Can't see me giving up my Sky Q box until it becomes defunct. If you have unreliable broadband, an OLED TV and surround sound there is aboslutely no reason to buy a Sky Glass.

I used to be a TV engineer and a Scouse friend of mine asked me to install his TV he'd bought of a man in the local pub
When we tried it didn't work and removing the back noticed it was a wired vision Redifussion set with most parts not there
He'd be sold a stolen one and didn't realise it was impossible to use as the signal was piped to clients houses in an early form of cable TV and useless anywhere without subscription

I bought a 75" tv of a scouse mate of mine for £300. Plugged it in and got this

Correct me if I'm wrong. You cannot record and keep TV programme with the new Sky Glass system? We record quite a lot of none-Sky stuff, like documentaries and vintage films they show on the freeview channels.

It's obviously aimed at getting new subscribers and customers upgrading who still have the old boxes. But does anyone on here with Sky Q plan on getting one?

I've got a Sky Q box, however my TV is around 10 years old, so is only HD and doesn't have WIFI so can't stream anything on it.

I've been weighing up the Glass, mainly for the TV, but having thought about it over the last few days I can probably get something better for a similar price. I've already got a Sonos Beam, so not overly fussed by the speakers.

Will probably wait until there are more user reviews about before deciding.

That’s a strange summary! It doesn’t mention hidden costs and it actually calls the tv impressive for the price point.
You're right - I should have been clearer.

It's advertised at £13 per month.

However that goes to £21 per month if you want the large TV, payable for 4 years. Then you need to add the £10 upfront charge, the minimum Sky subscription fee of £26 per month, £5 per month if you want a hi-def feed, £25 per month if you want Sky Sports, £11 per month if you want Sky Cinema, £5 per month to keep the kids happy, £10 per month for multi-room and £50 upfront for the additional puck required.

If you're in the market for a cr*p TV, What HiFi are happy to report that this is an excellent example of the genre.

Enjoy.

Chris similar situation here

Got Sky Q, TV is 13 years old next March. I'm definitely going to upgrade soon but I'm certain it will be a new TV with Sonos sound bar rather than the Glass.

Thank you peeps for the info on this thread, I was thinking of getting a Sky glass as we are going to fit an electric fire and then put the tv on the wall above it. Getting rid of the skybox was the main reason to consider it and the reduction in wires. However reading all the comments I think I will keep my Sky q and buy a new quality TV.

A couple of things I have gleaned over the last few days....but still not had full training as I am full time on Sky Mobile so we are bottom tof the queue lol! The Glass does not have an inbuilt freeview player so should you cancel your subscription then you would need to get a freeview box. Also, it doesn't record in the true sense of the word like the Q box does...it adds the shows you want to watch later to your 'playlist' and accesses them later from the 'cloud'. However, the interface is pretty impressive and brings together all your subscription services into one interactive menu....for example you don't need to change between apps if you want to watch something on Netflix or Prime for example, they are all in the same menu. The voice function is pretty cool too...don't think it is enough for me to buy one though even though we will be getting a staff discount (not much of one though!!). For those of you saying it is expensive for the pucks and whole room, this is the equivalent pricing to Multiroom and mini boxes with Q so no change there.

We are about to do the same and I have decided to mount the Q box on the back of the TV, so the TV will protrude a little bit more but the box will be out of the way....best thing with Q, you don't need direct line of sight for the remote.....

Those two are its Achilles heel. A no-badge mediocre TV with no inbuilt freeview and only a 2-year warranty. You can buy a quality branded TV with a 6-year warranty for a similar price with freeview and a multitude of apps, like Netflix/Prime etc. Also, this TV gifts Sky nearly all the cards when you do the 18-month contract dance, though I suppose this is its USP from a Comcast POV. Glass will appeal to those who never research their potential purchases. The kind of people who walk into a used car showroom and say 'I'll have the big blue one over there'.

It will be at least a couple of years before I consider this.

Cost needs to come down.

Internet speed for my property needs to go up

I’m hoping there will be the option to get sky through a puck only so I can have better choice for tv and audio

That would be an interesting concept and I am pretty sure not beyond the realm of possibility....I suppose it could work in the form of Alexa or Firestick....

Sky Glass sounds good although I would imagine in a couple of years things will have progressed even further, for now though I’m happy to stick with my current tv and basic Sky+HD box. The HD box does have a slight fault which Sky have acknowledged and offered to replace it f.o.c. with the Q system, I’ve rejected the offer because we have one other tv, just a small one in the bedroom, it works from a magic eye. With Sky Q we’d have to pay for multi-room which I’ve refused to pay.

All the plus points about Sky Glass are either cosmetic or gimmicky. No dish, only 1 lead, voice control and apps included in interactive menu. None of them actually improve performance.

Unfortunately the negatives outweigh the positives compared to Sky Q. Picture not as good as top range TV's, sound no better than a good soundbar, no recording, no Sky if your Broadband goes down and less live channels.

Not sure if it well ever completely replace the Sky box but it will suit people in flats and apartment blocks who currently don't have Sky.

All I will say on the matter of Glass is that the Sky Trading Team have massively underestimated the interest in the product....there is a dedicated team going to start contacting pre-registered interested parties from Monday...let's just say...gonna take them longer than they expected!

I was really interested in it so I can imagine the response has been positive. It potentially solved a problem for me when I first saw it and having the best TV/Screen tech etc wasn't such an issue.

It's only when I have seen the detail and realising that I will have to ditch my perfectly good Sky Q set up to get one (and it is not something I can buy and add on to my existing package) it has made less sense to me.

I'm not sure how many people will realise the detail behind it so lets hope the conversion is strong for the dedicated team contacting the pre-registered people and the target market for those people who want sky but cant have/don't want a dish are now better served as a result.

