We usually park at the South Shore Road Car Park, which is down by the Baltic/Sage Centres - immediately south of the pedestrian eye-bridge; it's about £5 to park and a mile (mostly uphill) to the ground, but it saves you fighting traffic onto/across the Tyne Bridge each way and a picturesque walk, across the eye-bridge one way via the Bigg Market and back via the Tyne Bridge. Doesn't help with getting to your seats of course; best thing for that is to go the day before and spend the night acclimatising on the second tier, or if you can't manage that then swallow a couple of Diamox tablets.

I think that closure applies only to the smaller car park right down beside the river/eye bridge, there's a much larger (Baltic Centre) car park set on a higher level immediately to the south of it (prices & restrictions similar) which we've also used when the South Shore's been full; it's only 50-100m further to walk.

NUT's a very different city to the one I knew forty-odd years ago. During our subsequent travels - often to some of the world's less salubrious corners - I've often been asked 'don't you ever get scared?' and I invariably respond with the same answer: "Nah, I used to drink in Newcastle Bigg Market on a Friday night and I've never been anywhere else as frightening as that."

Planning to take the family up to Newcastle for the match next weekend. I’ve never been to Newcastle at Christmas- just wondered if anyone could recommend good things to do/see in Newcastle with the family at this time of year?

On the first Saturday of the month there's a nice little food market sets up on Armstrong Bridge (10am-3pm). Great local produce and street food. From there there's some lovely short walks into and around Jesmond Dene where there's also a small petting zoo.

A walk from the Monument down Grey Street, Dean Street and then along the Quayside takes in some great sights. Don't miss the old buildings to your right just before you go under the Tyne Bridge. Head along the Quayside and cross the Millennium Bridge and visit The Baltic Art Centre and The Sage (both well worth a look in and free). Not my cup of tea but the Xmas markets will be on and along the top of that route too. Loads of food and drink options all the way down and along Newcastle side of the Quayside. The Redhouse and Khai Khai are the standout food stops for me but you'll not go far wrong.

Lane 7 (boutique bowling, pool, ping pong).

If willing to venture a little further Tynemouth has a great market and Riley's Fish Shack on King Edwards Bay serve up some of best sea food in an amazing setting. Look into booking ahead if planning to do this. There great shops/bars/cafes in Tynemouth and the priory is stunning too. Only a 10 minute drive up the coast for Whitley Bay from there and the newly refurbished Spanish City, promenade with arcades etc. South Shields has bowling, arcades, rides too but it's not as scenic.

For a fairly unusual food experience you might try Manaza (Korean). Doesn't look like much but the food is great. They do a dish called Bibimbap (Hot Stone Bowl) for about £9. Rice, various veg and meat or tofu come served cold in a baking hot stone bowl with a raw egg yolk on top and chilli sauce on the side. You smoosh it about as you eat it and warm the dish through. It gets hotter as you eat it (not just because the chilli sauce is moreish) and bits of rice crisp up on the side of the bowl. Never had anything like it and it's wonderful.

Thanks very much for the reply wot_no_pies. I’ve spent the evening researching all those places. I’ll have a chat with my wife about them tomorrow but we’ll definitely be picking some off the list! There’s so much to do I might even see if we can get an extra night at the hotel.

Probably a mistake researching these eateries in the evening whilst hungry ! Riley’s Fish Shack is exactly my kind of place… reminds me a lot of my favourite fish restaurant in the Algarve (Caniço). Also strange you should mention Korean - I drove past one in Ramsbottom recently & thought to myself that I’d never had Korean - probably wouldn't have tried it without a recommendation on what to choose, but will give it a go now. I can’t imagine I’ll be able to tempt my family in to Manaza, unfortunately, but have checked the Ramsbottom place and they sell Bibimbap too. I’ve recently found myself “between jobs” so will be taking myself there for lunch while I’ve got the opportunity - that dish sounds delicious.

The college is controlled parking so you might find a fine when you get back to your car.....there are a couple of car parks down at that end of the town as you come off the A1, go over the Redhue Bridge, turn left at the traffic lights and then left again....there is a multi and another car park. If you turn right after the bridge then o the left you have the Grosvenor Casino...all about a 20 min walk from the stadium.

I've used this one before on Claremont Rd when going up for a night game a few years ago. Think it was the 1-1 draw in Jan 2018. It's paid parking around half a mile from the stadium.

Park At Newcastle College

Around a 10-15 minute walk away from St James Park is Newcastle College, where around 400 car parking spaces are available for home matches and other events at the stadium such as the Magic Weekend of Rugby League. The cost to park there is £4, which is paid on entry and then you will be given a voucher to display on your dashboard. The car park is supervised with security coverage. The entrance to the College car park is off a roundabout on Scotswood Road (A695), see this Newcastle College location map. If approaching Newcastle from the South and following the directions above, then after bearing left onto the A189 and crossing over the River Tyne. Then at the next set of traffic lights turn left onto the A695 signposted Blaydon/Metro Radio Arena and at the next roundabout turn right into the College car park.

There a few multi-storey car parks in and around the City and also plenty of other parking around the Stadium.

For me I would avoid at all costs the NCP and the Gate car parks properly expensive.

I live 8 miles out of Newcastle, it's a bloody nightmare to park on a match day.
I would suggest park and ride the metro from Heworth or Gateshead. Or get there early.
