He's been brilliant (apart from his kicking), so I'm not knocking him because I have any kind of agenda or owt, but I think most people, including Pope himself would have him at fault for both goals yesterday. The first he should stay upright longer and dive for and then probably save reasonably comfortably and the second he's caught already well off his line basically in no mans land so actually has no choice but to go forward and try to get to the ball first, which was never going to happen. Had he been further back and had the option to stay in the goal it's unlikely Vardy scores (again)

Why did he rush out to vardy for the second goal.
If he held his position vardy wouldent have beaten him from that angle.
It's called desperation.

He has lost trust in his defence to be able to sort things and wanted to try and get involved himself out of desperation.

We were easily carved open on quite a few occasions.

We won't come up against a Vardy every week with his speed and movement.

Short memories.

It was only 12 months ago that Pope was named in the 2019/20 PFA team of the season, so I stand by opinion that he is world class but is suffering a dip in form.

He’ll be back.

Why would an injured player (Hennessey) be on the bench yesterday ?

Nowhere near but he’s a good goalkeeper & more than good enough for us, I’m not quite sure how he could be labelled world class or the reasoning behind that what justifies such a claim.

Surely to be world class you have to be able to get into any team in the world? Like De Bruyne, Messi etc.:..?

Pope wouldn’t get in to half the premier league teams

Absolutely agree. There are only a handful of goalkeepers who are world class today.

Sometimes we can over exaggerate our own players abilities & lose sight/perspective the same can be said about Dwight who’s also a good player but not as rated highly elsewhere & rightly so, we are where we are with a few odd good players & mostly championship grafters if it wasn’t for Sean cobbling that together into a makeshift cohesive outfit we’d be toast in terms of PL sustainability.

I don’t think he did particularly well with either goal yesterday. Can’t prove it obviously but I can’t help thinking that an uninhibited Pope would have saved one of the two. Hopefully he will get his confidence back and put the injury behind him. He remains a very good keeper, certainly one of the best half dozen ever to have played for the club

I wouldn’t say they are all better goalkeepers than Pope. More desirable yes (kicking), but not better. That’s why Pope suits us. He’s on a slight dip in form but he has previously given some awesome performances for us.
They're all better all around goalkeepers than Pope, you can argue 1 or 2 on the list, but the rest isn't even a debate really.

Not a bad shout we’ll replace NP with the ex palace goalkeeper who was considered number 3 at SP with 1 of the worst defensive records in the league last season that’ll sort it.
Nooooo. Bring BPF back from Sheffield; I accept it won't improve our results, but think of the fun we will have on here, watching Steve1956 go into meltdown. ;)

He seems to have stopped diving? I’m not sure why or how, but his massive wingspan used to be his greatest bonus. Now he seems to stick a leg out or watch it go in.

Not sure what’s going on currently.

Allison, for example, has made far worse errors than any Pope has made in his time with Burnley.

But gets leverage by his team scoring 3 or 4 every game.

What is a world class keeper anyway?

Look at Alisson at Liverpool for example. He is far more error prone than Pope yet he's regarded as being world class.

Distribution is far more important than making saves these days apparently.

A "world class" goalkeeper? I would say it's one who would be capable of representing our planet in a game against extra-terrestrials :D

I think he is very good, am still not sure his form has dropped but what I am sure of is we seem to be playing on the front foot, attacking more and the defense is not what it was and seem to offer more room to the opposition. With a player like Vardy with his speed, he is gone from defense if they find that splitting pass, as they did with the second, I accept he probably shouldn't have come out but the defense should also have been back on the line, but they were to slow or to far forward. I also agree I think he should have done better for the second, but i think it was a bad day, don't think he's stopped being a very good GK and just a bad day for him.

One thing I have noticed over the last few games is when he's kicking out from a goal kick, his run up is the same every time, it in the opposition right hand side or out for a throw in, the opposition seemed to be loading the right hand side and won the ball more than we did. Surely he can occasionally start his run up from a different position and try to land it somewhere different than that 3 foot square he always seem to be in.

I'd blame our defensive line for the second goal rather than Pope. Pope could see the danger and gambled on the through pass being over-hit.

Taylor played Vardy onside, but he himself was gambling as he wasn't sure if Tarks had done enough to play him off.

Poor goal either way

No, but Pope seems to make less glaring errors. But keepers like Alisson get a free pass because their passing is better. Would you say Alisson is better at coming for crosses than Pope is, claiming high balls under pressure, for example?

Agree. Surely sticking a leg out only covers half the distance covered by diving full length with arm fully outstretched? Maybe it would require more time to set himself to dive, as opposed to just sticking a leg out?

Isn't DDG renowned for making many good saves with his legs in exactly the same way?

A goalkeeper should never go to the corner of his box like that unless he's sure of getting there first.
It was an error, but shouldn't have been allowed to happen by our defence.

Of course but that's when he reaches the ball with his leg, which he couldn't on Saturday. He might have covered the ground with a dive (but might not!) but I fully accept that sometimes reaction time available only allows the sticking out of a leg.

Neither of those goals were much different to what he's been doing for the past few years. He does tend to go with his feet more and there have been plenty of articles mentioning it over the years.

Similarly, he is always a bit advanced and plays as a sweeper keeper (more than any other keeper in the division).
