Lowton or Roberts?
Lowton or Roberts?
Would be very harsh to ‘rest’ Matt Lowton against Southampton as he’s been playing very well for the last 12 months BUT we do need more of an attacking threat in the (whole) team and Roberts might be just as strong defensively and yet be more dangerous and creative than Lowton going forward.
We need to break up this ‘unlucky’ run of form and some very difficult decisions might need to be taken by Dyche in order to do so.
If we don’t give Roberts a chance to impress now then how long will he need to wait?

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
I think most managers in an 11 game run of no wins would try Roberts at RB. Unfortunately SD is so loyal this is never going to happen unless Lowton has been injured. In fairness, this season, Lowton has been one of our better players-maybe better than Taylor. Lowton just needs to improve that final delivery into their penalty area, or play one twos to get to the byline and pull it back low. At times very predictable just like Westwoods first time clips into the channels

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
It was crying out for Roberts to come on for the last 25 minutes against City to see if he could whip some crosses in.
Our right wingers are all left footed, which makes us so unbalanced. They need an over lapping FB to help rather than just cut back on their left all the time.

I’d imagine Roberts will get some game time wide right at some point but can’t see him starting rb for a while.

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
Dyche might be loyal to players, but he has shown before that if things aren't going right, he will make changes. We've seen it before. The Boxing Day massacre of 2015 is a prime example. We'd only won 1 in 8. And he dropped Michael Duff. Just before this Lowton himself was the fortunate recipient as Darikwa was dropped (I'm still amazed at just how good our back 5 was in the 2nd half of that Championship season: Heaton, Lowton, Mee, Keane, Ward). And of course there is the infamous return of Heaton against West Ham in 2018. He has also, along the way, dropped Chris Wood for long stretches.
We haven't been playing badly, but if results don't give, Dyche will surely tinker. Nobody is safe. Even the Pope...

Hard to say really, not having seen him in a claret shirt.
Would be a tad harsh on Lowton to be honest atm.

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
Lowts had a dodgy spell a year or so ago and, just came back stronger.
He's had yet another decent game against one of the most attacking sides in the league, that regularly blow away sides that are apparently far bigger & better than us.
Why would anyone ask if he should be dropped?

He might get a game wide right under certain circumstances but at right back, Lowton us a far more capable defender and Dyche isn’t going to replace him

Is SD 'Loyal' or does he actually select who he considers most suitable for the framework of the team and bases it on what goes on at Gawthorpe?

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
Why would we drop our best/most consistent performer this year?
Best answer is to start by bringing him off the bench to RW for 30 minutes and resting one of Cornet/McNeil.

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
Lowts had a stinking time for 60-70 mins against Norwich, reminiscent of last year, where everything he did went wrong. Aside that, I think he's been pretty steady this season. The only longstanding complaint is the quality of his crosses but the whole squad seem to be suffering from that at the minute, so its unfair to single him out.
As for Roberts, standard stuff of waiting for a injury / suspension to Lowton before he will get his chance. Them's the breaks at BFC.

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
Lowton has 1 assist (Leeds) and last season had 1 goal 1 assist. This season he has 1 clean sheet (Norwich).
I don’t see anything in his history that the goals and assists will suddenly change. Not sure “deserve” comes into it - we simply have to play the best players to win a match. That is likely to be Roberts against the weaker sides because we have to make sure we score.

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
Dyche’s comments recently on Roberts’ fitness / involvement with Wales suggest there’s close to 0% chance of him starting yet.

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
We’ve not won all season.
Lowton has been nothing more than ok and was terrible against Norwich.
If Roberts is fit, I’d pick him just to freshen it up and to see if he’s better than the average Joe that is Matt Lowton.

You’d think Lowton was some star player the way people go on about him. He’s been no better or worse than the rest of our bottom 3 misfiring pretty poor outfit, though pretty personifies the word “ average “Roberts will surely have to wait until the Spurs game.

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
Experience tells us we won’t have to wait long for Lowts to drop his form.
He’s currently playing as well as he ever has in a Burnley shirt, but I’m sure we all know about Robert’s, and surely some have seen how effective he is going forward, and we all want to see us having a proper go don’t we?
Rare is the SD signing who gets straight in.

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
We need to find a winning formula soon, and also start scoring a goal or two, Lowts hasn't done much wrong this season, but Roberts could well offer us a greater attacking threat, hence Roberts gets the nod for me, especially in our next 2 games which are winnable if we can rediscover our best form again.

I can't believe anyone is questioning Lowton's place in the team,he's certainly not done anything to warrant being dropped,or is the OP just dropping him for the sake of it?

It comes from the same group who believe virtually anyone who has not worn a Burnley shirt must be by definition be better than anyone who has.

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
No one would have expected McNeil to be displaced (by Cornet) from his left midfield position but it’s happened and we are a better team.
We are getting close to a very serious situation where ‘reasonably good displays’ are resulting in draws/defeats and Dyche must be open minded to making player changes at any position (only exceptions being Pope and Tarks).
Roberts just completed over 80 minutes at international level and his offensive skills are imo better than Lowton, that is why Dyche should be seriously considering a change of right back on Saturday.

If we’re chasing the game then it might make sense to use Roberts as a sub. If we’re defending, it has to be Lowton

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
I think there’s a misconception on the type of player Roberts is, he’s not a Trippier type right back that plays in beautiful crosses. He’s a grafter that gets up and down the line and try’s to create an overlap on the opposition full back. He’s a good player but will need time to bed in (wait for Lowton to hit a poor bit of form)PaintYorkClaretnBlue wrote: ↑Thu Oct 28, 2021 6:02 pmAgreed, I was a bit disappointed with roberts, I suppose I was expecting another trips in relation to crossing but he seemed to pass more often than not.

The problem is he is used to Ramsay for Wales and other possession based midfielders at Swansea to play off.
Our midfielders aren't always wanting the ball in them areas.

Dyche has only bought Roberts for his long throw. He certainly didn't buy him for his crossing ability.
Expect another old donkey striker up front in January to get on the end of his throw ins.

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
Stupid post. Roberts created the second most chances in the Championship last season from right back, behind Buendia. Last night was his first 90 minutes since June at the Euros and he did okay, clearly a lot more to come from him.Nonayforever wrote: ↑Thu Oct 28, 2021 6:11 pmDyche has only bought Roberts for his long throw. Re: Lowton or Roberts?
I like Roberts but I don’t think he’ll suit our style of play. He did put in some great one vs one defending last night which was great to see, but he was very reluctant to cross the ball and was looking for short passes to slide someone in. That’s not our game out wide. We rely on the full backs to deliver from deep positions.
I think he’d be great in an Eddie Howe Bournemouth side, a team who play to feet and fizz in low crosses from the byline, but I think Dyche will want to do a bit coaching before he starts him in the PL. Could be wrong but they’re my thoughts.

Re: Lowton or Roberts?
I'd love to see Roberts start, but Lowts is one of a handful of players who've played consistent this season. It would be harsh on him. We need something new and Connor is one of the options.
Re: Lowton or Roberts?
I must have seen a different match last night. I thought Robertson played well and instead if launching it or passing it back, he tried to bring the CM in to play in pushing them forward with intricate passing and a hell of a lot faster than Lowton, and thats before we talk about that long throw. But all about opinions
