Newcastle takeover

Post by claretburns » Wed Oct 06, 2021 6:04 pm

Newcastle's takeover by a Saudi consortium is about to go through after a settlement over piracy issues on beIN sports.

Quoted by Craig Hope, local journalist in the North East and works for Daily Mail.

Currently the geordies are annoying with their we are massive mentality, if the deal goes through they will be totally insufferable.

Was having a drink with a Geordie on Sunday chatting about Footy and have to say he was anything but "Insufferable" or "We are Massive" but then again he is my Nieces Husband 🙂 and probably is when he is with his Toon m8s 😂😂😂

Not good news for us really. Big relegation rival this season.

Report in the paper at the w/end. Journalist said that previous Newcastle takeover had been blocked by the "big 6" because they didn't want anyone else to be able to "join their party." Journo argued that it made a strong case for regulator deciding these things, rather than Premier League club votes.

Definitely not. I had Newcastle down as one of the few teams we could potentially finish above.

Dunno, I’d consider Cornet, Ribera & Collins an improvement.

Sense theirs might be on a different level though :(

Really really bad news for us. With these owners they could spend 50-60m in January.

I’m not referring to signings made, I’m talking about results, which have been very poor since the takeover. Just demonstrating that this may not necessarily benefit Newcastle, particular in the context of this season.

Fair point.

Usually I’d say sacking a manager is not going to be helpful, but not sure it matters with Bruce :D

Their takeover might be on wholly different scale and involve a whole lot more of a cash injection than ours, but they still have to wait until January for it to make any material difference and as is said so often, January is a short window and a crap market for serious strengthening.

Living in the area i have heard all the whinging and moaning about this, I am glad they are looking to get what they wanted. I have my reservations but proof will be in the pudding.

For what it is worth ignoring the paranoid geordie moaning the only LEGAL barrier was the illegal streaming in Saudi once that is gone there isn’t anything that blocks it going through.

I don’t see it making a huge difference this season I didn’t see them as part of the relegation picture at the end of the season anyway. After this season it could propel them 1 of 2 ways to oblivion or where they all believe they belong competing for major honours.

I live in Newcastle and regularly spend time with groups of them. I've never sensed a "we are massive" mentality. They generally have a "we deserve to go down" and "apathy to Ashley" mentality. But this takeover worries me for 2 reasons. One: they will clearly invest in January. Two: the PL seem happy to let anyone run a club as long as, on paper, it looks like it's someone else. The fit and proper owners test is clearly more about protecting the PL than it is about protecting the clubs

This is a takeover on a completely different level to ours, nobody should make any mistake about that.

It’s also just about the most morally contemptible thing you can imagine to football in this country, even on top of everything that’s already happened. But that’s by the by from our perspective.

Agreed, Saudi Arabia is a vicious totalitarian state. We may be relegated but I for one would far rather that than be owned by that sort of people. The Premier League is increasingly a nest of scumbaggery.

Apparently the Saudis are now forgiven for the BelN illegal streaming. Strange how this prevented the takeover and not that Saudi Arabia is one of the most odious countries on Earth that shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near the English Premier League.

Could be interesting.
If they replace Bruce and spend big in the transfer window then they need to get it right first time, because it has the potential to go wrong having such a big upheaval.
I suspect Bruce would see out the season because he's not doing a bad job, he'd then get potted in the summer.

There's dodgy, then there's you're the ruling monarch of a autocratic/theocratic state which exports extreme Wahhabist Islamism and you order dissident journalists to be cut up into small pieces in such a public way as to silence other dissenters-dodgy. This is all happening at the instruction of the crown prince to help launder his own and the reputation of his backwards-even-by-middle-east-standards country.

Are you really comparing the millionaire Venkys to the trillionaire Saudis? I read this takeover would see them become the 2nd richest club in the entire world.

Are you worried them owning Newcastle football club is going to bring there culture to the north east?

I really don’t understand this view at all. The Saudis will pump hundreds of millions of pounds into a relatively poor area of the country. It’s all positive for Newcastle, they could become the next Man City. Given there owners are worth ten times that of Man City’s

I think the concern is this will be another example of ‘sports-washing’ where a regime with a questionable human-rights record gains further legitimacy through its ownership of a football club. The owners of Manchester City have poured millions into a deeply deprived area of Manchester and undoubtedly raised the club up several levels, but back home they have some questions to answer on the HR front.

There is nuance to this beyond doing a good thing for a club, and a bit in the community. The use of high profile clubs in geopolitics is a thing. To some people that is deeply unethical, to others… not particularly bothered.

One positive is you will have a team on your doorstep who might spend the money you want, play the football you want and be successful. You could finally become happy in life and the forum would be spared your nonsense.

As for your silly response regarding bringing their culture to the North East, some people (accepted normally adults) tend not to be keen on the way certain states are run and their idea of what to do to people who disagree with them, then there are kids who's first thought is how much money they will spend and how big they might become.

Just what we need. Yet another club we've competed with to step up the spending even more. Nothing against Newcastle but we may as well play in a different conference if we're only left competing with 4-5 teams for relegation each year.

More money just wrecks the game.

Just another day in the sleazefest that is the EPL.

Still, it'd be nice if we can stink the place out for a few more seasons.

Newcastle is a good footballing town but its supporters have been totally demoralised by Ashley running the club into the ground over the past 14 years. They deserve something better, whether Saudi Arabian owners is it, is another question.

Yes that one. My point was clearly aimed at those suggesting that a takeover at Newcastle now automatically puts them out of the relegation picture. Like our change of ownership, the improvements don't happen overnight.

Yes that one. My point was clearly aimed at those suggesting that a takeover at Newcastle now automatically puts them out of the relegation picture. Like our change of ownership, the improvements don't happen overnight.
Fair enough RB, I agree. I misread your post. Apologies.

On a side note, maybe they will come in for McNeil and offer stupid money

If Newcastle come out of the January window with no signings because the owners are surprised that agents charge fees, you might have a point.

Were they surprised they charged fees? Or were they surprised at the amounts they charged, or the nature of their business?
