If they had any decency they would put Bruce out of his misery now, not pretend they are going to do a comprehensive review etc!!
In the grand schemes of things will he bothered? Yes okay it’s is home club but he’s known for sometime its probably inevitable. Financially he’ll be okay and I’m sure he’ll get another job. There are more important things for a lot of people to think about at the moment in this country than Bruce losing his job, like how am I going to feed the children, how can I pay my heating costs, rent, etc, etc. Football in comparison comes at the bottom of the list for me.

I agree Burnley Ace. I was merely replying to the Bruce situation but then a little guilt got hold of me and my mind wandered off.

Dwight Gayle made Collins look like an amateur in the league Cup game and was desperately unlucky to not score. I'd have them both
No he didn't, in fact, he only had two shots, one hit the bar and the other Hennessey saved. He was that good that night that he was subbed after 76 minutes
He hasn't scored a goal since December 2020 and has only started one game this season and has spent 96 minutes on the pitch. Tarkowski has scored more goals since December than Gayle has and Ben Mee has 3 in the same period.

To be fair Ashington if I was taking a stab at it I would say that’s a fairly similar goal return to Vydra and Jay in that time period

Is that true for many?

Would it have been discussed both on the main news and sports programmes at great length if it wasn't a big deal?

I thought he was desperately unlucky not to score when he hit the bar. Left Collins for dead on the turn. It's hardly an argument to say he hasn't scored when he's hardly played...

Jay has scored 1 PL goal and 6 cup goals in the same period and Vydra has 3 PL goals and 1 cup goal.
Gayle has scored 11 goals in 82 appearances for Newcastle in the PL, including cup games, Matej has scored 10 in 82 including cup and Europa League and Jay has scored 18 in 81 including cup matches.
He is now 30 years old, which is older than Matej so not a great deal going for him at the top level. although he has a good record in the Championship/

Why has he not played in a team which has struggled for goals? WHy did he score goals in the Championship for Toon and also when on loan at West Brom. The argument is that he is not good enough to hold down a place in the team at the top level. He has played in 7 cup games since Toon were promoted and has failed to score.

He hardly plays because he's just not that good.

Even with a run of games he doesn't score a great deal in the PL, but he does in the league below.
He's a championship level striker despite repeated claims on here over the years that he's a good PL striker.

Newcastle will become another Watford with managers in and out like revolving doors now the Saudi hit squad have their hands all over it. Probably spend a fortune in January but massive costing individual stars do not necessarily make a team work.

If you think Saudi operates any differently to the rest of the Middle Eastern countries you are incredibly naive.

Some of the worst humanitarians issues I have personally seen were in Dubai and Oman.
And what exactly did you witness that makes the Saudis behaviour pale into insignificance?

Dwight gayle would only be useful if we get relegated. Never cuts it in the Premier league. I know it's Steve bruce, but joelinton gets picked ahead of him on merit.

It’s football now - anything goes. You allow money from Russia/Saudi/Qatar to buy the clubs. You award a World Cup to a country that has banned homosexuality (oh and that was pretty much Russia 2018 too btw so 2 world cups in a row where being a homosexual is illegal - my god).

The governing bodies evidently don’t care.

I will just follow Burnley and hope we can continue our underdog story in this horrendously run sport.

Between this and the other Saudi thread, I think if you filter Newcastle93's comments on this takeover through the prism of understanding that what we're witnessing here is a man using this forum to work himself into a pretext to bail on Burnley and follow Newcastle for the next few years (his prerogative, no criticism from me) you begin to understand that there's no common ground to be found between his recently adopted intransigent positions vis-à-vis Saudi Arabia, and everyone else's basically understood notions of common sense. I think one or two of the others whom we see bending over backwards to defend this are using it as little more than an angle to get a dig at Burnley FC/Dyche/Pace/ALK etc. Lights on, no one home, etc etc etc.

Dad worked in the UAE for about ten years (Al-Ain)

Mum and little sis went out there with him for a big chunk of that, and I visited for a couple of weeks

I don't know what Newcastles experiences are, but certainly for a Western expat, it was a seriously unreal place to live, with alcohol only being allowed to be sold with a permit, and only served in the three main hotels.

From what I can gather, its a lot nicer for Westerners in UAE than it was in Saudi

Course, if you are not Westerner/Aus/US citizen, and especially if you are from the sub continent, you are treated like utter s**t

But Qatar and Saudi are a lot more extreme than the UAE in pretty much everything

Couldn’t agree more. Not so much football in general but definite the PL. Even at its inception some wanted it to be a closed shop dependent on ground size and support. It didn’t happen that way but that’s what it is becoming. The PL isn’t football, it’s a fckn very rich circus.

other than the obvious morale issue with the Saudi takeover them buying Newcastle has just raised transfer fees and wages yet again. PL now has 8-10 teams in it with the rest scrambling to get by.

