising getting them fit.

I love what Vydra brings to the team but he has got to start contributing. We are a team that doesn’t score a lot of goals, we can’t afford to carry a striker that contributes 1 goal every ten games.
Let’s hope the likes of cornet and McNeil can get him more involved this season.

Re: Matej Vydra
We’ll see over the course of the season whether he genuinely just needed to get fitter again, or whether Barnes is preferred. If Vydra does leave in the summer, I don’t blame him. He’s a good little player and after 4 years here he has played 64 times. It’s sad to see his talent go to waste. He could have scored hatfuls in the championship or even a good number in the prem if he’d been given a good run in a side. Let’s hope he has a good season and Alan can work the magic in convincing him to stay.
Re: Matej Vydra
Contributing like his excellent assist yesterday? I showed you his ‘contributing’ stats from last season on another thread and he was leader when it comes to creating chances. If he can chip in with 8-10 goals for the season that’d be fine. We can usually rely on Wood getting 14 ish and it looks like Cornet is going to add a genuine goal threat.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sun Sep 26, 2021 9:28 amI love what Vydra brings to the team but he has got to start contributing. In 64 appearances for us he has 6 goals and 5 assists. He’s a great player that stretches defences but I understand why Dyche doesn’t prefer him. For the record I’m not suggesting we drop him, I am just suggesting that he needs to do more with his opportunities. He beat the last defender 3-4 times yesterday and fumbled the ball.

The 2nd one was a long ball over which he has to outstrength the defender and control while running at pace.
If he scored either he would be in the 80m bracket.

I also prefer when Vydra plays, it’s easier on the eye and more exciting. But it’s true that the stats don’t make his selection as cut and dried as some are making out. We also know that he joined the squad late and without the required fitness levels to start games. He has now regained his place in the starting eleven and I would expect him to keep it next weekend.
Some people get extremely precious when Vydra doesn’t make the starting eleven though.

Re: Matej Vydra
Vydra averaged 1 in 5 last season if you look at minutes on the pitch which was about equal to Barnes and a lot better than Jay.
The only player we've got who is consistent and good enough to regularly hit double figures for goals is Wood so in my view we should be looking at the striker who brings the best out of him and the rest of the team and since the start of the calendar year that player has been Vydra
