Pope

Post by ClaretAL » Sat Sep 25, 2021 6:04 pm

Firstly what a game, thoroughly enjoyed it and I would have taken a point before kick off. From what I have seen live and on TV of Pope so far this season he has been average at best, so this isn't to call him out and drop him now, but definitely the extraordinary Pope we have been used to in getting to shots he had no right to, and you could argue we were spoiled. I just hope his injury has not got in to his head, along with missing the Euros etc.

I think the observation that his distribution isn't as good other goalkeepers has affected him. It either that, or I have noticed that side of his game bit more now.

At fault for both goals today, vardys 1st (for them) only had one place he could put it and decided to go with feet and 2nd he’s not agile enough to be coming for that as for his kicking I’m baffled people say practice makes perfect but I’m not sure.

Comes for crosses and take pressure of defence and good shot stopper from distance

Is he depressed by now being Number 3 for England ? Is he worried that if he stays at Burnley the England situation will get worse ? Is it worthwhile giving Hennessey a game ?

Not the same since the injury and has an increasing tendency to try and save with his feet as his first resource. A few clean sheets and his confidence will be back I’m sure.

He’s not making a lot of saves at the moment. We seem to concede without being put under a lot of pressure. He wasn’t wholly to blame for either goal today as Vardy had managed to get into two good goalscoring positions. However I think he should be going for the first with his arms, like most keepers do, and he had no reason to come off his line for the second considering Vardy’s angle and the covering defenders. Poor day at the office. Hope his form improves.

His kicking is better than the keeper at the other end today.

Having a dip in form, as previously said on the thread. A couple of scruffy nils against will see him back.

Really poor for their second no need to come out when he had no chance of winning the ball.

I’m a big Pope fan though he slightly misjudged the 2nd and was already commited ,which is meat and drink to a high class finisher like Vardy.

Hasn’t really been the same keeper since the injury. He was a key player in our survival last season. Very poor this season though

His form has really dropped off since back end of last season. You’d think due to injury but he should be ok now. That second goal was dreadful, he did the same think vs Leicester last year. If opposition players have the ball at the edge of our box why is there a need to come running out and leave the goal exposed when 9 times out of 10 they won’t end up scoring from it anyway. It seems to be something Pope has tried to add to his game as a sweeper keeper but I think he was a lot better before when he focussed on saving the ball from going in the goal.

Confidence is massive and so no surprise our keeper has looked less impressive whilst the team have struggled. It's almost inevitable. Worrying thta his kicking remains terrible though. The kid that played for our school football team couldn't kick it so he went and got extra coaching and then was able to kick it. That such a wonderful goalkeeper isn't able to put this particular problem to bed is quite something. Not expecting him to start doing stepovers or anything but even his kicking of a dead ball is often wayward. A couple of those today could have cost us a goal.

His kicking last week when under no pressure was bloody awful. It’s okay Dyche sticking with him because dropping him would send the wrong message but that’s Dyche sometimes he’s stubborn. I’d start Hennersey next week.

I didn't like his decision on the 2nd goal, but it's still a goal conceded through lack of speed in defence.

Kicking isn’t something he will ever be great at, most goal keepers are decent enough footballers as well as goal keepers but Pope looks more like that kid in PE that doesn’t play football.

One of the best goal keepers in the league though, not a chance I’d drop him

Think its confidence-on his day outstanding. His catching of high crosses today was superb. He got into trouble with a Mee pass in the first half where he got no distance. A few more results like today and him and the defence will gel

He’s allowed a few errors is Nick, seeing as he’s been literally world class since the day he made his debut for us.

As was mentioned further up - class is permanent and he’s still the best English ‘keeper around in my eyes.

I respect your opinion but world class! Did you ever see the likes of Banks, Clemence or Shilton? I still believe that Pickford is way ahead of him but that’s just my opinion of course.

And the frustrating thing is that he didn't have that much to do. Thanks to Matt Lowton mostly.

Top 10 goalkeepers in the world? you must lack any kind of football knowledge then and think only the PL matters. Very good keeper is Pope but he's not even top 20 in the world and on current form, he's not even top 100.

I thought he was at fault for the Arsenal freekick, wasn't in the corner, slow to move his feet and his starting position made it way too easy. I don't know what has happened to him, his form has completely nosedived.

10 goalkeepers who are better than Pope:

Ter Stegen
Courtois
Oblak
Rulli
Donarrumma
Handanovic
Patricio
Lopes
Navas
Onana

and that's without mentioning Bundesliga/PL.

Gulasci, Neuer, Sommer, Mendy, Alisson, Ederson, Emi Martinez, Pickford, Sanches, Kaspar

I wouldn’t say they are all better goalkeepers than Pope. More desirable yes (kicking), but not better. That’s why Pope suits us. He’s on a slight dip in form but he has previously given some awesome performances for us.

You can say.that but if he hadn't come people would still be calling him . He obviously did what he thought was right at the time. To be fair it was a poor goal to concede all around the back four didn't offer much cover

Not a bad shout we’ll replace NP with the ex palace goalkeeper who was considered number 3 at SP with 1 of the worst defensive records in the league last season that’ll sort it.

This is basically it. He's great at shop stopping usually but he's never often in a 1 on 1. The way we play teams usually don't get 1 on 1s. We basically force long shots and limit the angle the opposition can shoot. This makes it a lot easier for the keeper. A mistake was bound to happen versus Leicester more than any other team due their counter attacking and our higher pressing this year.

There really are some muppets out there. Pickford is very poor in the air and doesn't command his box
Nick may have fallen into the feet first trap Joe Hart school of goal keeping.Perhaps Billy Mercer needs to work on obliterating this highly ineffective tactic
Nick should be getting more England games but when a Championship team keeper who was relegated last year, gets the nod ahead of our best keeper since Adam Blacklaw, Nick is bound to get affected by such stupidity

If he held his position vardy wouldent have beaten him from that angle.

Very silly move and to do it against all players it had to be Vardy. He's probably rounded more keepers in his career then any striker. Made it very easy for him.

I don’t think there is a need to call people muppets, I like to call it a difference of opinion which is what makes discussion and this board so interesting. You have your opinion which I respect but I would never call you a muppet just because I don’t agree with your views.

Having been to the game and seen the highlights, he is not quite the keeper he was previous to his injury. I am sure Billy Mercer will work on it