City and Chelsea are miles ahead in the earning stakes and if United sack OGS they might get a top6 slot

It's a huge job to shift the dross Bruce has lumbered the club with on big wages and long contracts.
Earnings: irrelevant
Shifting players: irrelevant

They have *unlimited* money. They make Man City look like paupers relatively. Just wait for the record sponsorship deals from Saudi companies to start rolling in.

The Glazers sold £137m of shares in Man Ut just before this was announced. They're not daft.

I see that the rest of the Premier League clubs want an emergency meeting over the takeover because they’re not happy. And in another bit of news the government won’t release the minutes of meetings they had with the Saudis and Newcastle or who attended. I wonder if anything will come of it?

Newcastle fans seem to think Mike Ashley was one of the worst owners there's ever been in football. He pumped millions into the club, even allowing them to waste £40 million on Joelinton.

Obviously they never bothered to look at what happened to Blackpool under the Oyston family in comparison.

I’m no fan of Ashley, but it it wasn’t for him, they’d never have been in a position to be sold to such people. If Newcastle fans are delighted to be bought out by these wealthy backers (we can all see why they would be) they should, as difficult as it may be for them, accept that it was because of Ashley that this deal has been possible.

I’m with Vegas on this one - the money in football is stomach turning and ultimately it’s shitting all over the once beautiful game.

Couldn’t agree more. Shearer doesn’t help with his spouting about the club standing still for 14 years. It’s very easy of him to criticise when your held in high esteem by the supporters. I think Ashley as much as I’m not a fan of his should be thanked for the money he pumped in.

Following the Saudi takeover that just leaves 3 clubs at a shade better than Even money to Odds On for relegation Norwich (2/7), Watford 17/20) and Burnley at 11/10.

Have Newcastle ever had 'a golden era'? They were known as a cup team in the 50's with Milburn et al and they won the Fairs Cup in the late 60's but they've never really had anything that could be considered as memorable with league form. And S alluded to already they have spent plenty of money under Ashley that brought them nothing.

The Middle East is a place you go to make lots of tax free cash come home buy a house with the proceeds of hard draft in reasonable conditions. Most construction and oil workers don't concerned themselves with the vagricies of the very dodgy regimes than run these countries.

I think one or two of the others whom we see bending over backwards to defend this are using it as little more than an angle to get a dig at Burnley FC/Dyche/Pace/ALK etc. Lights on, no one home, etc etc etc.
I don't think that's true at all unless you see praising/excited at another team as negativity towards Burnley. I don't see how Newcastle being taken over by Saudi billionaires can be a negative towards ALK? and certainly Dyche?

As a football fan I'm excited to see how the Newcastle project plays out, I think in general it's good for the top of the league. I dunno how that is me criticising Dyche? the club or ALK. I think you're on the defensive here, when there is nothing to defend.

Couldn’t agree more. Shearer doesn’t help with his spouting about the club standing still for 14 years. It’s very easy of him to criticise when your held in high esteem by the supporters. I think Ashley as much as I’m not a fan of his should be thanked for the money he pumped in.
I think Shearer was banned from the club or something, certainly banished. I read Ashley changed a bars name inside the ground (formerly named after Shearer). So Shearer is just biased and mad and generally the Geordies seem to think they deserve to be fighting at the top of the league, despite history suggesting they shouldn't.

I am amazed the perception is Newcastle suddenly have £***bn to spend. No doubt male pride will dictate them going head to head in a d*ck swinging contest to prove 'My oil well is deeper than your oil well' but even in the most exaggerated of minds I doubt the whole Saudi Investment Fund has suddenly been diverted towards Newcastle United.

It wasn't too long ago people were looking at Wolves and the worth of their owner/sponsors and predicting a 'Top 6 Club' within 5 years and that isn't looking likely within 10 years.

Anyone backing Newcastle to win the Premier League within 3 seasons?

A few on here for certain by the sounds of it. Learning the words to 'Blaydon Races' as we converse. Who cares what it's all about?

With the BBC Gossip column mentioning Graham Potter as favourite to replace Steve Bruce, a 'We want the Saudi's Out' chant might not be too far away

It's the football equivalent of, *sobbing* "my sister's husband buys her flowers and tells her he loves her all the time, why don't you?"

Also, you used the word project unironically. Football isn't the same exact thing to me as it is to you. That's fine, but you'll never convince me to like this. As well put together as the show is (and it certainly is), it's at the point where I barely even watch MOTD anymore because I'm a bit fed up, and that would have been inconceivable to think when I started watching footy years ago.