Perhaps you can help us out with more info. I went into Garlick today and the oled TV’s look very impressive. However one thing they mentioned was to steam 4K programs you need about a 20 Mbps and my broadband rarely gets over 5Mbps.
What speeds does sky glass require??
Bare in mind I pay £40 a month for Sky broadband with a promise of a min 13 Mbps but I have never ever got near half that speed.
We don’t have cable here, just the 1980 phone lines.

Don’t think it’s ever been installed on the estate. On the local group a guy was trying to get people to join together and if there was enough interest it was said they would install it but not sure what ever happened to that.

It is quoted at 10Mbps required but obviously the higher the better....if you feel you are not getting what you were 'guaranteed' then give Sky a call...

So Essential is basically non-fibre and so your speeds are going to be dependent upon the Openreach copper network and also the number of people on the circuit you are on....I have seen people on Essential not getting anything near 1Mbps.....until you get fibre then Glass is not for you....

Remember that the speed delivered to your house is not neccesary the true internet speed you'll get, especially at peak hours.
The speed you get at your TV also tends to be slower than what enters your house, that is unless you have your network wired with Ethernet instead of WiFi.

I expect Sky will implement some kind of traffic control router side to prio TV.

WiFi can reach high speeds, but is harmed by neighboring networks, in a remote area you may be okay as long as the router and TV are close together and not more than a room apart.

We're slowly seeing the end of broadcast TV as we know, soon it will all be IPTV, and hopefully it will mean we don't have to pay for the crap we don't watch any more.

There's next to no way Sky will offer this to non-fibre customers. I'd expect people to need at least the entry level fibre speed of 25mbps, probably safer going with the faster 72mbps package though.

Enter your details here: https://availability.samknows.com/broad ... nd_checker to see if fibre is available to you.

Did any of you subscribe to Sky Glass, thinking of ordering it today,43 inch television,Netflix,SkyUltimate package and Sky Sports £64 a month, seems like a pretty good idea,is that cheap, seen some on here quoting their packages at over a 100 pound, any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou.

I have a friend in the business who says that this is the way that tv viewing will go as dishes become outmoded and the old transmitters are becoming more expensive to maintain. However, the hardware used in Glass is not good quality.

This has been the case for a while. We won’t be seeing satellite dishes in the next 10 years.

I’ve not seen Sky Glass ‘in the wild’ yet, but even the television adverts make it look crumby. Looks like an overpriced mediocre tele to me with the skybox inside it.

I’m surprised Apple didn’t get into this game before Sky. Shipping superb screens, user-friendly iOS software with free AppleTV (whatever it’s called), Siri and FaceTime and so on with good quality surround sound speakers as optional purchases.

It’ll be interesting when they do get involved though. Because yes, it’ll overpriced and yes it’ll be snobby… but they’ll make Sky Glass look dated

Now that I have left Sky I can tell it how it is....I would not buy Glass in a million years at the moment. Crap technology, bulky TV, no in-built receiver so if you cancel Sky you are left with a dumb TV....need a freeview box at minimum....

What’s the current fascination in society with making products worse not better?

We have shrinkflation, we have dodgy tat made cheap elsewhere in the world, we have fewer post offices, fewer banks, fewer traditional pubs.

Now we have ‘Sky’ becoming, well, ‘Not Sky’. They’ll have to rebrand themselves as ‘underground’ or something.

I have Sky Q with top of the range 64” TV and sound bar with fibre broadband that is about 64mb/s. Anything through broadband (e.g. Amazon Clarets matches) is noticeably worse than Sky HD let alone Sky Ultra HD. If Sky move everything to broadband it would be a huge backwards step. Nothing can convince me otherwise.

What's the difference between Sky Glass and a Smart TV loaded with the Now TV app? It sounds like Glass is purely streaming and 'catch up', just like Now TV?

Thats what we have fretters ... along with the BT TV box for recording (2 channels that conflict at same time)

Sky and BT sport in HD so no probs with grainy screens

The more accurate question is what is the difference between sky and now tv and that will lead you to the fact that whilst you get a lot of sky content, it’s not as comprehensive and the user interface and functionality of sky is not the same either.

I was tempted by this at the end of last year but the showstopper for my family is the fact that we record lots of programs in box sets and watch at a future date. As I understand it with Sky Glass you don’t record but rather bookmark programmes - the problem with this is that the programme bookmarked may no longer be available for various reasons (in contrast to the current stored version on the hard disk). If anyone know different to this I would be interested to hear.

I wouldn't contemplate buying an overpriced telly that turned into a dumb TV the moment you ended your subscription. Yeah, I know you can buy a box, but it's hardly the point. I just find it pernicious that a company would come up with this.

It's all about retentions. The 'threat' when you bargain for a better deal is; we simply flick a switch and your TV no longer receives our output, and the same goes for all the free-to-air channels as well.

I don't know anyone who has one.

For me, if you want a decent TV, you'd buy a decent TV. If you wanted more affordable TV, you wouldn’t buy a SkyGlass.

I don’t have it (and don’t want it). I don’t see the point of replacing a far superior television and sound set up for a streaming television.

I have enough issues with SKY Q (reboots) to want to move to an internet only streaming service.

My daughter and her husband have SKY Glass and they have issues with the box freezing, occasional internet connectivity issues to the TV (despite a top speed package) and, when watching live sport, the delay is greater which is more a frustration than an issue (getting goal alerts before they go in on the screen).

The picture etc. isn’t bad by any means, just not as good as they got on the TV and SKY Q that they replaced.

Streaming is obviously the future, I’m just not sure that it’s quite there yet.
