Penalty Shoot Out question
May seem like a daft question, but does a team reduced to ten men have one less penalty taker in the shoot out, should it come to it?
I mean if it comes down to the 11th man to take.

Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
Think the other team has to leave one player out to make it even.

Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
I thought in these situations the Manager had to take the extra penalty. Im sure back in the 90's the then Mansfield manager Steve Parkin scored the winning penalty in whatever they called the EFL Trophy back then
Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
I hope not, if it’s Dyche it’s nailed on to go over the bar.Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 12:41 pmI thought in these situations the Manager had to take the extra penalty. That's spot on, the other team makes a choice as to who they leave out.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 12:27 pmThink the other team has to leave one player out to make it even.

Can they chose to leave their goalkeeper out?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 2:51 pmThat's spot on, the other team makes a choice as to who they leave out.

Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
I saw an interview with a goalkeeper recently but can't remember who. He said he always wanted to take one because he felt with all the times he'd kicked a ball upfield suggested he could strike a ball.Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 2:57 pmGoal keepers seem to take class penalties in shoot outs, they deal with the nerves well I think as they’re already in the firing line
A former Burnley striker once told me that strikers are not the best penalty takers because they rarely kick a dead ball in a match,

Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
I'd imagine very few penalties taken like a *goal kick would be saved.
*Traditional goal kicks, obviously. Not this two yard pass fannying about.

Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
I always remember Kevin Pressman lashing one in the top corner against Wolves in a cup match. Absolutely leathered it.

Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
Paul Fletcher perhaps? Don't think I ever saw him take a penalty( though to be fair that can apply to a lot of forwards from years back). It's just that we always used to say that many of Paul Fletcher's goals were instinctive. The quicker the ball came to him the more lethal he seemed to be. Two of his goals from the 70's illustrate this perfectly; a volley at home to Villa early 72-73 and of course the goal at Leeds in 1974.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 3:01 pmI saw an interview with a goalkeeper recently but can't remember who. Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
It wasn't Fletch, but he falls into that category. I think he only took one and that was to complete a hat trick.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 4:29 pmPaul Fletcher perhaps? Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
Good point. I’d agree with that. Do midfielders take most direct free kicks? I think they do.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 3:01 pmI saw an interview with a goalkeeper recently but can't remember who. Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
When was that penalty?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 9:49 pmThey do tend to take the most free kicks but I think Ross Wallace was the last non-striker to take a pen for us.
Matt Taylor took the one against Leicester in April 2015 so couldn’t have been long after that as Ross left that summer

Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
Pickford lashed a great Pen for England.
I'd have been confident for Heaton to take one.
Pope - it's going over the bar.

Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
I’m losing the plot again. Wallace I’m sure was the last non-striker to score a pen for us. Both Arfield & Taylor missed pens in 2014/15.

Re: Penalty Shoot Out question
But why should it be 'evened up'? The whole point of sending a player off is to penalise the player and their team in that match for a serious rule infringement; a penalty shoot-out is part of the match.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 25, 2021 12:27 pmThink the other team has to leave one player out to make it even.
