How do people view/ find out about local news ?
The Lancashire Telegraph and Burnley Express websites are both awful and slow to use and now you can only read so many articles without registering and paying a fee.
Lancs live is a newish website that until a few years ago I’d never heard off, still though it’s awful and slow to use.
Obviously physical newspapers are on the verge of being gone with it all being online and the papers being old news by the time they are printed.
I come of all social media around 3 years ago(best thing I’ve ever done). I know all the ones Iv mentioned use social media platforms.
In general the news outlets for Burnley/Lancashire are very poor and have been for a quite a while.
Is there anything I have missed ? Any good apps maybe ?

Haven’t bought a newspaper for years! Used to buy one abroad about 8 years ago but haven’t bought a UK once since my apprenticeship days to read whilst ‘working’
Absolutely no point in me buying one now, it’s all in your phone or tablet. As you say Burnley Express and the telegraph are both dead papers now

You've just about summed it up PTN. I live on the Fylde now but get my local news from home (Accy) by navigating the awful Lancslive and Telegraph, although I'm only allowed about 5 articles on Telegraph before it wants me to subscribe. Unfortunately, decent local journalism is a thing of the past in East Lancashire.

I thought Padiham still had a Town Crier for all its local news. Must have moved on in the last 20 years since I was last there

I’ve yet to see an article in the clitheroe advertiser (paper or online) that contained news that I needed/wanted to know about.

The Telegraph football click bait stuff is great. ‘Burnley linked with £100 million player move’ after reading all the articles about every other team in the league, and having to load, re load the pages hundreds of times, you finally get to an article where it says a Burnley removals firm helped Ronaldo with his house move or some such tenuous connection.

It's in a catch 22 situation at the minute.
On the one hand most people want all their news for free and won't subscribe or buy a paper.
On the other they have turned their businesses into clickbait machines to earn a wage.

People won’t buy a newspaper because people find local news through local chat groups, as sales fell papers went to feeds, instead of investigative journalism, to save costs… but without journalists considered and in depth analysis is impossible… as are in depth local features; which creates even less reason to ‘buy’. Newspapers now rely on the same sources that are free to search and moved into the space formally occupied by FREE papers like ‘Citizen’ that use scattergun advertising from casual viewings. The successful magazines have maintained their independent researches and researched features.Quickenthetempo wrote: ↑Thu Oct 21, 2021 11:26 amIt's in a catch 22 situation at the minute.

Re: How do people view/ find out about local news ?
Their demise isn't good for local democracy. At one time local newspapers would send reporters to every council committee meeting and this helped to hold local councils to account.
I can't be arsed with trawling through screeds of incomprehensible Facebook and Twitter gossip to find out what's going on at a local level. I have social media accounts for our business and that it, nothing personal on them at all. No photos of our little smashers attending their first day at school. No pics of our ickle doggy-woggy enjoying a walk in the local park, and no posts about what we had for tea last night.

I've never been interested in local news be it by newspaper, TV or social media. However. If something relevant happens it doesn't take long to filter through the grapevine and the wife is incessantly rabbiting on about local news.
With all that and a bloke at work who I have nicknamed 'The Forecaster' as he is more accurate than any weather presenter on TV I am well covered.

The “local” papers are no longer local
The Express is that bad, they are now reporting the score predictions of Jeff Stelling and Mark Lawrenson
